Computers for Beginners

This 4-session course is for those who have no knowledge of computers, but would like to get an

Adult/Active Adult Programs

idea of what everyone is talking about. Hands-on instruction emphasizes use of the mouse and
keyboard. Included in the course is an explanation of the main parts of the computer, developing
mouse skills and learning some of the features of word processing. This course can be a good lead-in
to Introduction to Computers.

Introduction to Computers
How will you use your computer? This 4-session course builds on the Beginners course to help you
see what computers can do for you. You will learn to organize your data files on your computer,
compose letters, send and receive e-mail, use search engines and other on-line resources. You will
not become an expert in any of these fields in 4 weeks, but you will find the possibilities and decide
what areas you want to pursue. Important Note: Introduction to Computers is the foundation for the
following courses:

Word Processing
Using OpenOffice.org Writer as a no-cost stand-in for MS Word, this 4-session course will teach you
to create basic documents such as memos, faxes, letters, resumes and merge documents, as well
as complex or multi-part documents, complete with bibliographies, reference tables and indexes. You
will also learn how to use features such as spellchecker, a thesaurus, AutoCorrect, and hyphenation as
well as a variety of templates for almost every purpose. You can also create your own templates
using the wizards. You will also learn to design and produce text documents that include graphics,
tables or charts. Those documents can then be saved in a variety of formats, including the
OpenDocument format(ODF), Microsoft Word.doc format or HTML. You can also easily export your
document to the Portable Document Format (PDF).

Introduction to Photoshop Elements -- 7

This 8-session course is for students who have little or no experience with any digital imaging program.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 is the program used to teach the basic skills needed to fix and
enhance photos. This FUN course is structured as a hands-on workshop. Topics include organizing
and enhancing your photos, emailing photos, creating greeting cards, wall calendars, scrapbook
albums, slideshows (complete with background music) and much, much more. The prerequisites for
the course are completion of the Introduction to Computers course and familiarity with Windows.
Photoshop Elements version 7.0 and up requires Windows XP or Vista. It is not necessary to own a
digital camera or a scanner. Word Graphics is a good lead-in for this course.

Internet
This 4-session course introduces the three most important aspects of using the Internet, information,
transactions and communications. It will show how to go “on-line” using either a dial-up or broadband
connection. It will cover how to choose an ISP, and how to “surf the Net” using a web browser and
a search engine. Students will learn Internet terminology and netiquette, and become familiar with
FAQ’s, Cookies, Viruses and Spam. In short, this course will change you from a Newbie to a Knowbie.

E Mail
This 4-session course explores all aspects of email and introduces instant messaging. It will show
you how to read, reply, forward and compose email messages. Alternative means of accessing email
while traveling or on vacation will be demonstrated. You will learn how to exchange family photos and
links to Internet sites. The prerequisite for the course is completion of the Introduction to Computers
course and moderate keyboarding skills are desirable.

For older adults and individuals with physical limitations or injuries, it can be difficult to participate
in an intense, standing exercise class. Our seated classes are for people who want to stay active
and mobile but want something gentle on the body and easy to do. You’ll be amazed what you can
do while seated in a chair! Our goal is to leave you feeling energized, empowered and smiling, so
you look forward to coming back All classes finish with time to socialize and share a healthy snack.

The Community House leads the Willowbrook Corner
Coalition, which is a group of approximately 21 agencies
who work together to provided services for the residents
of this neighborhood. The neighborhood, commonly
referred to as Willowbrook Corner, because of its location
in the far south east corner of DuPage County consists of four
apartment and condominium complexes. The residents are
primarily low income, minority, and most families consist of
single parent, female lead households.

The Community House has partnered with Burr Ridge

School District 180 to provide an Academic based and
Enriching After School Program for students in grades K-8
who reside in Willowbrook Corner. School District 180 provides
the program space at the local Elementary School, Anne
M. Jeans, which is located within walking distance to all the

Willowbrook Corner
apartment complexes in the neighborhood. The district provides
this space free of charge. The students rotate though a series
of enrichments activities, facilitated by The Community
House staff, and district 180 school teachers from 3-6pm,
Monday through Thursday and 3-5pm on Friday. The Community
House also provides day long programming, 8:30am-5:30pm
in the school location when school is not in session.

The Community House also provides an Open Recreational

Basketball program for the Middle and High School
Students in the neighborhood. The Basketball Program
operates two nights a week, during the winter months. The
program takes place in the gym of Anne M. Jeans, and is
facilitated by Community House staff and a DuPage
County Sherriff.

The Community House has been involved with and has provided programming
for the residents of Unincorporated Willowbrook for over 14 years.

The Community House is collaborating with Hinsdale

South High School (Hinsdale District 86) and will launch a
satellite pilot version of the High School’s Excel Program at
the Willowbrook Corner location in January 2011. The
Excel program teaches numeracy, literacy, and Executive
Function skills. The program will run 2 nights weeks until
the end of the 2010-2011 school year at the Willowbrook
location, and be facilitated by two Hinsdale South staff
members as well as one Community House staff member.
The space for this program is generously donated by the
property management of Hinsdale Lake Terrace.

Programs like this, which exist to meet a specific need in

this neighborhood, would not be possible without the continued
collaborations between The Community House, Burr Ridge
CCSD 180 and Hinsdale District 86. In addition, while nominal
fees are charged for the programs, based on family size and
income, these programs rely on and are primary sustained
