All chemical industries utilize utilities, in fact no industrial production can be done without
utilities and the brewery industry is not an exception.

The components of utilities include Air, Water, Steam, Electricity and fuel.

Firstly Air, Air is present every where, it is been used in the brewery industry by their
pneumatic equipments such as air blowers. Cooling towers etc for cooling purposes. The
presence of air is needed in the furnace part of the boiler for combustion.

Secondly Water, The Nigerian breweries gets its water supply from dams which is a surface
water. This water collected is channeled two ways, the surface and underground tanks. The
water in the underground tank is meant for those operations that does not require the
purification of the water such as cleaning of the environs and also for equipments that require
water such as heat exchangers. The water in the surface tank is channeled into the water
treatment plant for purification and this water is meant for the production of the products.

Thirdly steam, Steam is produced by the boilers. The commonly used boilers are the fire and
water tube boilers , any of the two can be employed depending on the factors like capacity and
cost of maintenance. The Nigerian breweries, our case study, uses the fire tube boiler. The
steam produced is used for operations like sterilization of the production tanks to prevent the
growth of microbes which are detrimental to the products, and also for heat exchange
purposes etc.

Fourthly Electricity, Like every other chemical industries, the Nigerian breweries uses
computers in their departments such as human resources, quality control, sales, warehouse
etc. without electricity this computers cannot function, other equipments that uses electricity
include air conditioners, pumps etc. The Nigerian breweries has a standby generator in case of
power failure by the PHCN.

Lastly Fuel, fuel is used for burning in the boiler to produce steam. The type of fuel being used is
coal because of cost compared to diesel, natural gases etc.

The type of workers found in the brewing industry include the skilled and the unskilled.
The skilled include the Engineers, Technologists, Technicians, Artisans, medical personnels, etc.
i.e people that have undergown some form of training.

The unskilled include people that are in charge of the manual material handling, (manual
workers), cleaners that ensure the sanity of the environment.
