Abstract

Electronic waste or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment describe loosely discarded, surplus,
obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. In the present scenario, where growth and
development is given the utmost priority, the side effects coming along with it get neglected. This
demands usage of faster and smarter electronics, electrical products and that too in large quantities. While
doing so, the users fail to understand that the performance - delivering items will soon become E – Waste
once they get outperformed. E-Wastes are considered dangerous, as certain components of some
electronic and electrical products contain materials that are hazardous, depending on their condition and
density. In a survey conducted by United Nations in 2010, an estimated 100 Million Tons E-Waste is
produced each year and only 15-20% of e-waste is recycled, the rest of these electronics go directly
into landfills and incinerators. And it contributes to 60% of overall toxic waste. In China,
Malaysia, India, Kenya, and various African countries, electronic waste is being sent to these
countries for processing from developed countries, sometimes illegally. The situation is alarming
as India generates about 1.5 lakh tones of e-waste annually. The total waste generated by
obsolete or broken down electronic and electrical equipment was estimated to be 1,46,000 tons
for the year 2005, which is expected to exceed 8,00,000 tons by 2012. Many of these products
can be reused, refurbished, or recycled in an environmentally sound manner so that they are less
harmful to the ecosystem. This arise the need for the E-Waste Management. E – Waste
Management is a tool to control constantly growing electronic and electrical waste. By using
various E-Waste management technologies like recycling, Incineration, landfilling and reuse of
materials and e-sharing the issue can be addressed. Smart design bin concept is a great solution
of the electronic waste. This is smart design bin is designed to put in the residential buildings
permanently and have no negative environment impact. The sustainability of e-waste
management systems has to be ensured by improving the collection and recycling systems. To
identify best E-Waste management technologies across the globe and adopt them successfully
can be a key to a sustainable futuristic growth. This paper highlights the hazards of e-wastes, the
need for its appropriate management and options that can be implemented.
