places of worship

LUOGHI DI CULTO STORICI E MODERNI / HISTORICAL AND MODERN PLACES OF WORSHIP
Far beyond their purely religious value, most of the places of worship in our country and throughout the world represent a
priceless historical, artistic and architectural heritage, as well as a testimony of different epochs, cultures and the creed that
inspired them. This value must be taken into account when dealing with a lighting design project that should emphasise the
historic and artistic heritage and make it more enjoyable.
Many artists have always committed to religious patrons, devoting their energies to paintings, frescoes, sculptures with a
narrative function. The greatest architectural works dedicated to worship required long periods of time in most cases, and
therefore often show overlapping architectural styles that bear witness of the evolution of trends in art and architecture
throughout time. In such cases, the illumination can be developed on different levels so to emphasise the distinctive elements
of on era first, and then of another.
In order to approach the project for the illumination of a place of worship, the lighting designer should:
- carry out a careful analysis - historical, artistic and symbolic - of the works of art housed in the building
- understand the pictorial techniques used for the paintings
- identify the most suitable architectural elements to support the fittings
- design a lighting system that does not damage or disfigure the architecture
- develop the system according to all the possible celebrations

ILLUMINOTECNICA E LITURGIA
- luce architettonica dello spazio
gli effetti luminosi: l’illuminazione generale, che deve garantire una buona uniformità luminosa degli ambienti;
A place of worship is not an ordinary architecture, it symbolises the people of God gathering in the temple. Therefore,
a good lighting design concept should start from a deep knowledge of the rituals, spaces and symbols that
characterise the building, in order to define the hierarchies of space through the use of light. Light should emphasize
the achitectural, religious and symbolic values of the building.
A good lighting design project should allow for different scenarios according to different rituals and moments of the day:
- service/emergency light
- light for weekday ceremonies
- light for solemn ceremonies
- light for particular ceremonies
- light for the prayer
- ambient/architectural light
In order to set a hierarchy of the spaces that characterise a place of worship, even the light effects must be classified:
the general illumination must assure an even brightness of the spaces; zonal lighting which is normally three times
the general lighting in order to limit the areas that the congregation turns to (such as the altar or the apses); accent
lighting that emphasises details and the main symbols during the ceremony.

– studiare impianti flessibili e parzializzabili

places of worship
all’illuminazione.
alle dimensioni e all’effetto desiderato.
minor impatto nocivo possibile.
è necessario utilizzare sorgenti installate all’esterno dell’edificio, con fasci lunghi e stretti

STATUE, AFFRESCHI, VETRATE / STATUES, FRESCOES, STAINED GLASS WINDOWS
A place of worship often houses statues, frescoes, stained glass windows that testify the
culture of a past that must be preserved and brought out by a good lighting. A lighting
designer should aim to emphasise the works of art and at the same time preserve them
from the harm that time and exposure to light can produce.
Every artistic element can be emphasised through different light sources according to the
desired lighting effect. Statues and monuments require considerable illumination to separate
them from the background: the shadows created by the illuminated subject can be exploited
to emphasise it through light and shade effects. Floodlights are appropriate to bring out big
sculptures, whereas small spotlights can be suitable to bring out some details of smaller
architectural elements.
The illumination of frescoes cannot set aside the deterioration of photosensitive materials
due to their exposure to light: this calls for light fittings with the lowest possible harmful impact.
Even the natural light coming from the outside during the day should be taken into account
when planning a lighting system that could autonomously adjust the quantity of light according
to the natural one filtering from the windows.
Stained glass windows are decorative elements apart that can be approached in different
ways. A nocturnal illumination that gives a vision of colours true to those of daytime requires
fittings installed outside the building, with long, narrow beams directed downwards to
illuminate the glass evenly.
A different approach is also possible through the nocturnal illumination of the windows
from the inside: an inside out game that allows to see from the outside what would be
conventionally banished to the inside vision.

spazi, i materiali e i cromatismi.
Visual hierarchies in a lighting design project are defined through different lighting gradients for different spaces and objects
in the places of worship, as well as through the choice of the most suitable light sources for the illumination and emphasising
of spaces, materials and colours. The light sources used in the project should guarantee energy efficiency, chromatic stability
during the whole lifetime, and low impact to prevent the photochemical deterioration of paintings and artworks, protecting
them even through the use of filters if needed.
Metal halide lamps assure high performances, lighting efficiency and they are particularly suitable for general
illumination, especially if the selected colour temperature range is between 3000 and 2800K.
Compared to the traditional ones, miniaturized fluorescent lamps have a smaller diameter of the tube and
therefore are suitable for the illumination of niches and decorative details; nevertheless they cannot assure a
good chromatic output.
Despite their poor lighting efficiency, low voltage halogen lamps are preferable for their reduced dimensions
and excellent chromatic output in the illumination of paintings and polychrome artworks.
Thanks to an extremely long estimated lifetime, complete spectrum of colours, white binning and low working
temperatures, LEDs are probably the most suitable light sources for the illumination of photosensitive surfaces in
historical places of worship, as well as for the illumination of modern buildings. UV- and IR-free light provided by LED
light sources is also essential for the illumination and preservation of works of art.
