Questions for Data Converters LTSPICE Simulations

Q1. In Fig.1 Use W/L =1.0u/1.0u use Vb= 0.0V, Vg=1.8V. Z = R = 5Kohms
(i) Let Vi = 0.2+0.2 sin(2π103t). Run transient analysis command for 10msec.
Plot V0 from 0 to 10msec. Right click on plot, select view and see the FFT
(ii) Let Vi = 0.45+0.2 sin(2π103t). Plot V0 from 0 to 10msec. See FFT and note
the increase in harmonics.
(iii) Let Vi = 1.6+0.2 sin(2π103t). Plot V0 from 0 to 10msec. See FFT and note
the increase in harmonics.
(iv) Now set Vb = V0, and repeat all the three questions (i),(ii), (iii) above. This
will only take care of the variation of Vt due to body effect. Would it be
correct to set Vb = Vi.
Q2. In Fig. 2. Use W/L =1.0u/1.0u. Use and Vb= 0.0V, Z = R = 5Kohms. Set
Vbat = 1.8V.
(i) Now repeat (i) to (iii) of Q1.
(ii) Actually you should also see the spectrum of Vi directly and comment on
it.
Q3. In Fig. 2. Use W/L =1.0u/1.0u Use and Vb= 0.0V. Set Vbat = 1.8V. Replace Z
now with a 0.1pf cap.
(i) Perform AC sweep with Vi and plot Vo. Use a nominal DC value of 0.9V and
an amplitude of 0.9V for the AC sweep. You should get a first order LPF
characteristics. Suppose you want to use this as a track and hold circuit for a
14 bit ADC whose input range can vary between 0 and 1.8V. At what frequency
will the above circuit have an error more than 1bit LSB while tracking the input.
(ii) In this same example Verify the formula for switch noise kT/C that was
discussed in the class. How to use Noise Analysis and compute the rms noise is
available in he help topics in LTSPICE. You can also contact me for clarifications
on this.
Q4. Use the ‘SW’ component in LTSPICE and understand how you can use it as an
ideal switch.
Q5. For Fig. 3, use a C value of 0.1pf. Assume W= 100u and L =100u. Now use
proper waveforms for SW1 and SW2 to show (a) problem of charge sharing and (b)
how charge sharing can be overcome by bottom gate sampling. (c) You should
check what is more useful, advancing SW1 or SW2.
Q6. Verify the operation of Nakagome charge pump. Use 0.1pf capacitors. Use
W/L =1u/1u for NMOS and W/L= 2u/1u for all PMOS transitors.
Q8. Construct the comparator shown in Fig.4. Use W/L = 1u/1u for all NMOS and
W/L =2u/1u for all PMOS. Use the SW option LT spice for switches. Use C = 0.1pf
for both the capacitors and VDD =1.8V
(i) Assume Vi+ = 0.9 + 0.1V and Vi- = 0.9 - 0.1V. Show the regeneration of
this waveform by the comparator. Use correct waveforms for the switches.
Measure regeneration time for this case and check to see how it compares
with the formula. (you must estimate gm for this)
(ii) Assume next Vi+ = 0.2 + 0.1V and Vi- = 0.2 - 0.1V. and show
regeneration.
(iii) Assume Vi+ = 0.2 + 0.1V and Vi- = 0.2 - 0.1V and demonstrate
regeneration.
