Think of this:
Elimination method is regarded by many as the easiest and most convenient
method for solving a system of line are equations whose sum is an equations whose sum
is an equation containing only one variable.
Example 1:
x+y=4 (e.g. 1)
3x - y = 5 (e.g. 2)
Solution:
x+y=4 (e.g. 1)
3x – y = 5 (e.g. 2)
4x = 9
Solving for x: x = 9/4
To solve y, substitute x=9/4 in either or the original equations.
x + y = 4 (e.g. 1)
9/4 + y = 4
y = 4 – 9/4
y = 7/4
3x – y = 5 (e.g 2)
3(9/4)-7/4 = 5
27/4 – 7/4 = 5
5 = 5
Example 2.
x+2y = -1 (e.g 1)
3x-y = 3 (eg.2)
Sol. To eliminate x, multiply e.g 1 by (-3), then add the resulting equation to e.g 2
-3(x+2y = -1) -3x-6y = 3 (e.g 1)
3x – y = 3
Solving for y
y = -6/7
Check:
x+2y = 1 (eg.1) 3x-y = 3 (eg.2
5/7 + 2 (-6/7) = -1 3(5/7) - (-6/7) = 3
-7/-7 = -1 21/7 = 3
-1 = -1 3=3
Example 3.
x-3y = -2 (eg.1)
2x-6y= 3 (eg.2)
Solution: To eliminate x, multiply eg.1 by (-20), then add the resulting equation to eg.2
4(2x-5y= - 1) 8x – 20y = -4
-8x – 20y = 4
0 = 0 True statement
Remember:
Any ordered pair that satisfies both
equations is a solution to the linear system.
1) x-y=3 6. 2x-3y=1
x+y=1 4x+6y=2
2. 2x-3y=6 7. x-4y=1
2x+y=-2 2x-8y=0
3. 3x-y=-1 8. 3x+4y=2
x+2y-4 3x-4y=2
4. 3x+y=3 9. 4x+y=4
2x-y=2 3x+y=1
Remember:
All the guidelines in the exploration can be summarized in just two easy to
remember rules. Multiplying by zero is also included.
1. To multiply two members with the same sign, the product is positive.
(+) (+) = (+) (-) (-) = (+)
2. To multiply two numbers with different signs, the product is negative
(+) (-) = (-) (-) (+) = (-)
3. Any numbers multiplied by 0 gives a product of 0
(0) (any number) = (0) (any number) (0) = (0)
a. (-6)(-7)
Solution:
Multiply 6.7=42, when two negative numbers are multiplied the answer is
positive so
(-6)(-7) = 42
Example 2
a. (-3).(-4).(-7)
Method 1. by using the order of operations:
(-3) .(-4) . (-7)
(+12) . (-7)
-84

Substitution
Although the graphical method is helpful in visualizing the system of linear
equations, it is not always convenient to use. The accuracy of your answer depends on
factors like scale of the graphing paper used and the accuracy of your drawing, and how
well you approximate the location of the point of intersection. When an exact solution is
necessary, the system should be solved algebraic either by substitution or by elimination
of one variable in both equations. The first one is discussed in this section.
Solution:
The goal is to obtain one equation containing only one variable. Start by solving
for one of the equations. You may solve for any of the variables
Let us solve for x in e.g.1
x+y = 1
x = -y + 1 (e.g.3)
Example 3.
Solve this system of equations by substitution
-5x+2y=3 (e.g.1)
10x-4y=-6 (e.g.1)
20x-20x-12=-12
0 = 0 True statement
The variables cancelled each other but resulting in a true
statement. This means that the system of linear equation is
dependent system. An ordered pair that satisfies either of
the equations is a solution to the linear system.
The table below summarized the three possible results when solving a linear system of 2
equations by the substitution method.
1. x-y=6 6. 2x-6y=6
x+y=5 -x+3y=3
2. 2x-3y=4 7. 4x-3y=6
2x+y=-4 2x+y=-4
3. 3x-y=-2 8. 2x-6y=4
x+y=4 -x+3y=-2
4. 5x+y=5 9. 3x+2y=6
2x-y=-2 3x-2y=6
Thank you for listening. When you got 5-10 keep up the
good work, and when you got 5 – 1 try to read it again and
try to solve it keep up the good work.
