Car Rental
“Hurry, hurry,” her mom said as she was getting ready to go to the
airport. “We can’t be late for the plane.” She complained.
“I’m coming.” Said Teresa. “My bags are packed and they’re in the car. I
just need to get my passport and my money and I will be ready to go.”
Teresa’s mom had told her to get ready hours ago. She knew it took
Teresa a long time to get organized. She always told her to be more responsible
and to procrastinate less. She didn’t know what to say to make her more
punctual.
As they drove to the airport, they were both silent, thinking about the trip
ahead. Neither one knew what to say. When they arrived at the airport, they
rushed to the check-in. Luckily, they got there on time. They checked their
bags and ran to the gate. Their flight was not delayed. As they ran up to the
gate, their flight was being called. “Pan-American flight 2442 to The Bahamas
is ready for boarding. Please proceed to gate 6A.”
“We made it.” Said her mom. “I can’t wait to get there.”
“Me too. This will be the best vacation, I promise.” Said Teresa.
“I think so, too,” replied her mom. “I think so too. Did you pack your
swimsuit?”
“Nope.” She said, with a big smile.
“Hurry, hurry,” her mom said as she was getting ready to go to the
airport. (“Rápido, rápido”, a mãe dela exclamou enquanto se preparava para ir ao aeroporto.)
“We can’t be late for the plane” she complained. (“Não podemos nos atrasar”. Ela
explicou.)
“I’m coming.” Said Teresa. (“Estou vindo.” Disse Teresa.) “My bags are
packed and they’re in the car. (“Minhas malas estão prontas e no carro.) I just need to
get my passport and my money and I will be ready to go.” (Somente preciso pegar
meu passaporte e dinheiro e estarei pronta para ir.”)
Teresa’s mom had told her to get ready hours ago. (A mãe da Teresa tinha
dito a ela para se arrumar horas antes.) She knew it took Teresa a long time to get
organized. (Ela sabia que a Teresa demorava muito para se organizar.) She always told
her to be more responsible and to procrastinate less. (Ela sempre disse para a
Teresa ser mais responsável e procrastinar menos.) She didn’t know what to say to
make her more punctual. (Ela não sabe o que dizer para que a Teresa se torne mais
pontual.)
As they drove to the airport, they were both silent, thinking about the trip
ahead. (A caminho do aeroporto, ambas estavam em silêncio, pensativas sobre a viagem.)
Neither one knew what to say. (Nenhuma delas sabia o que dizer.) When they arrived
at the airport, they rushed to the check-in. (Quando chegaram ao aeroporto, elas foram
direto fazer o check-in.) Luckily, they got there on time. (Por sorte, elas chegaram lá em
tempo.) They checked their bags and ran to the gate. (Elas fizeram o check-in e
correram direto para o portão de embarque.) Their flight was not delayed. (O vôo delas
estava atrasado.) As they ran up to the gate, their flight was being called.(Quando
elas chegaram ao portão de embarque, o vôo delas estava sendo chamado.) “Pan-
American flight 2442 to The Bahamas is ready for boarding. (“Voo 2442 da
PanAmerican para as Bahamas está pronto para embarque.”) Please proceed to gate 6ª.”
(“Por favor dirijam-se ao portão 6ª.”)
“We made it.” Said her mom. “I can’t wait to get there.” (“Conseguimos.” A
mãe dela disse. “Mal posso esperar para chegar lá.”)
“Me too. This will be the best vacation, I promise.” Said Teresa. (“Eu
também. Essa serão as melhores férias, eu garanto.” Disse Teresa.)
“I think so, too,” replied her mom. “I think so too. Did you pack your
swimsuit?” (“Eu também acho”, a mãe dela retrucou. “Eu também acho. Você trouxe seu
biquini?”)
“Nope.” She said, with a big smile. (“Que nada.” Ela disse, com um grande
sorriso.)

He was in a hurry, so he drove his car up to the drive-thru bank teller. (Ele
estava com pressa, então ele foi de carro ao caixa na janela do drive-thru.) He looked to
see if his favorite attendant was there, Rose. (Ele olhou para ver se sua atendente
favorita estava la, a Rose.) She was, so he chose lane two to conduct his banking
business. (Ela estava sim, então ele escolheu a faixa número dois para conduzir seus
negócios bancários.)
“Good Afternoon! Welcome to Goodbank Bank. (“Boa tarde! Bem-vindo ao
Banco Goodbank.”) How may I help you, Joe?” she said into the microphone at her
desk. (“Como posso ajudar você, Joe?” Ela disse ao microfone.)
Would he ever get used to this voice over the loudspeaker? (Será que ele
algum dia iria se acostumar com essa voz de auto-falante?) He didn’t think so, but he
proceeded anyway. (Ele achava que não, mas foi em frente de qualquer maneira.) “Hi,
Rose.” he said. “I’d like to make a deposit.” (“Olá Rose.” Ele disse. “Eu gostaria de
fazer um depósito.”)
Her tinny voice came over the loudspeaker again. (A sua pequena voz surgiu
no auto-falante novamente.) “Please put your checks and cash into the tube. (“Por
favor coloque seus cheques e dinheiro no tubo.”) And don’t forget to endorse the
checks. (“Ah e não esqueça de endossar os cheques.”) I will also need a deposit slip to
go with that.” (“Também vou precisar de um comprovante de entrega.”) He saw her
placing the empty canister in the pneumatic machine and pressing a button. (Ele
observou ela colocar o tubo vazio no cano pneumático e apertar o botão.) In an instant, the
canister was outside his car window. (Em um instante, o tubo tinha chegado no lado de
fora perto da sua janela do carro.)
“Got it.” he countered, putting the paperwork into the tube and pressing
the button. (“Recebi.” Ele retrucou, colocando a papelada dentro do tubo e apertando o
botão.) A whoosh of air swept the tube back up and over to her desk. (Um sopro de
ar levou o tubo de volta para dentro até a mesa dela.)
She checked it all over, verified the deposit amount and put a receipt in
the canister. (Ela verificou todo o conteúdo, a quantia do depósito e colocou um recibo de
volta no tubo.) “This looks good, Joe. Is there anything else I can do to help you
today?” (“Me parece tudo certo, Joe. Algo mais que possa fazer por você hoje?”)
“No thanks, Rose. Gotta run. Have a great day!” (Não, obrigado Rose. Tenho
que correr. Tenha um ótimo dia!”) As soon as the canister arrived, he took it out,
removed the receipt and placed it back in the machine. Record timing! (Assim
que o tubo chegou de volta, ele retirou o recibo e colocou o tubo de volta na máquina. Tempo
recorde!)
“You too, Joe. I hope to see you again soon.” (“Você também, Joe. Espero te
ver em breve.”)

Apart from the excitement in the air, December 24th was a vacation day like any
other in the Brooks household. It hadn’t snowed yet that year. That added to
the electricity around everyone. Would they have their white Christmas again
this year or not? The children had made all the preparations for Santa’s arrival
days or weeks ago. Their stockings were hung. The tree was decorated.
There was even a plate of cookies ready and waiting, along with some carrots
for the reindeer and some milk to wash it all down. The children knew they had
to go to sleep in order for the magic to happen. They said goodnight to their
parents and went to bed. In the morning, they had quite a few surprises! The
snacks were crumbs. Their stockings were full of candy and little toys. The tree
had many gifts from Santa underneath it, and...it had snowed during the night!
Merry Christmas, everyone!

I just made it home for Thanksgiving this year. When I got to the airport, there
were long lines and many flight cancellations due to the weather. Who doesn’t
want to go home for Thanksgiving? Obviously, everyone was trying to get home
last minute. My flight was delayed, but I breathed a sigh of relief when the
passengers were called to the gate. I finally got home late on Wednesday
night, slept well and woke up early to help my mom with the cooking. We made
everything. While the turkey was baking, we made mashed potatoes, green
beans, a pumpkin casserole, cranberry sauce and three different kinds of pie:
apple, pumpkin and pecan. When the turkey was done baking, we made the
gravy from the drippings. We chatted and enjoyed our time together in the
kitchen. Where was everyone else? In the TV room watching the football game,
of course. When the game was over, we all sat down to an amazing meal. I love
being home for the holidays with my family. It reminds me of my childhood. It’s
worth every minute of the airport hassle to get home and share Thanksgiving
with the people I love the most.

My kids have always loved to go to the gas station. Most gas stations are self-
service. We simply drive up to the pump, swipe the credit card, choose between
premium, regular and unleaded and pump the gas ourselves. My teenager
loves this part. When we choose full-service, the attendant fills up the tank with
premium or unleaded gasoline, cleans the windshield and even checks our
tires and fluids. He or she will do it with a smile, and I never forget to tip!
That’s what keeps them smiling. That’s not the best part about gas stations
when kids are concerned. Gas stations have all kinds of goodies kids love.
They beg for a slurpee or a big gulp when we go there. They absolutely love
the hot dogs they sell at all hours of the night or day. At gas stations, you can
get your oil checked and changed, which is boring for kids, but you can also
take your car through the car-wash, which is very exciting for kids. They
scream when the water hits the car from all angles. They oooh and aaah when
the soapy foam gets slathered on and sprayed off. They love the rotating
bristles that scrub the car clean. And they adore going through the drier at the
end. Maybe you can’t afford to take your kids to an amusement park, but you
can always splurge on a special treat for your kids by taking them to a gas
station!
This is so embarrassing. I was stopped by the police while I was driving to work
today. When I saw the cruiser’s lights flashing behind my car, I followed my
dad’s advice and immediately slowed down. I turned on my right turn signal and
moved over to the right-hand side of the road. I remembered to turn off the car,
turn the interior light on, and keep my hands on the steering wheel, so they
were visible at all times. When the police officer came up to my car and told me
he wanted to see my driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance, I
remembered to tell him I was going to open the glove box to get them. He
nodded so I took the paperwork out of the car. Thank goodness everything was
in order. He asked me if I knew why I was being pulled over. Luckily, I
remembered to just answer yes, or no, and not embellish. I said no, and he
asked me if I knew how fast I had been driving. I said yes. I remembered that if
the officer were to ask me to let him search the car, I could respectfully refuse
unless he told me he had probable cause, but he didn’t ask me to get out of the
car, so I stayed put. He just told me I was going ten miles over the speed limit,
but that he would let me go with a warning this time. I apologised and thanked
him for not writing me a ticket. I asked if I could leave and he said yes. Whew!
That was a close call. I think I will drive slower on my way home.

Dinner time is a very important time for our family. It’s a time when we all get
together to enjoy a meal and talk about what happened during the day. Even if
we eat breakfast and lunch on the run, we always try to eat dinner seated at the
table without any distractions, like phone calls, television or computers. We do
listen to music while we eat, and sometimes we even light a candle or two to
add to the ambience. Last night at around 7pm, we had a typical family meal.
The kids set the table and one of them poured drinks for us. I had made a
chicken noodle casserole and my husband had made a green salad to go with
it. We all sat down to the meal and one of the children said the blessing,
reminding us of how grateful we are to be together and to have this meal in
front of us. When the blessing was over, we started to eat. There was silence
momentarily while everyone focused on the meal, but soon, everyone was
talking and laughing together. We hadn’t seen each other since morning, when
we all had to go to school or to work. We were ready to relax and enjoy each
other’s company. When the meal was over, we all cleared the table and put the
dishwasher to work. We all went to the family room to watch a little TV and
relax.

Each culture has different customs where dating is concerned. In the United
States, teenagers like to hang out at the mall, where they can go to the movies
or pick up something to eat together. Since teenagers are not allowed to drink,
they cannot go to nightclubs or bars. Teenagers sometimes have groups of
friends over to their houses where they can watch TV and play games together.
Sometimes, boys ask girls out on dates, and they go to the movies or out to
dinner as a couple. There are a few big dances each year where teenagers can
dress up and dance and socialize. These are usually held at the local high
school in the gymnasium and they are chaperoned. There’s the Homecoming
Dance, where the football team celebrates the biggest football game of the
season, and the Homecoming King and Queen are chosen. There is also Prom,
a celebration for the juniors and seniors, and there is a Prom King and Queen,
too. There’s another dance called the Sadie Hawkins dance, where the girls
invite the boys to the dance. These are traditional dances, and most schools
across America consider these dances an integral part of being an adolescent.

By the time I had my first child, I had read so many books about babies, I had
no idea whose advice I should take. People who write books about babies have
strong opinions, and many of them contradict each other. In the end, it’s a
matter of personal choice. Do you want to co-sleep? Do it safely. Would you
rather your baby sleep in another room? Make sure you are aware of your
child’s needs. Ironically, I was not aware of the simplest of tasks. After you feed
the baby, you need to burp it. In fact, the best idea is to burp the baby and then
play with it a little, waking it up so it can fall asleep naturally, without the added
sleep agent in milk, as it will become a crutch and your baby will need milk to
fall asleep possibly for years to come. (I learned this the hard way.) In a
nutshell, here is my advice for new parents. Love your baby. Listen to your
baby. And continue to do so through the years. The challenges don’t subside.
They just change. Your baby will challenge you little by little. First, just eating,
burping, sleeping and pooping, next there is the added challenge when it starts
to roll over. Crawling, walking, running, talking, and talking back are soon to
follow. As long as you cultivate mutual respect, you will enjoy a lasting, loving

Our wedding was on a beautiful summer day. Although many people choose to
have their weddings in churches or synagogues, we chose to have our wedding
outdoors, in the backyard of a mansion in Massachusetts. We had a non-
denominational minister; the choice of minister is up to the couple. We had our
reception in a tent in the same backyard as the wedding, but some people
choose to move their weddings to a different location for the reception. Before
the wedding, we served champagne to the guests. In between the wedding and
the reception, we had more champagne and an appetizer bar. While the guests
were busy nibbling and socializing, We had pictures taken of the wedding party.
We had five people on each side of our wedding party. Since I don’t have any
sisters, I invited five friends to participate, my closest being my maid of honor.
My fiancé/new husband invited my brothers and his brother as well as a few
close friends to participate as his groomsmen. His brother was his best man. All
the bridesmaids and all the groomsmen wore matching outfits. Our reception
included a sit-down lunch, but of course it could have been a buffet lunch or a
dinner. After the lunch, we had the traditional first dance, and the father/
daughter dance. I threw the bouquet and my husband threw the garter to find
out who would be married next. After that, we danced and danced, celebrating
our union. At the end, we left the party in a beautiful antique car, which had
been decorated by our friends. It was a magical day.
Tomorrow is the first day of school and I’m nervous. I’ve been through my book
bag so many times, checking to make sure I didn’t forget anything. I have
bought all the books on the syllabus, and when I went to the bookstore, I also
got some new pens and pencils, white-out, new notebooks, and a fancy three
ring binder to keep it all together. I’m also going to take my laptop to class, in
case I need it, but I really prefer taking notes on paper. I signed up for morning
classes, since I’m an early riser. I don’t like sleeping in. I’m not a night owl
either. I go to sleep early. Tomorrow morning, I’ll get up bright and early and
walk to my first university class. I’m anxious to meet the professor, and the TA’s
(Teachers’ Assistants). I wonder how many other students are in my class. It’s a
lecture class held in an auditorium, so I think I will have a lot of classmates. I’ll
try to get there a little early to get a good seat. I’d rather make a good
impression on the first day.

Vacation Plans
I went to Disney World a couple of years ago with my family. My favorite part
was when I went to Space Mountain with my brother and sister. The ride had a
very short line because the famous Disney World fireworks show was
happening at that moment. We felt like we had hit the jackpot. We ran right by
the warning signs that said “Space mountain is a high-speed turbulent, roller
coaster style adventure that includes a corkscrew loop and a three hundred
sixty degree loop. For Safety and comfort, you should be in good health and
free of heart conditions, motion sickness, back or neck problems, or other
conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers
shouldn’t ride.” We were anxious to get going. When we got on those tiny
coasters, my brother was very excited and held his hands up, even when there
was another sign saying: “Remain seated with hands inside the vehicle”. When
the coaster started moving, he bumped his hands on the structure’s rails! When
it was over, my brother’s hands were all red and lumpy, and after we got over
the shock, we all thought it was very funny. We were so lucky he didn’t get hurt,
and we could go home to the hotel without first taking a trip to the emergency
room.

Most anyone planning a large family get-together will tell you it’s not easy.
Making arrangements for all the members of the family is often tricky at best.
Elderly relatives, such as Great-Grandparents and Great-Aunts and Uncles,
need special care and assistance. Divorces have made families even more
complicated. Now, Step-Moms and Step-Dads join the ranks of the Sisters-in-
Law and Brothers-in-Law. Hopefully, everyone can get along for a day or two.
The newest additions to the family include Mothers-in-Law and Fathers-in-Law.
The youngest new additions are the new brothers and sisters and the new
nieces and nephews, who join the fold of the ever growing extended family. In
modern families, there’s also room for same-sex couples and of course
girlfriends and boyfriends. Families are not as simple as Mother/Father/Sister/
Brother. And, if your group is really large, you should provide nametags at the
event in order to avoid embarrassment!

I’ve worked in many places. In other words, I have been on many job interviews,
and gotten many jobs. No matter where you would like to work, it’s important to
remember a few facts. First of all, be on time. “On time” means five to ten
minutes early. During the interview process, it’s important to act, dress and
speak professionally. Wear conservative clothing which is not too revealing.
Wear closed-toe shoes. Be sure to have good hygiene. Tattoos should not be
visible. Remove piercings. When you approach your interviewer, smile, be
pleasant and treat them with respect, not familiarity. When you speak, refrain
from using any slang or swear words. Speak slowly and clearly. If your
interviewer asks you a question, take your time to answer. They would rather
you think about your answers instead of answering the first thing that comes to
mind. If you don’t understand the question, ask them politely to repeat it or
reword it. When you shake hands with the interviewer (male or female alike),
shake firmly and look them straight in the eye. At the end of the interview,
always thank the interviewer for their time and if you accepted a drink during the
interview, pick up the cup and throw it away. Little things mean a lot when you
want to make a good first impression.
