A large European health insurance
company asked Accenture to help
it replace its aging mainframe
with newer, more cost-efficient
technologies. Our Application

specialists oversaw the migration of
all core applications and data to a
new UNIX system—10,000 programs,
2,000 batch jobs and 1,300 tables. The
insurer can now cut IT spend by up
to 30 percent, and its IT organization

Boosting performance of
Highmark’s applications
US health insurer Highmark
was eager to overhaul its
administrative systems to improve
delivery of information-driven
services for consumers. Teaming
up with Accenture, the insurer
mapped out a manageable three-
phase, five-year application
renewal plan. And it is not just a
technology project. Highmark is
delivering value-added business
services through the program.
For instance, Highmark has been
able to boost the speed and
accuracy of claims processing
and has implemented real-time
claims processing in provider
offices through the program.

A leading French bank improved
the performance of its customer
contact centers by working with
our infrastructure specialists. The
centers’ sagging productivity and
capacity constraints had been making
it hard to service customers and was
threatening long-term relations with
them. We designed and built a new call
center system, rolling out a scalable
network solution that not only boosts
productivity and cuts network costs
but allows the bank to use its contact
centers as new sales channels.
Securing an Asia Pacific
distributor’s SAP systems
One of the Asia Pacific region’s
largest consumer-goods
distributors was implementing
SAP as part of its strategy to
achieve high performance.
A key concern: to make the
SAP environment fully secure.
Working closely with the
distributor’s executive team,
Accenture security professionals
helped the company develop
and execute a comprehensive
strategy to secure both its IT
environment and the business
processes it enables. The
company now has complete
confidence that its SAP systems
are as secure as they can be.
Improving cost efficiency
of a pharma leader’s
IT infrastructure
A global pharmaceutical leader
chose to cut US$100 million
from its IT budget so it could
boost revenues while investing
more in R&D. The company asked
Accenture to help it see how
to consolidate IT infrastructure
support with the outsourcing
provider it had selected. Our
infrastructure professionals
collaborated with the pharma’s
IT leaders to craft a strategic
vision for infrastructure support
within an outsourced model. We
also managed the transition of
all infrastructure support services
to the outsourcing provider at
200-plus sites. The pharma is
on track to cut IT costs—and it
can manage its IT environment
consistently worldwide.

A large Brazilian bank knew it had
to modernize its IT organization
if it was to deliver the profitable

Working closely with the bank’s IT
teams, Accenture mapped out a
strategic transformation plan; the
subsequent implementation work
included a new IT organizational
design and governance model. Now
the bank can expand and diversify
its product portfolio with no new IT
spending. Accenture has also helped
identify the causes of once-frequent
interruptions in the bank’s operations.
Transforming Finanz IT’s
own IT capabilities
Many of Europe’s top financial-
services firms outsource IT
services to Finanz IT. But the
company was under pressure to
provide its fiercely competitive
customers with higher levels
of services. Accenture’s ITST
experts advised a restructuring
of the firm’s IT operations.
Working hand-in-glove with
the firm’s IT staff, Accenture
made sure the transformation
project aligned constantly
with Finanz IT’s strategy. The
firm now has a very efficient
operational infrastructure, with
costs 20 percent lower than
before. And its business processes
are now ITIL-compliant.
