Show Description
Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a live stage show at the Disney-MGM Studios. It
opened on January 7, 1992. This attraction is truly a mutimedia presentation. The
show combines live actors - playing Ariel and Eric - with puppetry, film clips, music,
water effects, special lighting, and lasers, to create an impressive re-telling of the
animated movie. Guests first enter a preshow lobby, which has low ceilings and is
decorated with nautical accessories. The main show is presented in a large theater.
Some of the best seating is actually at the back of the room, where the viewer can
fully appreciate all of the special effects. The pre-recorded dialogue for Sebastian,
Triton, Flounder, Ursula, and Flotsam & Jetsam is taken from the film, but has
been edited to better fit the stage show. Ariel speaks and sings live.
The Show
<Music plays, and we hear the sounds of the ocean. Gradually, a ship appears on the
movie screen in front of us, and it grows larger and larger as it advances toward us.
Finally, just as the ship seems to travel right over us, a curtain of falling water
drapes across the front of the stage, misting those in the first few rows. Green
lighting shining overhead on the mist in the theater makes it appear as if we, the
audience, are actually under the sea.>
Sebastian: (laughs) De human world! It's a mess. Life under de sea is better dan
anything dey got up dere.
<"Under the Sea" music begins to play. Please note: the following musical number
is performed as a blacklight puppet show. The stage is dark, and the puppeteers
wear black clothing, so they can't be seen. The sea creature puppets are painted in
bright colors that stand out in blacklight, so it appears that they are swimming
across the stage in front of us, under their own power. They dance and cavort
merrily.>
Sebastian: (sings)
De seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up dere
But dat is a big mistake
Just look at de world around you
Right here on de ocean floor
Such wonderful dings surround you
What more is you lookin' for?
Under de sea
Under de sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on de shore dey work all day
Out in de sun dey slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under de sea
(laughs happily)
Down here all de fish is happy
As off through de waves dey roll
De fish on de land ain't happy
Dey sad 'cause dey in deir bowl
But fish in de bowl is lucky
Dey in for a worser fate
One day when de boss get hungry
Fluke: Yeah!
<The stage goes black. Dramatic music plays, and we see the face of King Triton
appear, created with lasers.>
Triton: Sebastian! Sebastian! My daughter Ariel has been up to the surface again.
Triton: She could've been seen by one of those barbarians. By -- by one of those
humans! They're dangerous. Ariel needs constant supervision.
Sebastian: Constant!
Triton: And someone to watch over her. To keep her out of trouble.
<Fadeout on Sebastian.>
Flounder: Ariel!
Ariel: (sings)
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see
Wanna see 'em dancin'
Walkin' around on those
Whaddya call 'em? Oh, feet (laughs)
Flippin' your fins you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'
Strollin' along down a
What's that word again? ... Street
Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free
Wish I could be
Part of that world
What would I give
If I could live
Out of these waters?
What would I pay
To spend a day
Warm on the sand?
Betcha on land
They understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women
Sick o' swimmin'
Ready to stand
And ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions
And get some answers
What's a fire and why does it --
What's the word -- burn?
I don't know when
I don't know how
But I know something's starting right now.
Watch and you'll see
Someday I'll be
Part of your world.
<Ominous music plays, and Ursula's sidekicks, the eels Flotsam and Jetsam, make
an appearance at the side of the stage.>
Ursula: Now, now, angelfish, the solution to your problem is quite simple. The only
way to get what you want is to become human yourself.
Ursula: Oh, my dear sweet child, that's what I do. It's what I live for. To help
unfortunate merfolk like yourself. Poor souls with no one else to turn to. I'll make a
potion that will turn you into a human for three days. If he kisses you before sunset
on the third day, you'll remain human permanently. But if he doesn't, you turn back
into a mermaid, and you belong to me. Have we got a deal?
Ursula: That's right. But you'll have your man. Life's full of tough choices, innit?
(wicked laugh) Oh! Oh, and there is one more thing, sweetcakes. No more talking,
singing, zip.
Ursula: You'll have your looks! Your pretty face! And don't underestimate the
importance of ... body language!
(sings)
Come on, you poor unfortunate soul
Go ahead!
Make your choice!
I'm a very busy woman
And I haven't got all day
It won't cost much
Just your voice!
You poor unfortunate soul
It's sad
But true
If you want to cross a bridge, my sweet
You've got to pay the toll
Take a gulp and take a breath
And go ahead and sign the scroll!
Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her, boys
The boss is on a roll
This poor unfortunate sooooooooooooul.
<Ariel begins to sing, and we see gloved hands magically reach toward her,
grabbing her voice bit by bit and giving it to Ursula.>
Ursula: Keep singing! ... Sing! (evil laugh)... Sing! (more laughter)... Sing!
<As we hear Ursula laughing wickedly, we see a montage of clips from the movie,
briefly outlining the storyline of Ariel and Eric, and the evil Vanessa. Finally, we see
Ursula as the massive and powerful sea witch, causing destruction. There is thunder
and lightning.>
Ursula: Now I am the ruler of all the ocean! The waves obey my every whim! The
sea and all its spoils bow to my power!
<We see the scene from the film where Eric bravely steers his ship into Ursula,
impaling and killing her. Then, everything grows dark and quiet. Finally, the light
comes up onstage, and we see Eric lying unconscious on the beach, with Ariel
looking on.>
Ariel: (sings)
What would I give
To live where you are?
What would I pay
To stay here beside you?
What would I do
To see you smiling at me?
Sebastian: Hmmm, it's like I always say, Your Majesty. Children got to be free to
lead deir own lives.
<Triton magically transforms Ariel into a human before our eyes. Her fins turn into
legs. Since this is a family show, Ariel is now wearing a dress. Max, Eric's dog,
barks, and Eric begins to stir.>
Eric: Ariel?
Eric: You can talk! You're the one. It was you all the time.
<This is it. The big finale. They embrace and kiss, as Max joins in the celebration,
and we know they'll live happily ever after. "Part of Your World" music plays.>
