Hinsdale Center for the Arts is a not-for-profit 501 (c)
(3), Regional Arts Center serving the western suburbs
of Chicago with a wide range of professional quality
visual, literary and performing arts programs including
exhibitions, classes, workshops, festivals, outreach
programs, technical assistance to arts organizations
and artists and regranting programs. In 1996, Hinsdale
Center for the Arts was designated by the Illinois Arts
Council as an Established Regional Arts Institution.
In 1999, HCA was awarded the prestigious Governor’s
Award for the Arts. Revenues from operations and fund
raising events, grants from corporations, foundations,
and government agencies like the Illinois Arts Council
and contributions from individuals support Hinsdale
Center for the Arts.
Multi-Arts Camp 2011
Hinsdale Center for the Arts’ signature program, Multi-Arts Camp (MAC)
has provided a glimpse into the cultural life of far away lands to children for
more than 20 years. During this two-week arts immersion camp children
work together with HCA’s exemplary music, theater, dance and art faculty.
Each session culminates with a special performance and art exhibition for
family and friends. This year we are offering three exciting camp themes!
All supplies are included. Tuition per session: $250 members/$300 non-members

Teaching Artist: Tracey Ford
Location: The Community House, Hinsdale
During this multi-day workshop, participants will explore
singing and acting with a focus on improving audition skills
for musical theatre. Students will have the opportunity
to learn two 16-bar excerpts that they can use for musical
theatre auditions as well as working on and preparing a
monologue. Students will be exposed to vocal warm-ups,
proper body movement, character development, improv
exercises and cold-readings of scripts.

New! Photography Intensive

Teaching Artist: Jeni Lodolce
Location: The Community House, Hinsdale
Over this two week intensive, students will learn about
composition, lighting, and sequencing for digital street
photography. Students will document their lives and
surroundings through photography assignments, just like
the professionals. During this camp students will look at
the works of professional photographers such as Cartier-
Bresson and Garry Winogrand as well as critique their own
work. Camp will culminate in a final project or exhibition.
Students must bring a digital camera to class.

Art-rageous Sports Camp

Ages 7 - 11
Session 1: June 20 - June 24, 9:00 am - 12:00 p.m.

Teaching Artist: Suzanne Penn
Expand your skills on the field, while developing your
artistic talents in this all-in-one camp. Campers will spend
half the morning playing a variety of sports and games
while learning the importance of sportsmanship with
the sports staff. Then, campers will work with HCA’s art
faculty to create cool sport-related art projects. At the end
of camp, each camper will see themselves as a “champion”!
All art supplies are included.

Speak ART!
Art is an international language and connects us globally. It’s only natural
that learning different languages goes hand-in-hand with learning
about the arts and culture of other countries. With this in mind HCA
is offering mini-immersion camps that will allow your child to develop
enthusiasm and a beginning level of understanding by exposing children
to basic salutations, art vocabulary, songs and stories of a world language
while creating art that is representative of another culture. This theme-
based introduction is facilitated by two instructors who will create a
fast-moving, activity-filled atmosphere that immerses students in another
culture and another language for the duration of the program.

French Impressionism!

Introduce your child to another language through hands-
on art making, singing, and games. Art goes to a whole
new level when culture comes to life and is presented in
its’ original language. Your child will join a whole new
world of adventure in French while learning about the
French Impressionists’ style and techniques. You might
paint, do a collage, or create a mural inspired by Monet,
Seurat or Matisse while singing.

German Language Camp

The German Brothers Grimm named Rapunzel after which
vegetable? From fairy tales to abstract expressionism, to the
Bauhas’ Mies van der Rohe who immigrated to Chicago,
there is a lot of German culture to be discovered through
the language, music, dance and art of Deutschland. As they
say, “Deutschland uber alles!”

Girls Write
For girls entering grades 4 - 5
Teaching Artist: Carmela Martino
July 18 - 22, 2011
Morning Session: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Come join us for friendship and fun! This camp is
designed specifically to empower and affirm budding girl
authors. Activities include playing writing-related games,
listening to literature by women authors, experimenting
with different writing techniques, and providing feedback
to each other. Girls will write in a variety of forms,
including poetry, memoir, and fiction. They will also
receive help revising their work. By the end of camp,
students will have created an anthology of their work, and
make some new friends!

This class is a sequel to Girls Write, and combines the
techniques from the earlier class with new materials,
authors, and writing forms. Girls need not have attended
Girls Write to register for this course. Students will have
the opportunity to write about what it means to be a girl
and to have friendships with other girls. Students enjoy
the same supportive environment as in Girls Write while
delving into the art form of literature.

Writing isn’t just a school exercise, it’s an essential creative art
where anything and everything is under your control alone.
Where else can you turn day into night, call down the lightning,
slay the dragon, reshape the moon or level mountains with just a
pen stroke? This advanced version of “Writing for Guys” focuses
on long-form storytelling, character development and the classic
“Hero’s Journey.” Through a week of writing exercises, word
games, group discussion and self editing, we’ll spark a lifelong love
of words that will change the way you think of writing.

The tip of your pencil is a teleportation device: Just press it to a
piece of paper and you’ll discover worlds of danger, excitement,
mystery and quite possibly flying zombie dinosaurs. This class will
teach you how to use this wondrous pencil-teleporter to encounter
the characters, stories and faraway lands hiding just a sentence or
two away. During our week of creativity, we’ll play word games,
trade good ideas, laugh a bunch and write, whatever we want.

Mask Making Camp
Ages 8 - 14
July 25 – 29, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
At Mayslake Peabody Estate
The Mayslake Peabody Estate is the perfect theatrical and
artistic setting for this unique class. Mask acting is very physical,
inexplicably magical and a thrilling way to bring characters to life!
In this fun five day camp, young artists and actors will make their
own masks and then learn to perform in them during games and
scenes. This class will meet at Mayslake Hall on the grounds of
Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook.

Hey budding authors, get your imagination on! During
this week long creative writing camp, children dive
into the literary art forms of poetry, fiction, and drama.
Personal expression and creativity are encouraged in a
supportive environment. Children listen and respond
to each genre and experiment with brainstorming and
creative writing techniques. Budding authors buddy up
to share writing and exchange feedback. Each student
will receive help editing, revising and polishing his or
her work. At the final class, authors leap from the page
to stage! Campers will rehearse and perform readings of
their new creations for family and friends. Please bring a
pencil, folder and notebook to class.

Ready to pretend, play, and perform? This class combines
story time and creative dramatics to let imaginations
soar. Children listen to stories and creatively respond
through games, improvisation, movement, and drama.
As budding performers act out stories, they’ll use their
voices, facial expressions, and bodies to create characters.
Children will explore self-expression, build confidence,
and develop basic social skills. Join the fun in a nurturing

of Nature and Art

Teaching Artist: Ed Newmann
This camp is a fun and fascinating class in which young
people explore, through drawing and sculpture, the
astonishing designs of natural forms, and the simple yet
beautiful mathematics that make them possible.
By creating and sculpting their own flowers, beehives,
seashells and spiderwebs-- as well as imaginary plants and
creatures based on original designs (made from a variety
of safe and easy-to-use materials), students will learn
about such things as THE GOLDEN RATIO, DIVINE
PROPORTION, and the FIBONACCI SPIRAL, and a
number of other easy-to-understand geometric principles.

Multi Arts Camp Junior

Animation Camp
Ages 9 - 14
August 1 - August 5, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Teaching Artist: Ed Newmann
In this camp, students will learn basic pencil-and-paper
animation techniques, as well as character design, story-
boarding and acting for animation. Each student will
create his or her own short animated movie (with sound
track), and take home a DVD copy of the finished
production. Mr. Newmann has over 35 years experience as
a professional animator and animation director on feature
films, TV shows and television commercials. Supplies are
included in tuition.

We are taking Open Studio to new spaces! Each class
will focus on creating artwork to enhance your portfolio,
drawing and painting skills. Students will work in a
variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors focusing on
landscape, botanical and architecture. Katherine Legge
Memorial Park is plentiful with inspiration, and a variety
of natural settings. A $20 supply fee is payable to the
instructor on the first day of class.

A Surreal World Art Camp
Ages 6 - 12
August 1 - 5, 10 a.m. - noon
Teaching Artist: Jeni Lodolce
If you could create a new version of the world, what would
that world look like? Inspired by the art of surrealists
Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Rene Magritte, students
will use imagination and creativity to make maps, animals,
and new inventions for an altered version of the world.
Inspiration and examples include the world of Harry
Potter, Star Trek, and Sponge Bob. Campers will explore
a variety of art making including drawing, painting,
sculpture and mixed media.

Teaching Artist: Jeni Lodolce
Students will explore a variety of methods of print
making, and create their own works of art using these
methods. Campers will learn about how artists such as
Andy Warhol used pop art to create visually pleasing
designs!

Theater and Improv Camp

This is a class for anyone who wants to be on stage when
the curtain rises. Improvisation, theater games, scene
study and more promote self-confidence and prepare
students to audition for plays and musicals. Class will
culminate in a performance of scenes for friends and

Exploring Cultural Identity

Teaching Artist: Jeni Lodolce
Everyone is unique and different! Through this class,
students will choose a theme based on their own identity
or interests, and explore this theme through photography.
Students will also construct a handmade book, using
traditional bookmaking techniques such as fold, pamphlet,
and binding. At the end of the class students will have a
mixed media book that represents their own individuality.
Students must bring a digital camera to class.

Documentary Photography
Ages 14 and up

Teaching Artist: Jeni Lodolce
This class is for students with previous experience in
photography. Students will explore documentary and
news photography through photographing their own
lives. Students will examine a specific issue or theme to
photograph as a body of work. Students will learn how to
compose a photograph and how to capture “the decisive
moment” as introduced by photographer Henri Cartier-
Bresson. Critiques will lead students to a final group of
photographs.

The HCA/Salt Creek Ballet Program features a Summer 2011 Ballet Schedule
developmentally appropriate environment in which younger
children explore the essentials of movement and dance.

In this ten week class, students will learn basic pencil-and-
paper animation techniques, as well as character design,

a professional animator and animation director on feature

Dying Texture into Fabric

Shibori is a Japanese method for resist-dying fabric or very
sophisticated tie-dye. In this four week class we will learn to
create texture in fabric by wrapping it onto PVC poles, using
thread to stitch it, rubber bands to bind it, clamping it with
wood pieces and then, finally, dying it. You will be amazed
how easy it is to create your own original beautiful fabric to
use for wearable art, home-dec projects, and art quilts.

Photography Meets Art Quilt

No sewing required! We will start this four week class by
taking a nature photograph with your camera. We will load
it onto your laptop computer and learn to manipulate the
photograph to produce a work of art in itself. After we print
the photograph onto fabric (yes, fabric), we will use textile
paints to highlight the image. Then we will fuse the image
to quilt batting and bind it with hand-dyed, hand painted, or
batik fabric to produce a fantastic piece of art. A supply list
will be provided.

Celebration – America’s Birthday
Monday, July 4
The Hinsdale Independence Parade is scheduled to step off
at 10:00 am on Monday, July 4th. The parade will step off from
Sixth St and Garfield headed north to First St. Continue West
to Grant St, head south on Grant & end at Sixth and Grant St.
The Annual Independence Day Celebration will be held on
the grounds of Burlington Park from 11:00 A.M. until 4:00 pm on
Monday, July 4th. This event features an outstanding collection of
handmade arts and crafts and family activities. Refreshments will
be available for purchase and admission is free! Rotary Club of
Hinsdale Turtle Races will begin immediately following the parade

Ed Newmann - Animation
Mr. Newmann worked at several animation studios
in Hollywood including: Hanna Barbera Studios and
Walt Disney Studios, as an assistant animator on
the feature PETE’S DRAGON. Ed worked as a full-
fledged animator at Ralph Bakshi Studios on the
feature film THE LORD OF THE RINGS and at Bill
Melendez Studios creating several Charlie Brown TV
specials and the feature film BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE
BROWN. Ed and his wife, Monica, incorporated
Calabash Animation in 1985. Teaching experience
includes Columbia College in Chicago and has been
teaching animation classes at HCA since 2009.
Phyllis Kozlowski - Watercolor
Ph.D. Art education, Ohio State University. Former
Chairperson of Arts and Humanities Department at
Moraine Valley Community College, also served as
Vice-President of National Art Education Association.
Carmela Martino - Writing
MFA in Writing from Vermont College. Experience
as a freelance journalist include written articles
and essays for adults that have been published
in books, newspapers, and magazines. Carmela’s
first children’s novel, Rosa, Sola, was published
by Candlewick Press. Teaching experience includes
writing classes for adults at the College of DuPage,
Mayslake Peabody Estate and children’s writing
classes at Hinsdale Center for the Arts.

Exhibition include the Ann Nathan Gallery since

country. Patrick is a representational painter who

Madeline Shea - Visual Art
BFA, Parsons School of Design in New York City,
additional studies at the DeCordova Museum in
Massachusetts. Direct art programs for adults and
children of all ages in regional schools and art
centers. Exhibits throughout the metropolitan area
and works as both a freelance painter, teacher and
commissioned portrait artist.
Mary Strasevicius - Visual Art
MFA Southern Illinois University. She has exhibited
her work in solo and group shows throughout
North America and in Europe. Mary has been a
teacher and member of HCA’s Exhibition Committee
since 2002. Her work as an artist is inspired by
experience and in strongly influenced by avant-
garde jazz.

Jason Deroche - Guitar
Jason resides in the western suburbs of Chicago,
performs as a soloist as well as part of the duet
“ten strings”. Jason is also certified as a suzuki
instructor and is an educator and performer.
Mark Djordjevic - Viola and Violin
MA, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, studied
with Sherban Lupu, Emmanuel Vardi and Peter
Schaffer. Performed with many orchestras and has
a broad range of teaching experiences. Currently,
Mark is teaching at Benedictine University and HCA.
Dennis Dorris - Piano
MA, Piano Performance, American Conservatory of
Music in Chicago as well as studied and performed
at Salzburg College. Teaching experience includes:
the Fine Arts Academy and the IVS School of
Music and HCA, over 20 years of teaching piano
and chamber music. Dennis performs extensively
throughout the Midwest, Italy, Austria, and
Switzerland. Currently teaches at Morraine Valley
Community College in addition to his classes at
HCA.
Carolina Gomez - Cello
MA Cello Performance from DePaul University,
BA Cello Performance Roosevelt University. As a
member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra, she was
awarded a fellowship for the 2000-02 seasons.
Through the Civic Orchestra, she played under the
batons of Christoph Eschenbach, William Eddins,
Pierre Boulez, Charles Dutoit, Neeme Jaarvi, and
Daniel Baremboim, among others. Performance
experience includes: Festival Orchestra of the
Europaisches Musikfest Stuttgart, 2002-2003
seasons, the Colorado College and Manchester
Chamber Music Festivals, as well as collaborated
with artists such as Eteri Andjaparidze, Stephan
Hersh and Ilya Kaler. She is currently a member
of the International Chamber Artists. Carolina has

principal private instructor at Hinsdale Central High

Tracey Elaine Ford - Voice
Tracey is an active teacher and performer
throughout metropolitan Chicago. In 2008, she
received her D.M.A. in Vocal Performance and
Literature from the University of Illinois where
she was a recipient of a Graduate Fellowship in
Music. Tracey has performed in recital, oratorio
and opera. Currently, Tracey teaches private lessons
at Hinsdale Center for the Arts, Maine West High
School and Elk Grove Village High School. Since
2009, she has been an adjunct instructor at Joliet
Junior College where she teaches Music Appreciation
and private lessons. Tracey also serves on the
board of Chicago NATS (National Association of
Teachers of Singing).
Leah Myszkowski - Voice
Leah has a dual masters from the School of
Music at the University of Illinois in both Vocal
Performance and Music Education. She has studied
under Professor Cynthia Haymon-Coleman and
Professor Paul Grizzell. Performance experience
includes: Donna Elvira in the Illinois Opera
Theater’s production of Don Giovanni, supporting
roles in Illinois Opera Theater productions of Gianni
Schicchi, Six Characters in Search of an Author,
The Tales of Hoffman, and Street Scene. Leah has
also performed for DuPage Opera Theater, Teatro as well as made recordings for Bulgaria radio
Ariberto in Milan, Italy, the Baroque Artists of and television broadcasting. Performance

Michael Plantan is a graduate of the American
Conservatory of Music. Michael has been teaching
at HCA for over 20 years. Michael has performed
as a soloist and a member of many ensembles
throughout the Chicago area for over 20 years.
His solo performances include: local concerts,

he has been a featured soloist with various Support your Regional
symphonies. When not playing music, Michael helps
with his family’s custom frame shop business and Arts Institution,

for off-site classes at The Community
House must be taken at that location, all
other off-site classes need to be registered
through Hinsdale Center for the Arts.

Refunds/Credits
Withdrawals must be made no later than
one week before classes begin and will
be subject to a 10% administrative fee.
Students who withdraw from class during
the week prior to class will be subject
to a 50% administrative fee. No refunds
will be given for withdrawals made on
the day of or after the first class. HCA is
not responsible for providing refunds or
make-up classes for students who miss
classes. Class fees cannot be deferred or
pro-rated. As space allows, we will accept
enrollments after the term begins; such
enrollments will be pro-rated.
Cancellations
Please note that HCA reserves the right
to cancel a class, workshop or camp; if

We ask that all students and parents read and agree to the following.
Rules and Policies of Hinsdale Center for the A rts
We are so glad you are here at Hinsdale Center for the Arts (HCA).
Please arrive on time and prepared for class. If you must miss a class, please contact the office at 630-887-0203.
Music Students
Music students must register for the entire session. Private
music tuition must be paid in full at registration or in two equal
payments prior to the start of the midpoint of each session.
Private music lessons cancelled less than 24 hours ahead of
time will not be made up. Other make up lessons will be at the
discretion of the instructor. Contact the instructor directly for
information regarding make-up lessons.
Music Students should bring their music, instrument, and
pencil to each lesson. Music students are expected to practice
their lesson material outside of class. Music teachers reserve
the right to terminate lessons if there is a consistent lack of
preparation.
Visual A rt Students
Students must register prior to the start of each new quarter or
session, with tuition paid in full to participate in classes. If a
student is not registered they will not be admitted into the class,
even if they have attended the previous quarter. Supply lists will
be provided at time of registration for adult classes, supplies are
included for children’s classes.
Dance Students
Students must register prior to the start of each new quarter or
session, with tuition paid in full to participate in classes. If a
student is not registered they will not be admitted into the class,
even if they have attended the previous quarter. Dance students
should attend all classes dressed in appropriate attire for each
class, as indicated in our printed material, web site or requested
by the teacher.
Theater /Literature Students
Students must register prior to the start of each new quarter
or session, with tuition paid in full to participate in classes.
Theater students should bring their script, music and pencil to
each class, as needed. Due to the nature of some theater classes,
students may be asked to supply some sort of prop, costume, etc.
HCA R efund Policy
Refunds/Credits Withdrawals must be made no later than

HCA’s Wavier and Liability R elease
By registering for or participating in any class, program
or activity, the student and/or parent/ guardian agrees to
indemnify and hold harmless Hinsdale Center for the Arts
(HCA) and its officers, directors, employees, instructors, agents
and volunteers and all other persons associated officially or
unofficially with HCA from any and all claims for physical
or property loss, damage, injury or death from any cause
whatsoever arising out of or in any way connected with any
HCA program, performance, instruction or any use of the HCA
facility or any facility operated or controlled by HCA, whether
in whole or in part. The signer agrees that faxed signatures may
be accepted as original signatures. By signing this form, all
students agree to abide by HCA’s code of conduct.
Photographs or video may be taken during class, program
or activity and will remain the property of HCA, and may be
used for promotional, or news media purposes. Please contact
the office if you have any questions regarding photographs.
All required fees are payable in advance and
