What is Doctor-QR?

Doctor-QR or Doctor Quick Response is a small and simple application designed to

assist doctors to give quick response while on their mobile activities. It works by replacing
normal caller handler box on Android OS into its own customized caller handler. Brief
information relate to the patient will be generated and displayed to the customized caller
handler. On this opportunity, we will not elaborate deeply through the web services behind
the Doctor-QR.
As a small and simple application, Doctor-QR only provides 3 simple functions; Add
Notes, See Details, and Close Call. To use those functions, the doctor should choose row
from the ‘Latest Medical Record’ table by ticking on desired radio button selection and
press “Add Notes” or “See Details”. Each of those functions will lead to the next frame on
the same window relate to their specific functions. All of these can be done while the
doctor still having conversation with the patient, assuming the doctor is using
earphone/any hands-free device/speaker mode.

Why Doctor?

Doctor is a kind of profession that need a lot

of carefulness & extra precautions, a single
mistake will change everything or perhaps
can danger someone’s life. Being crucial to
identify patient’s symptoms to get a better
diagnose is hard especially when the doctor
is currently having mobile activities or any
time when he/she is not in his/her desk to
get a clear information about someone illness.

Nowadays, having access to the cyber world is much

easier compare to few years back. Almost, every
person has cellular phone to communicate. Time goes
by, comes what we called as smartphone with it
variants. This smartphone is more likely to become a
mini computer that has many additional features, such
as; organizer, video call, games, etc.

Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc. are common

example for social media interactions it becomes
‘connectivity’ that bind us all. By extending basic
capabilities of smartphone, interaction between doctor(s) and patient(s) could be
improved.

Why Android? Why 4G?

Android by Google as a new popular mobile Operating System directly

competes with Blackberry OS, Symbian, iOS, and any other mobile
OS. It will be very interesting to use it as the platform for the Doctor-
QR application. Open source, available to many smartphone vendors,
& easy to develop in many workstation platform become key factors to
develop Doctor-QR application.
Fast adapted by many, Android has gain tremendous reputation among vendors especially
in APAC region. Below is rough estimation of Android growth rate.

According to Wikipedia, 4G is “the fourth generation of cellular

wireless standards. It is a successor to 3G and 2G families of
standards. A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive
and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as ultra-
broadband (giga-bit speed such as 100+ MiB/s) Internet access, IP
telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia may be
provided to users.”

By means of speed and other supported technologies by 4G, any

information relates to medical/health/doctor or any crucial
keywords should be retrieved as fast as possible. Every second counts to determine which
proper treatments/management should be given for the patient(s).

The Idea

The scenario should be like these;

1. Patient calls doctor, while doctor is not in his/her desk and can’t open any data
relates to the patient.
2. Installed Doctor-QR in the smartphone will intercept the patient caller’s number and
open connection to the medical web services.
3. Doctor-QR will compare it with medical online/web services database where
patient’s data stored and generate for the doctor max. 5 latest records from the
patient. If there’s no match data in the database, Doctor-QR will bypass it into
normal call handler.
4. Summarizing from the latest medical records of the patient and symptoms reported
by the patient directly will give the doctor more accurate diagnostic to assist patient
for the next action(s).

Behind The Scene

Yes, there’s should be at least one server (DB server, Front-end & WS – all in one) to be
placed on Internet serving all requests. Assuming, the doctor has smartphone from the
hospital he/she works on & Doctor-QR installed on the smartphone.
The smartphone connect to the hospital’s open web services that specific only generate
maximum 5 rows of patient’s medical records based on doctors’ credentials request.

Features;
- Generate latest medical records match with patient caller number.
- Provide quick note editor for the doctor to insert brief records for the patient.
- Direct the doctor to the patient record details.
- Close the connection with the patient
- Log any activities within services to ensure security & privacy between hospital,
doctors, and patients.

Using web services, not only Android that can adapt Doctor-QR features and
functionalities. Other platforms also have equal opportunities as long as the caller handler
interception supported by their APIs. Possibilities to extend features from Doctor-QR is
unlimited, it can only be limit by our own imaginations. Just do what is best for
communities ;-)

I believe it’s still very rare to find for similar products in the market, especially in Asia
Pacific region. Doctor-QR specific functionalities differs it from any products can be
downloaded from Android Market.

Currently, a prototype based on PHP is being developed to simulate Doctor-QR features.
