D50 is used in emergency care to treat hypoglycemia, and in the management of coma of
unknown origin. This medication is used to treat people with severely low blood sugar who have
symptoms such as loss of consciousness. This medication rapidly restores your blood sugar
levels. Dextrose is a natural sugar found in the body and serves as a major energy source.This
medication may also be diluted to prepare nutritional injections for patients who cannot get
enough nutrients from food or who are unable to eat by mouth. It may also be used as part of the
treatments for other conditions. When used as an energy source, dextrose allows the body to
preserve its muscle mass. Indications :Hypoglycemia, Refractory cardiac arrest (controversial)

    

2V Redness, swelling, pain, or irritation at the injection site may occur.


2V 4kin reddening (flushing) may occur for the first 10 minutes following injection of this
drug.
2V If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist
promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit
to you is greater than the risk of side effects.
2V cany people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Tell your doctor
immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fever, trouble
breathing, swelling of ankles/feet.High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can occur following
an injection of dextrose, especially in diabetics.
2V 4ymptoms of high blood sugar include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness,
flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor.
2V If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor immediately.A very serious allergic reaction to
this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
2V 4ymptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe
dizziness, trouble breathing.If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your
doctor or pharmacist.

first.Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and
nonprescription/herbal products you may use.

Pregnancy 4afety: Not established. Extravasation may cause tissue necrosis; use large vein and
aspirate occasionally to ensure route patency.D50 may sometimes precipitate severe neurologic
symptoms (Wernicke¶s encephalopathy) in thiamine deficient patients, for example, alcoholics.
(This can be prevented by administering 100 mg of thiamine IV)

2V This medication is given into a vein by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic
setting, usually at the first sign of extremely low blood sugar.
2V Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.Before using, check
this product visually for particles or discoloration.
2V If either is present, do not use the liquid.Avoid injecting this product under the skin
because it will cause skin irritation.If you are currently receiving a blood transfusion, this
medication should not be injected into the same vein.After this medication is used to
restore your blood sugar level, usually you should then receive a watered-down form of
dextrose solution.
2V This will prevent a natural reaction in your body that would lower your blood sugar
again.Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

dilute 1:1 with saline for a concentration of 25% dextrose in water; administer 0.5 ± 1.0
g/kg/dose (2-4 cc/kg) slow IV, may be repeated once.
