Office Memorandum
The Central Statistics Office in the M/O Statistics and P.I. announces the
scheme of summer internship for post-graduate/research students of recognized
universities/institutes during 2011-12. A total number of 130 interns are proposed to
be covered during the year i.e. 2011-12. The broad fields/disciplines for interns
include National Accounts, Economic Statistics (Including Index Numbers),
Social Statistics, Field Surveys, Price Statistics, Official Statistical System and
Software Development. The aim and scope, eligibility, duration, expected output
from interns; remuneration and procedure for selection are contained in the enclosed
scheme for internship.

Scheme for Internship for Post‐graduate/Research Students
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) in the National Statistical Organization wing of the
Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MOSPI) introduces a scheme of
Internship for Post‐graduate/Research Students of recognized Universities/Institutions for
implementation from 2011‐12 onwards with the following details:

*(Covering the field operation of Large Scale Sample Survey topics inter‐alia
including Agricultural Statistics , Industrial Statistics , Socio‐Economic Surveys ,
Price Statistics (MCPC and RPC) and Urban Frame Survey, Statistical activities
relating to state/ Distt. Or any other statistician topics/ statistical Product). The
list of Zonal offices and its regional Offices are enclosed in annexure –I.
Note: The applicants are advised to Choose either from Group “A” or Group
“B”, failing which or opting for both the groups, the application will summarily
rejected. If the applicants choose Group” B”, he/she has to restrict his/her
choice to one Zone only.
3. Objectives:
(a) To familiarize the interested and willing post‐graduate/research students
with the Official Statistical System of the Country, with specific reference to
data collection, processing & analysis, publication and dissemination needs.
(b) To create awareness amongst the students of Statistics/Mathematical
Statistics/ Operational Research/ Economics/ Demography or any of the
applied field of Statistics about the Indian Statistical Service and Subordinate
Statistical Service.
(c) To sensitize the students of Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/ Operational
Research/ Economics/ Demography or any of the applied field of Statistics
about choosing their carrier in the field of Statistics.
4. Number and Place of Internship
The total number of interns in a particular year shall not ordinarily exceed
130 except with the approval of competent authority under deserving
circumstances.
The applicants choosing for a group “A” topics, it is informed that all the
offices of group “A” are located in New Delhi. The applicants choosing for a group
“B” topic are informed that the Zonal and field offices of NSSO (FOD) are located all
over India and SDRD & DPD are located in Kolkata. In case the applicants choose the
field operations of Group “B” , they are advised to give the preference for five

places within the selected Zonal Office (in order of preference), which may be
suitable for them, failing which CSO or Respective Zonal Officers will allot the same
as per the order of merit and availability of slot. No request for change of place will
be entertained under any circumstances.
Note: For Group – B, The candidate has to restrict his/ her choice to only one zone.
5. Eligibility:
The incumbent should be a citizen of India and pursuing his/her post‐
graduation/research from a recognized College/University/Research institute in
Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Operational Research/ Economics/ Demography
or any of the applied field of Statistics.
6. Duration and Expected output from intern:
Each interns/student will undergo two month’s duration of internship and shall
be required to present brief report/paper at the end of the assignment including
inter‐alia, his/her observations and suggestions, if any, while conceiving any tangible
improvement in the system.
Note: The award of internship to the incumbent is not to be construed as
any kind of job or assurances for any job in the Government of India.
7. Remuneration:
A token scholarship of Rs. 10,000/‐(consolidated)@Rs.5000/‐ per month would
be paid to the selected intern on successful completion of his/her internship at the
end of internship period. A certificate will also be issued to the successful interns on
completion of the internship. The students opting for NSSO (FOD) Regional offices
will be paid additional amount of Rs.250/‐per day, so as to enable him/her to make
field visits if required, which should not exceed a maximum of 10 working days in the
entire period of 2 months of internship. The decision of field visit if required is to be
taken by the respective Regional Heads of regional offices and should preferably be
in the nearby area.
The selected Candidates have to report/Join to the concerned Offices, where
the internship has been offered to them. No Travelling Allowance or Dearness
allowance will be paid by the Ministry for joining the place of internship allotted to
them or after the completion of internship. The selected candidates have to make
their own arrangement of lodging, boarding and transportation.
8. Facilities:
The intern would be attached with various offices of NSO, MOSPI, keeping in
view the areas of interest expressed by the applicant and allotment of internship on
merit.
To facilitate the intern in the pursuit of his/her assignment, each intern would be
provided with a minimum logistics support i.e. office space with intercom facility and
computer with internet facility etc.

For study material, the intern will have access to literature available in the
Library/Office and can interact with the concerned Division(s)/Officer through guide
with whom he/she would be attached to.
9. Procedure for selection:
i) The applicant would be required to submit one and only one neatly typed
application form clearly indicating, name, date of birth, address, qualification and
the university/institute at present pursuing his/her PG/Research work and the
areas of interest for availing the internship as per the attached Application Form.
If the incumbent wishes to incorporate some more details, he/she may do so on a
extra sheet
The Filled in application form should be submitted either by post/ e‐mail or by hand so as
to reach the respective in charges both at CSO and Zonal offices as per the address/ e‐mail
address given in table ‐1 under Para –V latest by 31st March, 2011. No application in any
circumstances will be accepted after the closing date and time. CSO or NSSO will not be
responsible for non‐receipt of application by post well in time.
ii) The incumbent will be required to produce a permission letter from his/ her
supervisor or Head of Department and a letter of reference / certificate from
faculty member in case his/her classes are still continuing.
iii) All the applications received would be scrutinized as per the procedure to be
decided by Training Division, CSO. The selection of interns would be done by
Training Division, CSO for group “A” and by respective zonal heads for group “B”.
The selected list will be prepared both at CSO level and Zonal Level separately.
iv) The selected candidates/applicants would be informed accordingly individually
besides displaying the list of selected interns on the web‐site of the MOSPI.
v) The internship will be for a period of 2 months from the date of joining. The
details of commencement of the internship may be seen from table 1 below:

vi) Selection of the candidates will be purely on the basis of the marks obtained in
graduation, taking into account the above criterion and the place of option
exercised by the candidates.
vii) The applications of the eligible group “A” candidates will be processed in the
Training Division of CSO. The name of the selected candidates will be displayed at
the website of the Ministry by Training Division after obtaining approval of the
competent authority. Training Division in turn will send the intimation to the
selected candidates to report their place of Joining with a copy to the respective
Divisions immediately.
viii) The applications of the eligible group “B” candidates will be processed by the
respective Zonal Heads. The name of the selected candidates will be
communicated by the respective zonal officers to the concern applicants with a
copy to DDG (Trg.) and to computer center for uploading the same on website.
Note: No enquiries will be entertained by this office
regarding receipt of applications/selection of candidates
etc.
