TECHNICAL RULES FOR BIOLOGICAL AGENTS 250
The German Technical Rules for Biological Agents 250 (Technische Regeln für Biologische Arbeitsstoffe,
TRBA 250) reflects the state of the art in terms of requirements when working with biological agents in
the areas of technological safety, occupational medicine, infection control and safety, industrial
engineering and ergonomics. The rules are specified by the Committee for Biological Agents (Ausschuss
für Biologische Arbeitsstoffe, ABAS).
Since July 2006, TRBA 250 has included mandatory rules on the use of safe instruments in medical
interventions where body fluids can be transmitted in quantities relevant to potential infection risks.
These interventions include, but are not limited to, blood withdrawals and punctures to obtain samples of
other body fluids. A transition period to allow for the deployment of safe instrument ended in August 2007.
In February 2008, the TRBA 250 rules for employers were further tightened to afford even better protection
from puncture injury. The use of so-called safety products is now mandatory in all activities where blood
can be transferred in infection-relevant quantities. Conventional instruments may only continue to be
used if a risk assessment is made with the participation of the company physician and an expert on
occupational safety to the effect that the risk of infection is negligible. The result of this assessment must
be properly documented.
Employers disregarding the requirements of TRBA 250 are subject to sanctions under the penal code and
civil liability law as well as occupational health and safety law. TRBA 250 defines the rules that inform
the actions of the German employers’ liability insurance associations (Berufsgenossenschaften). As TRBA
250 is an integral part of the autonomous law governing accident insurance companies, employers may
be held liable if they are found to have violated provisions of TRBA 250.
TECHNICAL RULES FOR BIOLOGICAL AGENTS 250
• The safety mechanism is a part of the system and is compatible with other
accessories.
• Its activation must be possible with one hand.
• Its activation must be possible immediately after use.
• The safety mechanism excludes the possibility of reuse.
• The safety product does not require any changes in application technique.
• The safety mechanism must be identified by a clear signal (tactile and audible).
All safety products listed in the embemed catalogue meet the requirements of TRBA 250
and thereby minimize the risk of infection transmission by puncture injuries. Using safety
products relieves employers of the necessity to make risk assessments and to document
their results.
BONE MARROW BIOPSY NEEDLE
T-Lok
The T-Lok bone marrow biopsy needle is comfortable to use for the operator and particularly easy on the patient
due to its ergonomic twist-lock handle, the double-diamond stylet point, the hollow point at the narrow end of
the cannula and the forceps-like extraction cannula. This allows the cannula to easily penetrate the hard tissue
of the bone and results in less pain for the patient. When the extraction cannula is withdrawn, the bone marrow
is held by the forceps tip, which results in more reliable biopsy procedures while offering nearly identical sample
structures.
EZ Huber
The EZ Huber safety port cannulas afford protection against puncture injuries – and potential subsequent infection –
when removing needles following intravascular administration of drugs and liquids or following blood sample
withdrawal from implanted ports. An audible and palpable click at the time of removing the Huber needle confirms
activation of the protective safety clip that prevents the needle from springing back. During application, the port
cannula is permanently covered by a protective plastic sleeve, protecting the operator from any contact with body
fluids. The materials used for the EZ Huber are free of DEHP and latex and allow the administration of contrast
medium for computed tomographies at pressures of up to 300 psi/21 bar. Safety port cannulas can minimize the
risk of infection transmitted by punctures and have therefore been listed as positive protective measures in the
German Technical Rules for Biological Materials (Technische Regeln für Biologische Arbeitsstoffe, TRBA 250).
The EZ Huber safety port cannula with Y connector offers all the benefits of the regular EZ Huber and additionally
facilitates the injection of drugs through the Y connector without having to interrupt an ongoing infusion.

SAFETY PORT CANNULA
MiniLoc
MiniLoc Huber-point safety port cannulas afford protection against puncture injuries – and potential subsequent
infection – when removing needles following intravascular administration of drugs and liquids or following blood
sample withdrawal from implanted ports. An audible and palpable click at the time of removing the needle
confirms activation of the protective locking mechanism. The handling of the MiniLoc is the same as for
conventional port cannulas. The extension is DEHP-free for safe administration of drugs that exert great strain on
the material, such as Taxol. Safety port cannulas can minimize the risk of infection transmitted by punctures and
have therefore been listed as positive protective measures in the German Technical Rules for Biological Materials
(Technische Regeln für Biologische Arbeitsstoffe, TRBA 250).
The Ambix Intrastick Safe safety port cannula is characterized by its safe, comfortable and uncomplicated patient
connections. An integrated self-adhesive bandage secures the port cannula firmly in its position, making
subsequent cushioning or fastening dispensable. Other benefits of the Ambix Intrastick Safe include non-coring
punctures thanks to its patented spoon-shaped tip cut, excellent patient comfort, strain relief thanks to a flat
handle with integrated bellows and a self-closing safety valve that prevents reflux. The cannula is secured by a
circumferential telescope mechanism. It produces a tactile and audible click as it snaps irreversibly closed on
withdrawal. When used properly, contact with the cannula is completely prevented. The Ambix Intrastick Safe
safety system meets the requirements of TRBA 250.
This safety port cannula has two important advantages: It is small, and it is flat. These properties imply more comfort
for patients requiring long-term infusions. The foam-rubber backing beneath the transparent fixation plate further
enhances patient comfort. The safety port cannula is free of DEHP and latex and is available in various sizes. The
Surecan SafeStep safety system meets the requirements of TRBA 250.
The Jetcan Port cannula is used for puncturing the port catheter system. It features a three-way stopcock that
allows the administration of additional drugs or solutions. The Jetcan port cannula needle tip is highly stable,
offering optimum punch channels. The wings are used for securing the cannula after puncture and can be
cushioned using sterile cotton swabs. The extension is DEHP-free for safe administration of drugs that exert great
strain on the material, such as Taxol.
The Vasofix Safety i.v. cannula features a self-activating system that automatically covers the sharp needle tip
with a safety clip on retraction, safely and persistently. This cannula is particularly user-friendly because it does
not require any modification of the familiar puncturing technique. Additional drugs can be administered through
the injection port without requiring an additional puncture. The Vasofix Safety cannula protects operators from
puncture injuries and the accompanying risk of infection. It is used for infusion therapy, parenteral nutrition,
injections and venous punctures. Safety i.v. cannulas can minimize the risk of infection transmitted by punctures
and have therefore been listed as positive protective measures in the German Technical Rules for Biological
Materials (Technische Regeln für Biologische Arbeitsstoffe, TRBA 250).
The Pro-Mag Ultra and Pro-Mag Ultra ST automatic biopsy instruments are used to obtain high-quality
biopsies such as histological prostate, kidney, liver, lung and breast biopsies. These biopsy instruments
feature a particularly powerful spring that propels the biopsy needle through the tissue at a high feed
rate, allowing very smooth tissue biopsies. Loading the spring automatically activates a safety feature
that prevents inadvertent actuation. The biopsy instruments have two actuators each, one in front and
one in the back, giving the operator a choice of different techniques. The Pro-Mag Ultra propels the
sample notch 25 mm into the tissue, while the Pro-Mag Ultra ST (“short throw”) propels it 14 mm, making
it particularly suitable for breast biopsies. The sample obtained can be spread onto the slide without
having to remove the biopsy needle. The biopsy instruments can be sterilized using standard techniques.
This biopsy needle is used together with a Pro-Mag Ultra biopsy instrument to obtain high-quality
histological biopsy samples. At a length of 19 mm, the sample notch provides sufficient material for
clinical diagnosis. The needle features a patented attachment that secures the needle sleeve in place and
prevents it from changing its position, ensuring a perfect fit of the biopsy needle inside the biopsy
instrument. The attachment for the different needle sizes are colour-coded and therefore easy to
recognize. The centimetre calibration on the biopsy needle itself facilitates its precise placement in the
depth of the tissue. The tip of the needle is echogenic, facilitating visibility in ultra sound biopsy
procedures. Matching coaxial introducer needles are available for the Pro-Mag Ultra biopsy needle.

This biopsy needle is used together with a Pro-Mag Ultra ST biopsy instrument to obtain high-quality
histological biopsy samples. At a length of 9 mm, the sample notch provides sufficient material for clinical
diagnosis. Because the Pro-Mag Ultra ST has a short feed (14 mm), it is particularly well suited for breast
biopsies. The biopsy needles do not penetrate the tissue as deeply and are therefore comparatively short.
The needle features a patented attachment that secures the needle sleeve in place and prevents it from
changing its position, ensuring a perfect fit of the biopsy needle inside the biopsy instrument. The
different needle sizes have colour-coded attachments and are easy to recognize. The centimetre calibration

This automated full-core biopsy instrument uses a special cannula system to obtain high-quality
histological biopsy samples. A unique “cut and capture” mechanism delivers cylindrical full-core biopsies
for clinical diagnostics, containing up to 59% more tissue volume than conventional biopsy instruments.
Three different cannula stroke lengths of the cannula system facilitate different sample lengths – 9, 19
and 29 mm. The BioPince full-core biopsy instrument is available with 18 and 16 G cannulas. The
centimetre calibration on the cannula itself facilitates its precise placement in the depth of the tissue. Its
low weight and easy handling make BioPince particularly well suited for CT-controlled biopsies.
Thanks to its low weight and easy one-handed handling, this automated single-use biopsy instrument is
particularly suited for obtaining high-quality biopsy samples of any type, especially CT-guided biopsies.
The Tru-Core II biopsy instrument propels the sample notch of the biopsy needle 22 mm into the tissue.
At a length of 19 mm, the sample notch provides sufficient material for clinical diagnosis. The tip of the
needle is echogenic, facilitating visibility in ultrasound biopsy procedures. The centimetre calibration on
the biopsy needle itself facilitates its precise placement in the depth of the tissue. The different needle
sizes are colour-coded: the colours can be viewed in the window at the bottom of the biopsy instrument.
Matching coaxial introducer needles are available for the Tru-Core II biopsy instrument.

histological biopsy samples. At a length of 19 mm, the sample notch provides sufficient material for
clinical diagnosis. The needle features a patented attachment that secures the needle sleeve in place and
prevents it from changing its position, ensuring a perfect fit of the biopsy needle inside the biopsy
instrument. The different needle sizes have colour-coded attachments and are easy to recognize. The
centimetre calibration on the biopsy needle itself facilitates its precise placement in the depth of the
tissue. The tip of the needle is echogenic, facilitating visibility in ultrasound biopsy procedures. Matching
coaxial introducer needles are available for the Ultra-Core biopsy instrument.

The semi-automated single-use biopsy instrument is compact, lightweight and easy to use. It provides
high-quality tissue samples from body organ and soft tissue biopsies of all types. Its low weight makes it
ideal for CT-controlled biopsies. The sample notch is adjustable with two different settings. Loading the
spring of the cutting cannula once yields a soft-tissue sample of 9.5 mm, and the second loading yields
one of 19 mm. The sample notch can be placed within the lesion without risk. The spring of the cutting
cannula can be actuated with one hand, which greatly simplifies ultrasound-guided biopsies for operators.
The tip of the needle is echogenic, facilitating visibility in ultrasound biopsy procedures. The centimetre
calibration on the biopsy needle itself facilitates its precise placement in the depth of the tissue. Matching
coaxial introducer needles are available for the Super-Core biopsy instrument.
BIOPSY INSTRUMENT
Super-Core
This biopsy needle is used together with a Pro-Mag Ultra 2.2 biopsy instrument only to obtain high-
quality histological biopsy samples. At a length of 17 mm, the sample notch provides sufficient material
for clinical diagnosis. A removable spacer inside the attachment facilitates precise insertion of the needle
into the biopsy instrument. The attachment for the different needle sizes are colour-coded and therefore
easy to recognize. The centimetre calibration on the biopsy needle itself facilitates its precise placement
in the depth of the tissue. The tip of the needle is echogenic, facilitating visibility in ultrasound biopsy
procedures. Matching coaxial introducer needles are available for the ACN biopsy needle.

The special feature of this transurethral balloon catheter is its high balloon capacity: From CH 14, this catheter
can be inflated with up to 30 ml. This makes for maximum patient comfort, as it allows the catheter to be firmly
secured in the bladder.
In addition, a radiopaque strip facilitates visualization of the catheter during radiological examinations. The ma-
terial properties of the transparent silicone catheter ensure high tissue compatibility and low incrustation risk,
making the catheter suitable for long-term drainage.
The special feature of this suprapubic catheter is its integrated balloon: With its smooth surface, the catheter
reduces painful injury to the tissues as it is inserted or removed. The silicone balloon catheter offers excellent
patient comfort as its balloon allows it to be firmly secured in the bladder.
In addition, a radiopaque strip facilitates visualization of the catheter during radiological examinations. The
material properties of the transparent silicone balloon catheter ensure high tissue compatibility and low
incrustation risk, making the catheter suitable for long-term drainage.
The UB 2000 closed urinary drainage system is mainly characterized by the following: Pressure is
continuously compensated through a ventilation filter. Ascending infections are prevented against by an
anti-reflux valve inside the drip chamber. The unit can be secured safely and properly to different types
of bed frames using the twin holders and additional fixing cord. The flexible hose has a special inner
profile to lend it additional stability and prevent it from being squeezed shut. The stepped connector
ensures a reliable catheter connection, facilitating needle-free urine sampling.
The UB 750/UB 600 urinary leg bag is characterized by excellent wear comfort. The back of the leg bag is coated
with a fleece that can help prevent irritation of the skin. An anti-reflux valve prevents urine from flowing back-
ward into the system, reducing the risk of ascending infection. The stepped connector ensures a reliable catheter
connection, facilitating needle-free urine sampling. The 50 cm tube includes an additional stepped connector
allowing users to shorten the tube to wear the leg bag in different positions on the upper or lower leg, depending
on personal preference. Here the leg bag is held in place by a Velcro strap, which can be shortened as required
and is reusable (it can be washed at up to 60°C). Note that the Velcro strap is not included with the leg bag, but
must be ordered separately.
The CareVent DUO catheter valve offers user of permanent urinary catheters a high measure of flexibility by per-
mitting urine to be removed from the bladder in a controlled manner, either into a urinary bag or into the toilet.
Permanent discharge, e.g. during the night, is also possible by simply attaching the connecting hose to a urinary
bag and safely changing the valve mode. Special benefits of the CareVent DUO valve include its low weight (ap-
prox. 6 g) and its ease of operation – using only one hand – that is supported by colour-coded controls. The
special valve design prevents urine leakage and reduces the risk of infection. The CareVent DUO fits all urinary
catheters.
