2057: The Body, The City and The World

(Reaction Paper)

The future innovations on technology are something that could be

regarded as the products of man’s creative mind. Certainly, what a man can
think of, for sure, could be made possible as it has been portrayed in this film
series.
These film series entitled “2057: The Body”, “2057: The City” and “2057:
The World” in their respective order deals with the prediction of the future by
describing what it would be like living in this world in the year 2057 or 50 years
later after the production of this film series in 2007. This three part film series
was created to show us the world of tomorrow that is based on science facts
and not on science fiction. In fact, its story lines were especially created by
blending the drama and science to feature the predictions and dramas of our
lives in the future society but at the same time, showing the accuracy and
relevance of a documentary as it has been supported by the world's leading
scientist and research institutes. And with a unique blend of drama and
science, this film series gives us an overview of the possible things that we
could see and experience for the next 50 years.
So, what would you see and experience if the clocks rolled forward 50
years? The film series begin with the first part entitled “The Body” which is
about predictions on the advancement of technology use in medicine and deals
with our bodies as its main subject. Some of the medical advances that it
predicts are intelligent clothings, flying ambulances, custom-built human
organs from scratch and robotic surgeries. One of the most remarkable
features of using technological advances it shows is that the identity of a
certain individual could be easily recognized and the information about that
person could be easily accessed. That issue is quite disturbing in a sense that
interchanging the identity of two individuals might took place as in the case
portrayed in the film when the surgeon tricked the system in order to perform
the heart surgery or an expensive operation for a certain patient by using the
insurance of a deceased patient. In that case, although the surgeon's motive is
to save the life of the other patient, using another person's possession or
identity is still a violation. On the other hand, dissemination of information
about an individual is not that bad after all for it is advantageous for certain
agencies who really need the person's records like the police headquarters and
hospitals provided that they're going to keep his / her records private.
Above all of these, this episode clearly shows that even the medical
advances and breakthroughs in the field of medicine doesn't mean a thing that
it has something to do with making man's life span longer or keeping us alive
forever. Even technology can't assure us that it can keep us from growing old or
keeping us young forever. Only when we are still alive that technology could do
something for us.
As with the technology, we couldn't denied the fact that with our daily
dealings in our life, it plays a vital role and that is trying to quench our intense
desire to be satisfied. These satisfaction which entails convenience and
entertainment is what the improvement on technology is all about. Imagine
those cars without drivers or flying cars or humanoid robots in every
household, almost all of us want to have it, isn't it? Living your life while
enjoying the benefits of those products of technology would definitely bring
you satisfaction.
In the future, as the next episode, “The City” predicts, convenience living
will be assured by the networked cities of tomorrow. Not only flying cars nor
humanoids robots roamed around the city but as well as futuristic technological
advances such as holograms. In this networked city, everything is
computerized from cars to buildings and even clothing and all of this were
connected to a single network called Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). Since
all the activities around the city use computers and it are all connected to a
single network, network security has always been the city's biggest concern.
However, the presence of treats like cyber-hackers can crash the entire
network thus, paralyzing the entire city. The story line of this episode was
conceptualized with a “script kiddies” concept. Script kiddies are those people
breaking into computers using programs written by others, with very little
knowledge about the way they work. One of the main character is Paul Gator
played the role of a “script kiddies” as he use his grandfather's program and
his laptop to hack the city's network in an attempt to display his holographic
pet shark on advertisement boards across the city. He succeed in projecting the
shark on every holographic video screen in the city but it overloads the system
and cripples the entire city for it also carries with it an ancient virus that the
future city had no protection against. These instances, like out of curiosity of a
young child that it almost crash the city's network is something that the
security officials of that time wants to control so they use most advance
technology possible like intelligent camera surveillance systems. Well, curiosity
is not a sin anyway, but when it is combined with technology, that is another
issue for it will be too dangerous. Anyway, the story ended well as John Gator,
Paul's grandfather and a computer hacker, saved the entire city.
The last episode of the film series, “The World” is probably the most
complex episode of the three. It tackles the different issues like wars, fastest
way of transmissions of information via laser beams, space elevators, solar
energy as the source of fuel in the future and all highest possible forms of
innovations on technology in respect to its significance for the future world.
This film series is just a prediction of the future of the world with the
enhancement of technology but it couldn’t be denied that this prediction has a
basis on which we could assume that it can be possible. For example, in the
later years, man only think of the existence of computer machines that would
help him do several jobs easier like making computations and file management
but his intense desire to make it happen leads to the creation of mainframes,
that later turn out into PC’s or personal computers, converted into laptops and
so on. This continuous improvement of technology with its growing relevance in
our lives has somewhat proved us that the man would in fact, can make those
things that he think of, happen. That is the power of man’s mind.
What we think of could possibly happen, isn’t it? Right now, I am thinking
of time travelling machines and the invention of a device that could detect the
diseases in an unborn child and could take away these diseases from the
embryo. Will it be possible?
