Good Morning Families,

Take a look at this Survey Project. If your child has a disability and has
an IEP at school, the information you provide can make a difference!

IDEA National Survey Project

Take part in the IDEA National Survey Project and share your special
education experiences!

The IDEA National Survey Project is sponsored by the National Center for
Learning Disabilities, National Down Syndrome Society, Autism Society of
America, Autism National Committee, and The Advocacy Institute. Our purpose
is to study whether the playing field is level for children with
disabilities and their parents, and whether their rights are protected.

Daily Information Update for Fort Campbell, KY

The survey will examine whether parents are treated as equal partners in
their children's education. We ask questions about whether the rights of
students with disabilities and their parents protected throughout the
special education process, including IEP meetings, decisions about special
education, evaluations and eligibility, and Due Process and Impartial
Hearings. We also ask about inclusion and whether children with disabilities
receive the education they need, or whether they are deprived of important
services. We will be using your answers to compile a report about the
experiences of parents and children with disabilities and these issues. See
the survey Privacy Policy
http://www.advocacyinstitute.org/IDEASURVEY/policy.shtml for more
information.
All disabilities are welcome! The survey is not limited to the disabilities
on which the sponsoring organizations
<blockedhttp://www.advocacyinstitute.org/IDEASURVEY/sponsors.shtml> focus.
We are studying these issues as they affect all children with disabilities
and special needs. We also have surveys for all members of the community.

has fewer questions than the longer survey. Most questions are
multiple-choice. The sentences are short, easy to read, and understand.
There is less detail. This short survey may be easier for some

Stay Strong with the Women’s Self Defense Course

One in six women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Every two
minutes someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. These staggering
statistics make it vital to know how to defend yourself in all circumstances.
The Army Community Service (ACS) Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is
helping women to be prepared by offering the Women’s Self-Defense
Course on April 12 through April 13. The course will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30
p.m., with the location disclosed at the time of registration.
The classes will be conducted by Clarksville Police Department’s certified
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) instructors. It is a program of realistic self-
defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a
comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention,
risk reduction and avoidance while progressing on to the basics of hands-on
defense training. Registration is required for this event and space is limited.
This is a chance for all women to take charge of their safety and arm
themselves with skill and knowledge. Stand up against sexual assault; make a
difference!

women who want to live a healthy, outdoor lifestyle.
In April we will be focusing on water sports, with a joined weekend trip for
both Working Women and Women in the Wilderness, to Land Between the
Lakes. The Challenge Course Complex is the location for May’s exciting
adventures, and during the month of June we will be focusing on the exciting
sport of Mountain Biking. There are two different times available on Tuesday’s

place on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., or April 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. These clinics will teach you the fundamentals of kayaking and
canoeing: safety, boat orientation, paddling and steering techniques. Come
have fun on the water and learn something new. Meet at the Outdoor
Recreation Office for transportation to the lake. The cost of the clinic is $9 per
person.
Put your newly acquired paddling skills to the test on April 16 and 17 with an
overnight adventure to Land Between the Lakes. The overnight trip is a great
way to demonstrate your newly acquired kayak or canoe skills, learn new
skills, socialize, and have fun while enjoying the beauty of nature! Trip
includes all water gear, food, instruction, and transportation. Tents and
sleeping bags not provided. Meet at the Outdoor Recreation Office at 10
a.m. on April 16. There will be a mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting April 14th 5 p.m.

unique challenges for all. Cost is $7 per person.
Next, the Carolina T-Wall sits just shy of 50 feet and has 8 different faces
simulating a realistic style of rock climbing. Learn the basics of climbing with
Climbing 101 on May 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and May 12 from 10 a.m.
to 12 p.m. This clinic will cover the basics of rock climbing such as belay
technique, equipment use, proper climbing technique, and will prepare you
with the basic knowledge to venture into the high adrenaline based sport of
rock climbing. The fee for the Climbing 101 clinic is $15 per person.

to work as a team to ascend the many cargo nets, zip lines, sliding platforms,
and cables suspended in mid air. The Odyssey Experience is $25 per person
and takes place on May 24 at 5:30 p.m., and May 26 at 10 a.m.
June focuses on the exciting sport of Mountain Biking! We will start the month
off with an introduction to Mountain Biking on trails located at Outdoor
Recreation. Mountain biking can get pretty dirty and your bike can endure
some heavy usage. We will teach you the skills you need to learn to be able
to maintain a bike and fix minor issues that may arise along the trail. Learn
how to care for and maintain you mountain bike during the Bike
Maintenance Class on June 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cost for class is $7

Finally, we will close out our spring series with a day trip to Chickasaw Trace
on June 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chickasaw Trace is a small 300 acre park,
bordering the Duck River about 45 min south west of Nashville. Though this
park is small, it offers some of the best Mountain Biking in Middle Tennessee.
We will be easing ourselves from beginner trails to more intermediate trails
while peddling 5-7 miles. This day trip is a great way to demonstrate your
heightened skills, enhance current skills, socialize, and have fun while
enjoying the beauty of nature. Please bring snacks, water, and closed toe
shoes. Cost is $15 per person and includes mountain bikes, helmets, and
transportation. Participants need to bring a sack lunch (or money to stop on
the way home) and plenty of water for the day.

Readiness Groups (FRGs). Trip registration can be done in person or over the
phone, Monday through Friday. Locations and times of trips are subject to
change due to weather conditions. Please dress appropriately for each
event. Cancellations initiated by the participant 48 hours in advance of the
trip are entitled to a full refund. However, refunds for cancellations made

Mean What You Say and Say What You Mean with ACS Couples
Communication Seminars
It is no secret that men and women communicate differently. Sometimes
these differences can lead to huge misunderstandings which can cause
friction in a relationship. Whether you have been married for just a little while
or for several years, communication plays a vital role in all aspects of your
relationship. Army Community Service understands the impact that good
and poor communication can have on a relationship, and is inviting couples
to participate in a Couples’ Communication Seminar taking place April 18
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Family Resource Center.
Using curriculum from several different programs and resources with a
primary influence from the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement
Program (PREP) out of the University of Denver, the seminar facilitators like
Marianne Erdman, are able to give couples a different perspective as to
what might really be going on when communication is lacking in a
relationship. The workshops include power point presentations, DVDs, videos
and natural, frank group discussions. Marianne states that workshop goers
are willing to discuss their situations because “whatever goes on in the
workshop stays in the workshop.”
The Couples’ Communication Seminars are open to all couples, other than
those involved in domestic violence, and usually are a good mix of all ranks
and marital lengths. This diversity allows for the couples that are struggling in
their marriage, couples that are getting accustomed to newlywed life, or
couples that want to ensure they are on the same page to learn off each
other by sharing what does and does not work for them. Hitting on why
communication is so important in relationships, Ms. Erdman pointed out,
“that if couples come away from the workshop really understanding that
good communication is the real key to getting your relationship to not only
survive, but to thrive, then the seminar accomplished what it is designed to
do.”
Limited child care is available for those with children. In order to utilize the
child care, the child must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services
(CYSS). Registration is required for the seminars and interested parties should
call (270) 412-5500 or 798-2045 for more information.

Joe Swing Facility Offers New Recreational and Event Location
Many places on military installations are named after important and
prominent people who have influenced history; Joe Swing Recreational
Facility and Park is named after Major General Joseph Swing. Swing was in
command of the 11th Airborne Division, nicknamed “The Angles,” from
February 1943 until January 1948. As a tribute to Maj. Gen. Joseph Swing’s
accomplishments for the 11th Airborne Division, it was only fitting to name
such a beautiful area of Fort Campbell after a great man.
Located just inside gate one behind Richardson Army Lodging, you will find
one of the best kept secrets of Fort Campbell - a true place of peace and
tranquility, Joe Swing Park. The park is shaded by numerous trees and has
stone picnic benches atop a small hill overlooking the rock quarry. Although
the rock quarry still remains on the Fort Campbell off-limits list for swimming,
climbing, and playing in/on, there is now another reason to enjoy the serenity
of the natural landscape.
In the fall of 2009 construction began on a state of the art facility located
inside the Joe Swing Park area. With construction completed in the spring of
2010, this beautiful facility is now available to reserve for your events. The
breathtaking view overlooking the lake makes this perfect place for a
wedding and/or wedding reception, military Hail and Farewell or retirement
party, Family reunion, or any other special function. This large A-Frame
structure will seat two hundred people inside with additional seating
available on the patio that looks out over the picturesque rock quarry.
The Joe Swing Recreational Facility functionality can serve many purposes as
it is outfitted with a state of the art audio and visual support system and
limited kitchen equipment. Tables and chairs are provided and available for
use by those who rent the facility. Patrons have the option of bringing in their
own food and beverages in a pot luck style, or may utilize a catering service.
If a catered meal is desired, coordination with Cole Park Commons Eagle
Catering is required. Cole Park Commons Eagle Catering has a wide variety
of food and beverage options for you to choose from and is the only
approved caterer permitted in Joe Swing. Whether you are having a sweet
sixteen, wedding, wedding reception, hail and farewell, graduation,
quinceanera, anniversary, bar mitzvah, or any other special occasion, Joe
Swing Recreational Facility can accommodate your needs.
Reservations can be taken up to one hundred and twenty days in advance.
For more information, to schedule a tour, or to reserve for an event, please
contact Cole Park Commons Eagle Catering office at (270) 798-4610
extension 119.

Families Can Get United Through Reading

One of the most difficult parts of a deployment for Families and Soldiers alike
can be longing to see a Family member’s face or hear their voice when they
are miles apart. Families often look for new and creative ways to stay in
touch with their loved ones, and United Through Reading gives them a
resource to help melt away the miles.
United Through Reading is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 that
unites Families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding
experience of reading aloud together. The United Through Reading Military
Program provides a meaningful opportunity for powerful emotional
connections that help relieve that stress of separation by having deploying
service members read aloud to children via DVD. In 2006, the USO joined
forces with United Through Reading. The USO at Fort Campbell can provide
pre-recording opportunities.
The service member reads a book while being recorded on a DVD and sends
the DVD home to the child. The child then watches the DVD and follows
along with the book if it is available. While the child watches and follows
along with the DVD, a parent or guardian captures the child’s reaction in an
email, video, or picture; and sends it back to the deployed service member.
The process is repeated as often as possible throughout the time of
separation.
If you are interested in having the United Through Reading Military Program
available to you throughout the deployment, please contact the USO Fort
Campbell Director, Stacia Holland Sparrows, by email at SHolland@uso.org or
via phone at (571) 236-9118. USO volunteer teams can provide filming
opportunities and USO Program Managers can provide command briefs,
training seminars, a library/DVD starter kit, and ongoing support.

case by case basis, as the size, shape, and activity has to be taken into
consideration. Moving trucks and vehicles are excluded from being price
matched and proof of competitors lower cost must be verified at the time of
reserving rental item from Gear-To-Go.

Got Friends? Friends Can Save You Money at Gear-to-Go

Whoever thought friends could save you money? Starting April 1, at Gear-to-
Go, your friends are worth more than just the friendship you share. Gear-to-
Go is offering you the opportunity to receive an additional 15% off your next
inflatable rental when your friends also rent an inflatable from Gear-to-Go.
You not only get to save your friends money, but then your friends get to save
you even more money in return.
This is how the program works: Bob comes into Gear-to-Go and rents an
inflatable for his upcoming party. At the time he rents his inflatable, Bob will
receive four (4) coupons, each for a 15% discount on an inflatable rental.
Bob then gives those four coupons to his friends; Joe, Mark, Betty, and Sue.
Joe, Mark, Betty, and Sue have six months from Bob’s rental date to redeem
their coupons, and receive 15% off an inflatable rental. For each coupon his
friends redeem, Bob receives 15% off his next inflatable rental. Bob must then
use the coupons within six months from the redeemed date. Coupons
cannot be used together nor is the discount cumulative.
