INTRODUCTION

Concept art or Conceptualism originated during the

1960’s and 1970’s.

The work of the Dadaists is fundamentally

conceptualist and was not influenced by any
movement before it.

Artist Marcel Duchamp argued that the idea of a “work” mattered more
than its physical representation.

Both philosophy and the diverse kinds and styles of art and art-making
that fall under the conceptual tradition all have one thing in common:
they are both intended to make you think.

The above statement underpins all Conceptualist Art in existence.

An allusion of the yin and yang?
Or just usage of shapes and a
letter to create some sort of
balance or trendy symbol.

Middle S of the Balance.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCEPTUAL ART

Conceptual Art is a form of artistic representation.

It is a specific concept or idea that is often personal to the artist.

It is based upon the relation between the aesthetics and the philosophy.
Conceptual artists utilizes the available elements of expression to
depict not only the nature of objects, but often political, social and
technological subjects as well.

The concept of a work of art may involve the matter of the piece or the
process in which it is made.

Simply put, it is “art as an idea” intended to convey an idea or concept

to the viewer.
CONCEPTUAL ART CONTEXTUALIZED WITHIN POST MODERNISM

What is Post Modernism?

Postmodernism describes movements which arise from, react against
or reject trends in modernism (cultural movements involving modern
thought, practices or character).

Conceptual Art refers to a specific era while postmodernism is more of

an attitude and style used within this period.

Post modernism reject the idea that art can provide meaning.

Conceptual Art is hybrid of Pop, Minimalism, Abstract and Neo

Expressionism art.
