Spencer is known as a hard working blues man who travels, across the country with his wife Marilyn and their four children. His style is Delta blues on a National Steel guitar or lapsteel, acoustic orelectricand plays anythingtfrom tradition- alblues to gospel, including Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, Earl King, Blind Willie McTell, and Muddy Waters’ tunes. ‘During the show there will be a down home country blues jam, so bring your instruments and be prepared to jam with Spencer Bohren. (Chicago Kerry KCBS Blues Fest... The Best of the Blues KCBS’ 9th Annual Blues & Heritage Fest — Genuine Blues '89, became a reality with the support of MTSI — Metropolitan Transportation Services, Inc., KCFX-FM 101, Insty Prints Plus, KKFI-FM 90.1, KCUR-FM 89.3, and of course, all the volunteers made the 3-day fest run smoothly. ‘Thank you Marcie, Brad, Andy, Pat, Jo, Ron, J.C., Charles, Cheryl, Trashmouth, Kevin, Kate, John, Bob, Patty, Sonya, Pam, Doyle, Ann, Ruth Evelyn, Monte, Joyce, Kathy, Rosie..and many more! ‘You know who you are and KCBS greatly appreciated you being there! ‘The 9th Annual KC Blues & Heritage Fest kicked off with the 1st Annual Blues Club Crawl. From working the Eastside — Chateau Lounge, MC's, and the Inferno — I found people more interested in doing the bus stop on the dance floor at their “home” club rather than cruising on the buses. Also, 1 heard that the farthest clubs on the bus line — the Roxy and Nightmoves — reported a good size crowd at the beginning of the night, and buses took them into midtown, and many never, ‘came back. As far asthe centrally located clubs, the buses were busier. ‘One show of the 3-day event was a sure success — Johnny ‘Winter at the Lone Star. Itwas sold out and people were lining up in the alley. ‘On Friday night, the World Series and a rainy night, kept many blues people at home. However, the blues were flowing, ‘on Main Street and at either club — the Grand Emporium oF Harlings Upstairs — the music was top notch. The Pontiax were the surprise ofthe night. They opened for Lazy Lester & Loaded Dice, who were as smooth as black velvet. I doubt if the Grand Emporium has ever hosted such a legendary show with Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin (backed by Little Mike and the Tornadoes). Blues sparks were flying! Saturday night at the Missouri National Guard Armory was not as well attended as expected with K.C.'sfave, Tyrone Davis headlining. It was well worth coming out just to sce a rare appearance of ZuZu Bollin. Lonnie Brooks really ought the crowd to their feet onto the dance, and T.D. — Tyrone Davis — kept people movin’ and groovin’. ‘Again, special thanks to the volunteers who worked the doors, sold t-shirts, and showed up to help! Shirley Ovens INTHE NEXT ISSUE A Full Review of the KC Blues Fest ‘Genuine Blues 89 W.G. Handy Awards review 4th Annual King Biscuit Blues Fest Helena, Ark. My reservations for the Sth Annual King Biscuit Fest in 1990 are made because it is a must. It's an ‘annual event not to be missed by any blues lover. Helena is in the heart and sou! of blues country. I've been to the Chicago Blues Fest and will never forget the San Francisco Fest but at King Biscuit, the blués heritage is all around. Driving from Clarksdale, Mississippi (25 miles) between miles of cotton fields, slowly and steadily easing across the wide River on the one lane bridge, and landing on the corner of Missouri and Cherry Street, I felt like Ihad come home. There is not enough room in this issue to report all the stories abou the King Biscuit Boys, the Sonny Boy stories, the rivor scenes, catfish tales, and cotton bales. What isimportant is that although Helena’s bygone blues heydays are long passed, every year the second weekend in October, Main ‘Street, Helena revitalizs the blues. See you in 1990!
