SEPARATION TECHNOLOGIES
The Bird- Young Rotary Filter ...
Modern FiltrationTechnology

This filter is a continously operating drum filter of special design. The non-cellular design differs from
conventional drum filters and offers the features necessary for providing optimal filtration performance:

· very high filtration capacity · removal of very thin filter cakes

· excellent cake washing · small, economical enclosures for pressure and vacuum filtration

The above features make Bird Young Rotary Filter particularly suitable for separation processes that require
large filtrate flow rates. Compared with all other rotary filters it enables a very accurate segregation of the
wash liquor from the primary filtrate, using an internal wash pan as shown in above picture.
The Bird-Young Rotary Filter
Sound Design Principles Make It All Possible

• Up to 93% of the filter area is constantly under vacuum.

• High drum speeds up to 30 rpm takes advantage of quick initial cake formation (see the curve below) allowing thin
cakes which filter faster (higher capacity), wash more effectively (higher purities) and dry more efficiently (drier cakes)

Time

• Unrestricted gas and filtrate removal result in maximum flows and pressure differential across the cake.

These basic design principles assure the user optimum production results, maximum wash efficiency, and drier cakes
while keeping operating costs down to a minimum.

Bird-Young Rotary Pressure Filter (RPF)

The unique single cell design of the Bird-Young RPF enables it to be enclosed for
high pressure applications, in which a differential pressure rather than vacuum is
used as the driving force for filtration.

The Bird-Young RPF also has the excellent wash capability of the atmospheric
Bird-Young filter. Andritz Bird Inc. has decades of experience with pressurized
applications. In these applications the pressurized Bird-Young RPF has proven
to be reliable and unequalled in its fast-filtering and washing performance.

There are several important advantages of using pressure vs. vacuum:

1. Slurries can be pumped directly from a pressurized reactor to the filter under
high pressure, eliminating the need for an atmospheric stage.
2. The pressure filter is ideal for applications where the vapor pressure is high, and scaling occurs under vacuum.
3. Higher differential pressures can be achieved and maintained than on a vacuum filter, translating into even faster
filtration rates. Whereas on a vacuum filter the differential pressure is limited by the vacuum pump, on the
Bird-Young RPF the differential pressure is only limited by the yield strength of the filter bridges supporting
the cloth, enabling differential pressures much higher than those achieved by a vacuum pump.
