Elimination

Hello, are you ready to know what elimination is! If

you are ready now read this lesson and you will
learn something

Think of this:
Elimination method is regarded by many as the easiest and most convenient
method for solving a system of line are equations whose sum is an equations whose sum
is an equation containing only one variable.

Class, to know more what is elimination method &

how to solve it here are some examples:

Example 1:
x+y=4 (e.g. 1)
3x - y = 5 (e.g. 2)

Solution:
x+y=4 (e.g. 1)
3x – y = 5 (e.g. 2)
4x = 9
Solving for x: x = 9/4
To solve y, substitute x=9/4 in either or the original equations.

x + y = 4 (e.g. 1)
9/4 + y = 4
y = 4 – 9/4
y = 7/4

The Solution is (9/4, 7/4

Check:
x+y=4 (e.g 1)
9/4 + 7/4 = 4
16/4 = 4
4 = 4

3x – y = 5 (e.g 2)
3(9/4)-7/4 = 5
27/4 – 7/4 = 5
5 = 5
Example 2.
x+2y = -1 (e.g 1)
3x-y = 3 (eg.2)

Sol. To eliminate x, multiply e.g 1 by (-3), then add the resulting equation to e.g 2
-3(x+2y = -1)  -3x-6y = 3 (e.g 1)
3x – y = 3

Solving for y

y = -6/7

To solve for x, substitute y = -6/7 in either of the original equations

x+2y = -1 (e.g 1)
x+2(6/7) = -1
x = -1 + 12/7
x = 5/7

The solution is (5/7, -6/7)

The system of linear equation is a consistent system since it has one solution.

Check:
x+2y = 1 (eg.1) 3x-y = 3 (eg.2
5/7 + 2 (-6/7) = -1 3(5/7) - (-6/7) = 3
-7/-7 = -1 21/7 = 3
-1 = -1 3=3
Example 3.
x-3y = -2 (eg.1)
2x-6y= 3 (eg.2)

Solution: To eliminate x, multiply eg.1 by (-20), then add the resulting equation to eg.2

-2(x-3y = -2)  -2x+6y = 4

2x-6y = 3
0 = 7 false statement
Example 4
2x - 5y =-1 (eg.10
-8x+20= -4
Solution:
To eliminate x, multiply eg.1 by (4), then add the resulting equation to eg.2

4(2x-5y= - 1)  8x – 20y = -4
-8x – 20y = 4
0 = 0 True statement
Remember:
Any ordered pair that satisfies both
equations is a solution to the linear system.

Here are some exercises to do. Try to answer it

1) x-y=3 6. 2x-3y=1
x+y=1 4x+6y=2

2. 2x-3y=6 7. x-4y=1
2x+y=-2 2x-8y=0

3. 3x-y=-1 8. 3x+4y=2
x+2y-4 3x-4y=2

4. 3x+y=3 9. 4x+y=4
2x-y=2 3x+y=1

5. 4x-3y=12 10. 4x-3y=6

-3x+4y=12 2x+y=-1

Multiplying Integers
Hello to all of you!!! I am your teacher for today; I
will teach you how to solve multiplying integers.
I hope that you will learn so many topics in this
lesson

Remember:
All the guidelines in the exploration can be summarized in just two easy to
remember rules. Multiplying by zero is also included.

Class to know what the rules in multiplying

integers look at it are and read it here

Rules in multiplying Integers

1. To multiply two members with the same sign, the product is positive.
(+) (+) = (+) (-) (-) = (+)
2. To multiply two numbers with different signs, the product is negative
(+) (-) = (-) (-) (+) = (-)
3. Any numbers multiplied by 0 gives a product of 0
(0) (any number) = (0) (any number) (0) = (0)

To know what is multiplying integers here are some

examples….

a. (-6)(-7)
Solution:
Multiply 6.7=42, when two negative numbers are multiplied the answer is
positive so
(-6)(-7) = 42
Example 2
a. (-3).(-4).(-7)
Method 1. by using the order of operations:
(-3) .(-4) . (-7)
(+12) . (-7)
-84

Method 2. By using (PM and AM)

(-3) . (-4) .(-7)
(+21) . (-4)
-84

Class, do you know how to solve multiplying

integers?

Substitution

Hello class, I am your teacher for this time. Do you know

what substitution is? In this lesson you will learn what
substitution is and how to do it. Are you excited? So let’s
start

Substitution
Although the graphical method is helpful in visualizing the system of linear
equations, it is not always convenient to use. The accuracy of your answer depends on
factors like scale of the graphing paper used and the accuracy of your drawing, and how
well you approximate the location of the point of intersection. When an exact solution is
necessary, the system should be solved algebraic either by substitution or by elimination
of one variable in both equations. The first one is discussed in this section.

Class, know in that explanation you know how to solve the

following problems, To know it more here are some
examples!

Example 1. Solve this system of equations by substitution:

x+y = 1 (e.g. 1)
x-2y=-2 (e.g.2)

Solution:
The goal is to obtain one equation containing only one variable. Start by solving
for one of the equations. You may solve for any of the variables
Let us solve for x in e.g.1
x+y = 1
x = -y + 1 (e.g.3)

Substitute (-y +1) for x in e.g.2 and solve for y.

x-2y=-2
(-y+1)-2y=-2
-3+1=-2
y=-3
3
y=1
Finally, solve for x by substituting 1 for y in e.g.3
x=-y+1
x=-1+1
x=0
The solution is (0,1)
The system is consistent

Example 2 Solve this system of equations by substitution

-3x+y=4 (e.g.1)
6x-2y=-1 (e.g.2)
Solution;
Let us solve for y in e.g.1
-3x+y=4
y=3x+4 (e.g)

Substitute (3x+4) fo yin e.g. 2 and solve for x.

6x-2(3x+4)=-1
6x -6x -8=-1
-8=-1 false statement

The variables cancelled each other out result in a false

statement. This implies that there is no solution. The
system of linear equations id in consistent.

Example 3.
Solve this system of equations by substitution
-5x+2y=3 (e.g.1)
10x-4y=-6 (e.g.1)

Solution: Let us solve for y in e.g.1

-5x+2y=3
2y=5x+3 (e.g.3)
y=(5x+3)
2

Substitute (5x+3) for y in e.g.2 and solve for x.

10x-4y=-6
10x-4(5x+3)=-6
2

20x-20x-12=-12
0 = 0 True statement
The variables cancelled each other but resulting in a true
statement. This means that the system of linear equation is
dependent system. An ordered pair that satisfies either of
the equations is a solution to the linear system.

The table below summarized the three possible results when solving a linear system of 2
equations by the substitution method.

Possible Results Conclusion

1. The values of the variables can be 1. The solution consists of the values of
computed. the 2 variables. The system is
2. The variables cancel each other out consistent.
resulting in a false statement 2. There is no solution. The system is
3. The variables cancel each other out inconsistent.
of resulting in a true statement 3. Any ordered pair that satisfies either
equation is a solution. The system is
dependent

Now, you know how to solve substitution. In this time is

your turn to solve the exercises:

1. x-y=6 6. 2x-6y=6
x+y=5 -x+3y=3

2. 2x-3y=4 7. 4x-3y=6
2x+y=-4 2x+y=-4

3. 3x-y=-2 8. 2x-6y=4
x+y=4 -x+3y=-2

4. 5x+y=5 9. 3x+2y=6
2x-y=-2 3x-2y=6

5. 4x-3y=12 10. x-4y=0

-3x+4y=12 2x-8y=2

Thank you for listening. When you got 5-10 keep up the
good work, and when you got 5 – 1 try to read it again and
try to solve it keep up the good work.
