“Gone - Almost”
Isn’t it amazing how torrential rain and mild temperatures
can destroy twenty feet of snow in just one week!! There are
times, when the missus is annoyed with me, that I wish I could
disappear that fast!! While it is a little early to declare winter
over, it is very unlikely that the snow banks will grow back to
their recent size.
With spring near at hand, I am already working on developing
some project ideas for when the ground is dry. Now I don’t
mind sharing these ideas, but you have to agree to keep them
confidential from “old you know who”!!
Speaking of “you know who”, the first step in going ahead with
my projects is convincing the missus to sell off all her jewels
and at least one half of her wardrobe in order to fund my little
dreams?? This project alone may take me most of the spring and
summer!! Once I have the cash in hand, my first project is to
create a better home for my newest to me tractor. When I first
built my storage shed, my only tractor had no cab and the design
worked just fine and dandy. But, last year I purchased my 1980
tractor with a cab, and there is some difficulty getting it to fit
nicely.
Now most of you guys would just play around trying to get
some extra clearance by jacking the front entry up a little higher.
And that’s why, of course, you guys will never go far in this world,
because you have to think BIG. Now … I am thinking about …
new garage around 30 by 60 feet with a 10 foot high doorway,
which should give me enough room to work with. Oops, what
if my dream excavator went on sale ($99.00 plus HST)?? Let’s
make that doorway at least 12 feet high. See how easy it is to
think BIG?? Come on you can do it!! At least until the missus
catches on.
A careful review also indicates the need for a better backup
tractor. My original tractor is almost 50 years old, and while it
works OK, I consider it to be unsuited for snow blowing with
no cab. So the entire population of Burnside Lane is relying on
one tractor, that is over 30 years old, for snow removal. Would
your community be happy if you had to rely on one old vehicle
for all of your snow removal needs?? I think not!! (See how this
works guys??)
Since I am running out of space, I need to cut this off, but I wish
everyone the best of luck with your BIG project!! 800

Relay for Life – Almira’s Journey
I remember that day as
if it were only yesterday;
it all started January 18th
2010. For three months I
was sick, the doctors said
I had a virus. After finding
a lump under my left
arm on March 4th, they
immediately did blood
tests, still saying it was a
virus, however; I knew
deep down it was more.
Then the day came, May
10th, 2010, my test results
were back, and the words
the doctor spoke rang in
my ear….you have cancer.
Even though I knew
already, I was stunned at the same time.
The following week my journey began when at the hospital they
told me I had Non-Hodgkin’s Burkett’s Lymphoma and because
the cancer was growing so fast I only had three weeks to live. I
did not even know how to respond. I believe the only thing that
got me through were the words in my prayer time.
I was scheduled for chemo, and I was okay with that, until
I realized I had to have 16 treatments in my spine; “I lost it,
and was overcome with fear”. Throughout the night I wrestled
with God and finally gave in to trusting Him no matter what.
As a result of all the chemo, my body reacted in a negative way
with body sores, swollen eyes, purple nails, and sores down my
throat. With all that I was going through, I often asked myself
if it was worth it, but my prayers and the scripture gave me the
strength to carry on.
After harvesting my stems cell, they were planning a stem cell
transplant in hope of putting me in full remission. They could
not collect enough of my stem cells so they were going to type a
family member to see if one of them were a match ... this was my
only hope so it seemed. However, on December 1st, the doctor
came in and told me I was cancer free and that I no longer needed
a stem cell procedure. They called it a Christmas Miracle.
I am currently still in the hospital finishing up my last round of
chemo, only for prevention purposes. Throughout this journey,
I know without a doubt my faith has given me the strength and
has been in every detail of my journey from my visas, Medicare
to my healing. I am an American, who is working at the Salvation
Army Church in Sussex, and give thanks for my recovery and
never feeling left alone.
Being in the midst of my battle with cancer, I was unable to
attend the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life in Sussex in
2010 but was there in spirit. The Survivor t-shirt that was given
to me encouraged me and gave me hope. Thank you Relay For
Life. This year I plan to walk the survivor lap at Princess Louise
Park on June 10th, 2011. 333

CELEBRATE Wellness Leadership Awards
The District 6 Health Advisory
Committee (DHAC) wants to
recognize, promote and celebrate
individuals, schools, as well as
groups or community partners
who make or have made a
substantial contribution to the
wellness of our children and youth
(0-18 years of age) through healthy eating, physical activity,
mental fitness and/or other initiatives that promote wellness.
With the introduction of the new Wellness Leadership
Awards, the district hopes to encourage both nominations and
applications for each of these awards so that the many great
programs and services that help the youth are recognized.
There will be four separate categories up for competition.
Healthy Eating will look at initiatives that promote healthy
eating within our youth. Physical Activity will be those initiatives
that encourage active living and making active lifestyle choices.
The third category of Mental Fitness recognizes initiatives that
enhance the emotional well being, psychological health and/
or resiliency of individuals. The final category of Award of
Distinction is designed to recognize those events/programs that
may not fit in the other categories.
Aisha Khedheri, Chair of DHAC, states “this is an excellent
opportunity for us to celebrate those that support the overall
health of children in a very deliberate way”. “There are so many
great initiatives that go unnoticed. I hope we can give some sort
of attention to these worthy leaders in our communities”.
Applications and nominations are available at www.district6.
nbed.nb.ca/Celebrate as well as the district office at 70 Hampton
Rd., Rothesay. Deadline for submissions is Monday, April 11th,
2011. All award winners will be announced by mid-June.

DONATING A POUND OF HOPE
God blessed many New Brunswick’s who
were hungry and in need of a hot meal. One
pound of deer meat will feed 4 people and
100 pounds will feed 400. FHFH Canada
had a very successful ministry in 2010.
As we travelled to meet Hunting & Fishing
Organizations this year, we met a great deal
of hunters interested in helping their own
community and their fellow man. Hunters had the choice to
donate the full deer or a portion of the deer. With the FHFH
Canada up and running in full swing this year we were able to
donate venison to many soup kitchens in many cities. Hunters
donated their venison and FHFH Canada paid the processing
fees from a fund made possible by organizations and individuals
making cash donations.
Mobile one in Moncton, is an outreach program that delivers
hot meals to the streets of Moncton at night. They were able to
use the meat for Hot Hamburger Soup that enabled one deer to
feed over 400+ people with a hot meal. This is a blessing to many
that were very cold and in need of a hot meal. In New Brunswick
this season the deer population was down and we had many
hunters call and say next year they will donate their deer.
Adventure Quest Outfitters has donated a 2011 NFLD Moose
Hunt. There are only 300 tickets for sale at $40 each or 3 for $100
This is a five day all-inclusive (meals and accommodations)
moose hunt for one hunter in NFLD with $500 spending money.
All proceeds of the tickets will be used to feed the hungry. Please
visit our website www.fhfhcanada.org or call 506-433-9096 for
tickets or any information about FHFH Canada.
Did you know that one deer could feed 400 hungry people at
your local soup kitchen?
Three Ways To Help Feed The Hungry: Donate a portion
of the deer and FHFH Canada covers the processing cost for
that portion; Donate an entire deer to the program and FHFH
Canada covers the processing cost; Make a cash donation to
FHFH Canada to help your local soup kitchen (charitable
receipt given for donation)

to your group please contacts us: Caroline Trueman, www.

Cancer Society daffodils
– on their way
Volunteers will soon
be selling daffodils in
numerous locations
around the province as
part of the Canadian
Cancer Society New Brunswick’s annual Daffodil Days
campaign. The bright yellow flowers are a symbol of hope in the
fight against cancer.
Daffodil Days takes place March 29th - April 3rd in New
Brunswick and kicks off Daffodil Month in April. As part of
Daffodil Month this year, the Society will be introducing its new
daffodil lapel pin, which will be available beginning April 4th
at several locations in New Brunswick. The Canadian Cancer
Society is inviting Canadians to wear the daffodil pin throughout
Daffodil Month and, most importantly, on April 27th which is
Daffodil Day. For a small donation, Canadians can wear the new
pin to show their solidarity with those living with cancer, and
letting them know they are not alone.
Also as part of Daffodil Month, Canadian Cancer Society
volunteers will be canvassing New Brunswick neighbourhoods.
Please give generously when a canvasser calls.
We would like to thank the many volunteers who help us instill
hope in the fight against cancer,” Mrs. Dumont said. “We would
also like to thank everyone for supporting Daffodil Month.”
To pre-order your freshly-cut daffodils this year or to find out
more about the daffodil pin please contact the Canadian Cancer
Society’s district office in Saint John (634-6272), or call 1-800-
