Current FNPF Pension Rate
being reviewed
The Fiji National Provident Fund has
confirmed that the current FNPF Pension
Rate is being reviewed as part of its
Reform Strategy.
FNPF Chief Executive, Aisake Taito
has said that FNPF provides one of the
most generous pension schemes in the
world and the reform will address the
sustainability of the pension system by
making the pension annuity factor sound.
Taito said the Fund has acquired the
World Bank Pension Model known as the
Pension Reform Option Toolkit which
has been used to simulate pension reform
options.
The current FNPF pension rate is 15
percent for a single pensioner and 11
percent for joint pensioners. In the
instance of a single pensioner, this rate

Former Fiji minister to seek asylum in
Australia
A former Fijian government minister,
Samisoni Tikoinasau, has said he will seek
political asylum in Australia.
Mr Tikoinasau, also known as Sam
Speight, was in the cabinet of the previous
government, deposed in a 2006 military
coup led by Frank Bainimarama.
He was arrested and beaten last month for
distributing an anti-government DVD to

rights situation in Fiji is worsening, with
government critics being abused.

at a Brisbane hospital after fleeing to

FOSTERS LAUNCHES BEER
Patrons enjoy the latest beer tower that was
launched by Foster’s Group Pacific
The Foster’s Group Pacific beer tower
is the latest trend hitting pubs and night
spots around the country after its launch on
Thursday night.
Shaped like a lantern, the tower even comes
with a light in the middle of the flask, which
holds four liters or 10 stubbies of either Fiji
Gold or Bitter.
Foster’s believe that this will innovate the
way in which people enjoy their beer.

Rodan said the tower made drinking beer
convenient.
“A group of friends sitting together having
beer, what the beer tower does is provide
them better ways to enjoy their beer. They
can take the beer and just have their own
mugs with a more access to beer,” he said.
The tower may not be an invention, but
according to Mr Rodan, the innovation will
take the market by storm.
The launch was done at Shanninigans on
Thursday night, but Mr Rodan said the
Foster’s team would ensure that most bars in
Fiji had towers.
Mr Rodan said the brainchild of the marketing
team would also be launched in the West.
“Foster’s has the market share when in it
comes to beer. All the beer tower does is
providing another way beer lovers get to
enjoy their beer,” he said.
Whilst the tower device is sold at $150
by Foster’s, Mr Rodan said it was up to
individual pubs to set a price.
South Pacific Stock Exchange
trading improves
TRADING at the South Pacific Stock Exchange
improved last week with 24,661 shares raking
in $54,591 from nine transactions.
This compared to 21,781 shares trading in
11 transactions the previous week garnering
$39,987.
The market rose 0.97 per cent closing the
week at $761,602,644.
The upturn was because of a surge in share
price of Flour Mills of Fiji Limited by 12.5 per
cent.
FMF’s share price increase also supplemented
the total market return with a positive price
return of 12.5 per cent. Total Return Index
opened last week at 1668.69 and remained
invariable on the first day of trading.
Last week Tuesday saw the dividend per share
of $0.07 declared by Fiji TV reach its close
register date thus yielding a 2.50 per cent
dividend return.

transactions with 9327 shares exchanging
hands accumulating $28,541 in consideration.
The share price dropped $0.02 closing the

Mahendra Chaudhry denied travel to USA

A court in Fiji has turned down Indian-
origin former Prime Minister Mahendra
Chaudhry’s request to visit the US.
Chaudhry wanted to visit his sister on her
70th birthday.
Chaudhry is charged on 12 counts of
money laundering, tax evasion and giving
false information to the Fiji Revenue and
Customs Authority.
He will enter his plea on March 17 on the
tax evasion charges.
Justice Daniel Goundar stated that
Chaudhry’s frequency of travel was of
concern to the court as he had not entered a
plea since he was charged July 30 last year.

Suva’s CWM residents can now
breathe fresh air
The decommissioning of a sewer pump
station near Suva’s Colonial War
Memorial Hospital has brought relief
to patients and staff at the hospital and
residents around the area.
The pump, located near the Accidents
and Emergency unit of the Hospitals new
wing was prone to blockages caused by
the dumping of clothes, lint and other
materials into the hospitals toilets.
The resulting odor was a cause of
discomfort for the residents in the area as
well as staff and patients.

Heineken contest winner gets Sugar finally arrives

“I used to like other local beers but Heineken
brought me good luck, so I’m going to
stick with it,” the elated 32-year-old Nadi
resident said.
While he confessed to have never travelled
on board an airplane before, Mr Prasad said
he was looking forward to visiting New
Zealand.
“I am taking my wife, Shereen Lata, with
me to visit my family in Auckland, that’s
why I chose New Zealand,” he said.
Most supermarkets in Lautoka City still
have not received their supply of sugar and
customers seem to be asking when the new
supply of sugar will be arriving.
Supermarkets have been stating that the
supply of sugar to the various shops has
been on hold and now they are awaiting
distributions by Fiji Sugar Corporation.
Corporation media officer Samuela Railoa
said the shipment of sugar had just arrived
in the country and was to be distributed as
soon as necessary unloading requirements
were met.
He said the shipment which arrived on
Monday at the Lautoka Wharf would be
distributed to various supermarkets in the
country later this week.
He said it also takes more than a day to
unload the sugar shipment because it was of
a large amount and required a lot of work.
Most of the supermarkets are awaiting their
supplies to be delivered to them because
customers have demanded sugar for
household use.

Swami Shantamrita.
“It’s about the inner qualities in the leader
that the world needs and how he or she can
utilize those qualities.”
Swami Shantamrita will speak at the Shiv
Mandir in Samabula on the role of temples
in today’s world.
He will also conduct a workshop at the
Pacific Theological College in Nasese on
Saturday on conscious living.
“Conscious living is also stress
management and we will have group
activities at the workshop,” he said.
He would also conduct an introduction to

Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama seeks Taveuni
support
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama, for the first time since the
military takeover in 2006, has called on the
people of Taveuni to forget the past and move
forward.
Commodore Bainimarama arrived in
Taveuni and was greeted by Cakaudrove
paramount chief the Tui Cakau Ratu
Naiqama Lalabalavu at the Government
station at Waiyevo.
He assured the people of Taveuni that his visit
would bring fortune to the people, children as

people that this was the time to forget the
past and put aside their differences and move

Prices of selected building
products to go down
The Commerce Commission has announced
a set of maximum retail and wholesale prices
of building products for sale in the country
which will come into effect next week.
The Chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy said that
on an average the prices of selected building
products will go down by 35%.
He said a person building a house or
renovating it can expect a reduction in the
material cost of at least 25% after taking out
labour cost.
Dr Reddy said the new prices of building
items which comes into effect on the March
19th will allow hardware outlets to change
their systems according to the new prices.
He said all the hardware outlets have been
advised to have the new list of prices
available for public viewing.

Small tremors good for Fiji
TREMORS in the Fiji Group are recorded
almost every day by seismologists but they’re
often minor to moderate in size and cannot be
felt on the earth’s surface.
The epicenter of the tremors is between 400
and 500 kilometers within the earth’s inner
crust and most measure around three on the
Richter scale.
“It’s good to have small ones like that because
the energy is released from right down below,”
Sefanaia Seru, a seismologist with the Mineral
Resources Department, said.
“We normally record tremors every day but
most are minor to moderate in size and people
can’t feel it on the surface because it’s deep
down.
“There are actually two major active fault lines
- one is above the Yasawa Group and extends
to Taveuni while the other is in the South of
Kadavu.
“In reality, we can’t forecast earthquakes like
cyclones and even seismologists globally can’t
predict it - that’s the major problem.

“Only when it happens then we can tell and
how frequently it happens is all a matter of
timing.”
Mr Seru said Fiji was unfortunate to sit on the
Pacific Ring of Fire, which includes Vanuatu
and the Tonga region.
“Because the trench where the two big tectonic
plates meet is far from us, the Tonga and
Vanuatu trenches are the tsunami triggering
zones and if there’s a tsunami from there then
we in Fiji have sufficient time to be warned,”
he said.
“We have active fault lines in Fiji that can
generate a tsunami like in 1953 but the
probability is low.”
Mr Seru said the only way people could
prepare themselves from an earthquake was
by strengthening buildings and reinforcing
their houses.
“For a tsunami, people in low-lying areas
should have their own evacuation routes to
higher ground whenever there is a warning,”
he said.
Price drop in dalo affects farmers
THE drop in dalo price has forced some
farmers on Taveuni to turn away from
dalo farming.
Naqara dalo farmer Kaiyana Tawale said
he had been a dalo farmer for 10 years,
but the incentive was no longer there.
“I prefer being a crew of the Grace
Shipping Company because it has given
me enough to support my family,” Mr
Tawale said.
He said if he had continued with his dalo
farm he wouldn’t be able to cope with the
needs of his two children.
“Everything nowadays is about money
and we can’t just sit and wait for the price

of dalo to increase,” he said.
Mr Tawale said he couldn’t sit and relax
and watch his children cry for food.
“If I don’t work, then my expenses will be
more than my income,” he said.
He said dalo farmers working with the
Agriculture Marketing Authority were
lucky because the authority was able to
provide a good price for their produce.
“AMA is giving $1.50 per kilo of dalo and
the rest of the farmers like me will have to
go with 80 cents per kilo,” he said.
He said if the price of dalo increased in
the future, he would consider returning to
the farm.

strangers after an 85-year-old home owner
was robbed by three individuals.
The three individuals, two men in their early
twenties and one woman in her thirties made
off with $1560 in cash and $4000 worth of

Persons (FNCDP) received a new
15-seater van from the European Union.
The Union is funding a three-year project
on promoting disabled persons’ equal
participation in society, which also

Yanuyanutawa said the vehicle would
be used for the implementation of the
FNCDP activities in the most remote
and rural areas. “It will also be used for
carting assistive devices and technologies
like wheelchairs and medical supplies,”
Dr Yanuyanutawa said.
“The vehicle also has a pair of portable
ramps to allow persons on wheelchairs to

300 women, mostly in rural areas, have
become members of Hospital boards,” he

The Canadian Food
Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued an
alert last Friday about the shipment of
hazelnuts, also known as filberts.
A number of Americans have fallen ill
after eating the packaged in-shell nuts,
which have been recalled by U.S.-
based distributor DeFranco & Sons.
Two Canadians have fallen ill with a
strain of E. coli that matches the genetic
fingerprint of the strain responsible for
the illnesses in the United States. The
Public Health Agency of Canada is
investigating whether the two Canadian
illnesses are also linked to the nuts.
Some of the recalled nuts were
packaged and sold under the brand
name Sunripe in 454-gram bags of
either plain hazelnuts or mixed nuts,
with sell-by dates of June 30, 2011.

Feds spend $880K on tornado
alarm for schools
The feds have spent nearly $900,000 on
weather alert radios for schools across
Canada, a move that has left teachers and
the environment minister — scratching
their heads.
An unknown number of schools received
$50 desktop tornado early warning systems
that were purchased with money from
Environment Canada’s fund for new search
and rescue initiatives. The radio alerts
schools to hazardous weather conditions
and other emergencies and comes equipped
with a snooze-enabled alarm clock.
Bloc Quebecois MP Bernard Bigras, who
raised the issue at a Commons committee
Tuesday, said at least two Montreal-area
schools received the radios.
He said school principals contacted him
because they were puzzled about why
they’d been sent the device.

“It’s a useless expense that should have
gone to researchers studying weather in a
warming climate,” said Bigras.
He wondered why a government wrestling
with a $56-billion deficit would drop public
funds on such a device.
New Environment Minister Peter Kent was
blindsided by Bigras’s query.
“I want to investigate. This is new to me,”
Kent later told reporters.
“I made a commitment that I will take a
look at this specific device, how it’s been
applied and how it will be used.”
According to an Environment Canada
website, the feds set aside $881,400 to
equip schools with the radio receiver.

Guide leaders to monitor the broadcast for
weather information including warnings,”

the wedding of the year after all; with
the prime minister’s office announcing

accepted” the invitation to Prince William

The crisis in Middle East is dipping further
into the pockets of travelling Canadians.
Air Canada has introduced fuel surcharges
on domestic flights to shield itself from
soaring oil prices.
The airline tacked on an extra $10 each
way for an economy class seat on flights
between Canada and the U.S. as of
Tuesday. Flyers in the executive cabin
will pay an extra $15 each way.
“Like all airlines, Air Canada is sensitive
to the price of oil,” said Air Canada
spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick, adding fuel
is the company’s single largest expense.
The airline spent $2.65 billion on fuel last
year.
“Each time the price of a barrel of oil goes
up $1 US, that costs us $25 million over
the course of a year,” he said.
Air Canada’s biggest rival, WestJet, has
not introduced a fuel surcharge as of yet,
choosing instead to work the added costs
into their baseline fares. WestJet has raised
prices by between $5 and $10 three times
this year. A company spokesman said
it’s difficult to commit to any particular
direction going forward because oil prices
are so volatile.
A Porter Airlines spokesman said the
regional carrier is “evaluating the market
in terms of fuel prices and competitive
pricing” but has not introduced a specific
fuel surcharge as of Tuesday.
Canadian airlines are following their U.S.
counterparts. Prices at United Airlines,
Continental and U.S. Airways went up by
$10 a round trip this week, while Delta
upped its fares by between $10 and $14.
One expert told QMI Agency last week
airfares may be set for a record-breaking
series of increases this year as oil prices
surge.
All three of Canada’s biggest carriers
introduced fuel surcharges following the
oil price spike of 2008 when West Texas
Intermediate crude hit $110 but removed
them once prices came down. WTI
hovered around $105 Tuesday.
Air Canada already has fuel surcharges
for international flights.
Loonie hits 3-year high
The Canadian dollar hit its highest
level since November 2007 on
Wednesday, driven by rising oil
prices and concerns about spreading
Middle East conflict.
The loonie rose 0.41 cents US,
hitting $1.0335 on world markets in
mid-morning trading.
Surging oil prices have boosted the
global opinion of Canada’s economic
strength. Crude prices have jumped
approximately 20 per cent since
Feb. 18 in response to civil unrest
in a number of Arab countries. As a
result, the Canuck buck has gained
two cents versus the American
greenback.
Many foreign currency buyers linked
Canadian economic fortunes to rising
petroleum prices.
On Wednesday, crude prices were
stable as the April contract on the
New York Mercantile Exchange
dipped five cents to $104.97 US a
barrel in electronic trading.
Traders in this market are now
concerned that unrest in Libya and
other countries could spread to
Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil
producer.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch
raised its 2011 oil price forecast to
$101 US from $87 US and expects
Brent crude to average $122 US in
the second quarter.
But, earlier in the week, a report from
investment house Brown Brothers
Harriman said the common wisdom
might overestimate Canada’s link to
oil prices.
The New York firm noted that crude
oil prices have risen about 25 per
cent since February. By contrast,
the Canadian dollar has only moved
up two per cent, an indication of a
weak — not a strong — relationship
between oil prices and the country’s
economy, BBH said.

Ram Aarti
Aarti refer to the song sung in praise of
the deity. Aarti is performed and sung to
develop the highest love for God. “Aa”
means “towards or to”, and “rati” means
“right or virtue” in Sanskrit language.
In the other words, it is a song praising
the virtues of the deity. Aarti is generally
performed at the end of a puja or bhajan
session. It is sung, as a part of the puja
ceremony, on almost all Hindu ceremonies
and occasions. While communal aarti is
performed in the mandir; devotees also
perform it individually, in their home.
Hinduism has a long tradition of aarti
songs and there are different aartis for
different Hindu Gods. In this article we

Set aside enough time to finish your
work without rushing. You can’t just
squeeze your science assignment into
the commercials during your favorite TV
show. Really learning something takes
time. But if you find that you’re struggling
even after putting in the time, you’ll want
to ask for help.

Parents also can cut down on distractions,
like noisy younger brothers and sisters!
Teachers are also important resources for
you because they can give you advice

backpack. Teachers can give you study
tips and offer ideas about how to tackle

and getting away with it.
“I know he had manipulated the constitution
to suit his hold on power, I always had my
suspicion on this guy”.
Under Khan’s leadership the standard of
soccer in the country has ran into a cul-de-sac.
Evans said it’s about time the Prime Minister
of Fiji, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama
steps in and takes a look at the affairs of FFA
like they did with Fiji Rugby Union.
“Timing couldn’t be any better. FIFA’s ethics
panel must be made aware of Khan’s dark
side.

Hundreds turned out to celebrate cultural giant Brahm
Gyan soccer clubs player’s appreciation night in
Vancouver last weekend.
Among the hordes were players, officials and fans.
The treble champions landed home the cultural hardware
for 3 consecutive years in all 3 major tournaments.
Coach Raj Lal was brimming with excitement as his
players received the awards.
“We had won all the tournaments last year. We will
continue with our fine run come new season,” coach Lal
told the gathering.
He said the team deserves a congratulatory pat on the
back for a job well done.
“This night is dedicated to all great players, their
families and the fans. Without you all we wouldn’t
have gathered here tonight, that is to celebrate the
accomplishments.

Auditors report sought

An appropriation watchdog wants the Fijian
Soccer League of Greater Vancouver to come
out clean with its audited financial report that
was a miss at last month’s annual general
meeting.
The frets say the 800 plus strong member
FSLGV is duty bound to report proper manifest
to its members.
It said every little detail is combed with a fine
brush by the association but the financial report,
they say it’s no exception.
At this year’s AGM, the association came under
immense pressure from some club delegates but
their request was quickly turned down.
They were told a levy would be put before all
clubs should they ask for an audited financial
report.
Fiji Times Sport spoke to several clubs in
light of the leagues non compliance say it’s
an ongoing standard with the association, they
dispute paying for something that was leagues
bearings.
“This has become a common practice with
the association over the years”, said one irate
member who wishes to remain anonymous.
He said it’s about time the appropriation of
public fund being made transparent in its
entirety.
“This “don’t ask, don’t tell” attitude be changed
to “reveal all”.
The group said it’s very important that the
members at the AGM adopt the financial report
and not any form disclosures.
The association reported a substantial loss for
the year ending, 2010 and some members say
their explanation on expenses is vague.

U17 map out Pacific tour

Two of the brightest names in Fijian soccer
have teamed up to train and select a national
U17 Fijian side.
Soccer great Ivor Evans and renowned coach
Jack Reddy announced last week of a joint
youth development program and tour.
“Our aim is to recognize the talent and train
them so they could one day put the great nation
of Canada on the map,” said Evans.
The career soccer minds have over 2 decades
of playing and coaching success between them.
The Fijian U17 side had an open tryout last
Sunday at Kabbadi Park in Surrey.
“We had a great turnout for the first run. We
encourage all U17’s to come out for the next
scheduled training at Kabbadi Park Sunday.
The U17 national side would tour the pacific
region in August that is made possible through
tour coordinator Sudesh Dayal’s contact
overseas.
“From now to August the focus would be on
ball work, set plays and technical coaching.
Evans was the lone Fijian player to secure
a lucrative professional contract with the
Vancouver 86’ers in 1986.
Reddy, a fine coach was on loan recently to Fiji
Football Association where he was the technical
director of Fiji national women’s side.
The two are confident with their new player
development mentality, they will set new
standard.

Canadian snowball
fight title on the line
A snowball war is raging in Edmonton this
weekend as more than 100 teams compete in
Canada’s first Yukigassen championship.
Yukigassen is Japanese for snow battle, and
Japan is where the format for the snowball
fights originates.
One of the teams taking part qualified at a
Yukigassen tournament in Saskatoon in January,
but most competitors are new to the sport.
The snowballs in the tournament are pre-
made to a uniform size, and novices have been
surprised at how hard they are.
Organizer Dave Hennessey says the snow in
Western Canada is very cold and very dry, so
the snow has to be warmed and a small amount
of moisture is added to make the snowballs hold
together.
Many of the balls this weekend are so solid that
you can stand on them and they don’t break, so
competitors typically wear helmets and goggles.

Whitecaps lock up midfielder Chiumiento

with MLS contract
It took long enough to get the deal done, but
playmaking Swiss international midfielder
Davide Chiumiento has finally become a member
of the 2011 Vancouver Whitecaps.
The club made it official Tuesday, making
Chiumiento the 18th player signed to a Major
League Soccer contract with Vancouver. MLS
teams can carry up to 30 players on their roster.
The highly skilled 26-year-old Chiumiento
arrived in Vancouver more than six months ago
and there was never any doubt the former FC
Lucerne star came to play MLS soccer.
Chiumiento said red tape delayed the inevitable
MLS contract signing.
“Here in MLS, we have a lot of rules and
everything must be 100 per cent,” he said. “…
Now I’m happy and when a player is happy, he
can be at his best.”
The 5-7, 150-pounder — who can play on the
wing or as an attacking midfielder or withdrawn
striker — hurt his left ankle in training two
weeks ago and is working hard to be ready for
the March 19 season opener against Toronto FC.
When he’s ready, Chiumiento promises to be a
lot better than he was with Vancouver in USSF
D-2 play last year, when he had no goals or
assists in five appearances.
“Last year was tough because I hadn’t played for
four months,” he said, admitting he wasn’t fully
fit at the time. “Now I feel much better and I want
to show everybody that last year was not me, it
was my cousin, because I can play much better
than last year.”
Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi hopes
fans will be entertained by Chiumiento’s
substantial skill set. He’s been called “the Swiss
Ronaldinho.”
“He brings a flair,” Lenarduzzi said. “I think the
game lacks flair and that kind of player. There are
players that will do a good job for you and be,
for the most part, pretty predictable and there’s
nothing wrong with that. But I personally love to
see guys that will get on the ball and look to take
people on.”
He said Chiumiento’s foot and ball skills won’t
always get him past players but expects many
fans will be excited by his efforts.
“To me, we’re still in a sell mode here,”
Lenarduzzi said. “We’re not Europe and we’re
not South America where people are just going
to keep coming. We need to entertain the fans
and I think he’s the kind of player that can do
that.”
Chiumiento, who developed his game in the
Juventus youth system, played for the Italian and
Swiss U-21 national teams before he got his first
cap with the Swiss senior national side last year.
He is the third former Swiss Super League player
on Vancouver’s roster, along with former FC
Zurich defender Alain Rochat and former FC
Zurich striker Eric Hassli.
The Whitecaps made Hassli their first designated
player last week — meaning he will make
substantially more than $335,000 a year — and
Chiumiento is excited about his arrival this week.
He played against Hassli at least 10 times in the
Swiss Super League.
“He will be great on the field,” Chiumiento said
of the 6-4 Hassli. “He’s very big and can score
but he’s also very skillful.”
He said Hassli reminds him of 6-5 AC Milan
striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic — “big but also very
technical.”
Chiumiento and Rochat spoke with Hassli by
phone about two weeks ago but Chiumiento
isn’t sure if that conversation convinced the big
striker to come to Vancouver.
“But it’s always nice for a player to hear that
other players are there and feel comfortable,”
he said. We told him it’s a great opportunity for
everybody.”
Hassli is expected to arrive in Vancouver soon
but it’s not clear if he will play Saturday in an
exhibition game against Colorado Rapids at
Empire Field.
SIDE KICKS: Whitecaps part-owner Steve
Nash will attend the March 19 season opener
at Empire Field against Toronto FC. Club chief
executive officer Paul Barber said Nash will
participate in pre-match festivities and expects
his presence will lift fans, players, coaches and

The club released 2,500 more tickets Tuesday
for the March 19 game and Barber expects they
will sell quickly, noting a previous release of a

UFC considering earlier C.J. Cox takes
start time for UFC 129 transitioning to a new
UFC is reportedly thinking about moving up
the start time of the pay-per-view portion of
UFC 129 to 9 p.m. E.T.
Two sources confirmed that at least one date
will definitely be impacted. The change will
be in play for the first time at April’s massive
UFC 129 event in Toronto, which will take
place on April 30. On that night, the pay-
per-view telecast will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6
p.m. PT, one hour ahead of its usual time.
This comes as welcome news for a few different
groups.
First, for print and television media, an earlier
start time means that they have a chance at

what they’re in store for when
Bobby and Peter Farrelly take to the
screen. Joint directors exraordinaire,
this pair has been responsible for
some of the most brilliant comedies
in decades. Out to prove that their
mega hit There’s Something About
Mary was no fluke, not that such a
show of faith was necessary, their
latest feat shows warmth and heart
– along with the requisite number of
comical missteps.
Marriage can be a tough process.
Two couples in particular form the
backbone of this 105 minute sage.
Workaholic men Fred and Rick are
married to two impressive women,
Grace and Maggie. Macho men
these guys ain’t as embodied bys
quirky Owen Wilson (Marley &

back and let the actors and audiences
grapple with what’s unfolding. Full
of heart and smarts Hall Pass benefits
from a buoyant supporting cast
including Australian import Nicky
Whelen (Halloween II) who sizzles
as a barista and Larry Joe Campbell
(Killers) who gives new meaning to
proper clothing.
Lots of uncontrolled situations arise
in Hall Pass that piles on the irony
and hilarity. Very funny are the
husband’s buddies who tag along
as sort of cheerleaders to their
conquest opportunities. Accents
and stereotypes aside, this very
good and talented cast seems to be
enjoying themselves with Joy Behar
and particularly Stephen Merchant

climbing to skating and basketball - not
to mention intriguing ports of call - it’s no
surprise that cruising is one of the fastest
growing sectors of the travel industry.
Many believe one of the best vacations for
families is on the high seas.
Over the past decade, multi-generational
cruising in particular has taken off.
“Cruising is definitely popular with
families, mostly because everybody can
do their own thing, get together for dinner
and then do their own thing again,” says
Expedia CruiseShipCenters spokesperson
John Felice. “Your time together can be
both ship time and time ashore.”
Here are some hints to help your family get
the most out of your floating adventure:
Take advantage of kids programs. Many
cruise lines offer children’s programs in
distinct age groups and with their own
facilities, activities and counselors. If it
matters to you how much time your kids
spend playing video games, set limits.
Enjoy adult time but don’t forget to take
advantage of opportunities for shared
experiences as a family.
Keep in touch. One of the appeals of
cruising is that kids can enjoy some
independence, but if you don’t want to
worry about connecting with one another
on a large ship, find out if your cruise line
offers a pager service. If not, take along
your own two-way radios rather than
cell phones and save costly international

As we get ready to turn our clocks
forward this Saturday night for the start
of Daylight Savings Time, ICBC is
reminding everyone to take extra care
as the time change can affect us all in
different ways.
“Studies show that the switch into
Daylight Savings Time can have a
dramatic effect on disrupting our
regular sleep cycle,” said Dr. John
Vavrik, a psychologist with ICBC. “The
transition into Daylight Savings Time
puts us out of sync with our circadian
rhythm and this can pose some unique
dangers on our roads.”
The biggest impacts can be felt on some
of the key skills that affect the quality
of our driving, poorer concentration,
alertness behind the wheel and reaction
time to potential hazards.
“The real danger is that people believe
if they don’t feel tired, then they aren’t
fatigued,” said Vavrik. “However,
while you may feel fine, your circadian
rhythm can still be significantly
disrupted which can affect your
alertness while driving.”
The impact of the loss of an hour sleep
can lead to us being impaired as drivers.
When most of us think of impaired
driving, we think of people who drink
and drive. But anything that decreases
your ability to judge the situation
around you and to react appropriately
can be dangerous.
“Fatigue is a serious impairment, its
real risk is that we don’t often realize
how much it affects us when we drive,”
said Vavrik. “Fatigue can be especially
dangerous when combined with other
distractions behind the wheel. You
really need to limit any potential
distractions at this time more than
ever.”
To help ease into the time adjustment,
follow the time change on Saturday
night, and not just on the Sunday
morning.
“We tend to move our clocks forward
an hour on the Saturday evening and
then when we look at the clock and
see it’s 11p.m. we say, ‘Oh, it’s really
only 10p.m.,’ so we believe we have an
extra hour to stay up,” said Vavrik. “In
reality, that extra hour is gone by the
morning.”
Whether you’re a driver, cyclist or
pedestrian, keep to your regular sleep/
wake cycle and get some good sleep
this weekend.

-If the water is still running, fill a bathtub
and other containers. Remember, there’s
water available too in a hot water tank and
toilet reservoir.
-Food- keep a supply of non-perishable
food handy, such as canned and
dehydrated food, dried fruit and canned
juices. Rotate periodically to keep them
fresh. Remember a manual can opener.
-Flashlight and spare batteries. Keep the
flashlight near your bed. Batteries should
be separate in your kit.
-Battery AM/FM radio and spare batteries,
stored separately in waterproof bags.
-Essential medication and supplies for
infants, elderly persons and those with
special needs. Keep at least a one-week
supply in your emergency kit. Include
copies of prescriptions for your medicine
and glasses.
-Personal toiletry items- toilet tissue,
soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.
-Class ABC fire extinguisher. Keep it in a
handy location in your home, after testing
according to directions.
-Wrench (crescent or pipe) to turn off
natural gas. Keep it in a handy place or in
your emergency kit.
Other items you may wish to include:
-gloves, outdoor/winter clothing
-waterproof matches and candles- but
don’t use them if there are gas leaks or
spilled flammable liquids
-money, including coins (25 cents) for
telephones, because banks and credit
cards may not be usable
-a sleeping bag for each member of your
family
-garbage bags
-a portable toilet
-rope, heavy tape
-a crowbar or pry bar
-a gasoline generator and a rated extension
cord
-earthquake buddies for children
(eg: stuffed animal, doll game)
-evacuation pack for each person-vehicle
pack for each vehicle
-office pack

The items in this list are in addition to
the supplies in your home emergency kit.
They should be kept in a separate pack
(eg. in a tote bag) which each person
would take individually if you have to
evacuate.
Remember packs for small children, the
elderly, and the handicapped in your

In a medical emergency, calling for an
ambulance could mean the difference
between life and death. However, people
sometimes hesitate to call because they
are not sure if the situation qualifies as

911. The people who take your call are

so that you can recognise a medical

What is a medical emergency?

•Haemorrhages – major uncontrolled
bleeding.
•Bleeding – that does not stop after at
least 10 minutes of continuous pressure.
•Back pain (severe) – after a fall or

Wet Gangrene Symptoms
Wet type of gangrene is developed
in certain moist tissues of the body,
wherein there is sudden cessation of
blood circulation. Taking this into
consideration a moist gangrene is
mostly caused due to severe accidental
injuries or trauma. Signs and symptoms
of wet or moist gangrene are:
•Running a high temperature
•Inflammation over the affected areas
•Sharp painful feeling
•Unusual oozing of fluids
•Foul odor coming from affected area
•Blackish skin coloration
Gas Gangrene Symptoms
The common cause of gas gangrene
is infection by bacteria (Clostridia
strain), which results in accumulation
of toxic gas underneath the skin layer.
Eventually, the cells and tissues that are
exposed to the toxic gas die and become
non-functional. Associated symptoms
of gas gangrene are:
•Swelling of the wounds
•Seething pain over the area
•Wound infection
•Bloody discharge from the affected
area
•Cracking sensation when pressed

•Fever that does not subside
•Increased breathing and heart rate
Gangrene being a life-threatening
medical condition, immediate
treatment is essential to avoid certain

fight colon cancer
Tel Aviv University researchers have
discovered that turmeric’s active
ingredient called curcumin amplifies
the therapeutic activity of highly toxic
anti-inflammatory drugs used to fight
colon cancer when used at high doses.
Turmeric, a bright yellow spice
from south Asia belonging to the
ginger family, is the main ingredient
in curries — and ancient wisdom
suggests that it’s also good for your
health.
Dr. Shahar Lev-Ari of Tel Aviv
University’s School of Public Health
at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine
and his colleagues have found that
curcumin can fight cancer when used
in combination with a popular anti-
inflammatory drug, alleviating the
inflammatory response caused when
cancer takes root in the body.

has already had promising results in
human clinical trials.

patient manifests shortness of breath,
confusion and low blood pressure.
As a part of the treatment approach,
an appropriate antibiotic course and
pain relievers are prescribed for all
types of gangrene. After that, the
physician may recommend a surgical
procedure, either for restoring the lost
blood supply (for dry gangrene) and
removing dead tissues or debridement
(for wet and gas gangrene). With timely
diagnosis and treatment, gangrene
symptoms can be handled effectively
and complete recovery is achieved
without complications.

and anti-inflammatory effects of
Celecoxib while reducing its dose,
thus reducing its toxic side-effects,
including the rate of heart attack and
stroke.
Gene variations linked to type 2
diabetes
A new study has found that certain
variations of the gene HMGA1
are associated with type 2 diabetes
mellitus for individuals of white
European descent.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a
common metabolic disorder that is
associated with major diabetes-related
complications, including retinopathy,
kidney disease and cardiovascular
disease.
Insulin resistance in muscle, liver, and
fat tissue is a major feature of most
patients with type 2 DM.
And it is considered that heredity
is a major contributor to the insulin
resistance of type 2 DM, according to
the study.
Antonio Brunetti of the University
of Catanzaro, Italy and colleagues
conducted a study to examine the
association of HMGA1 gene variants
with type 2 DM.
The study included patients with type
2 DM and controls from 3 populations
of white European ancestry in three
countries Italy, U.S. and France.
Exercising for just 30 minutes daily
‘cuts risk of bowel cancer’
A new research has found that exercising
for just half an hour a day can slash the
risk of developing bowel cancer.
It has long been known that people with
an active lifestyle reduce their risk of
developing the disease, reports the Daily
Express.
Now scientists from the Washington
University School of Medicine have
shown that those who keep fit are up to
three times less likely to develop large

the upper arm which is normally used for

blood flow directly to the heart, it is

cardiovascular health, according to the
Daily Mail, which quoted the journal.
In a report on the findings, the authors
from a group of research organisations in
Adelaide in Australia said: “This study

Cardwell residents deal with
flooding
Cardwell residents, still recovering from the
damage caused by Cyclone Yasi in February,
are now dealing with flooding.
Residents in the cyclone-affected town of

Gate Bridge, a jury has heard.
Arthur Phillip Freeman, 37, of Hawthorn, has
pleaded not guilty in the Victorian Supreme
Court to murdering his daughter Darcey.
The court has heard that Mr Freeman stopped
his car in an emergency lane high on the
bridge, carried Darcey to the railing and
threw her off in January 2009.

Receivers delve into wife’s $80m
A COURT judgment revealed that the wife
of controversial Indian entrepreneur Pankaj
Oswal owes the tax department $140
million and may have received $80 million
in payments from Burrup Fertilizers, the
company her husband founded.
Allegations of improper payments by Burrup
to Mr Oswal triggered the appointment
by ANZ in December of receivers to the
ammonia producer. ANZ is owed $360
million by Burrup, and another $500 million
by the Oswals’ private interests.
Radhika Oswal had applied to the Victorian
Supreme Court last month to prevent
Burrup’s receivers from accessing the email
account she used on the company’s corporate
mail server on the grounds it had nothing to
do with the company’s business.
The court granted her an injunction until
Friday, when the matter will go back before
the court for pre-trial directions. ‘’An
expedited trial on the question of ownership
of the emails can be accommodated in the
near future,’’ Justice Peter Almond said.

“Jasper not only takes the cake, he takes it
into a corner and eats it by himself,” she

All Mrs. Booker’s babies were delivered
by caesarean, with Jake, 3, weighing
4.79kg and James, 1, 5.19kg.
Jasper experienced initial breathing
troubles and low blood sugar levels, but
now is doing well.
“My other boys are all in proportion now,”
Mrs. Booker said.
“You’d never know they were big babies.
“People have said with all these big boys
you must have had gestational diabetes,
but there hasn’t been anything like that.
“Doctors said a natural birth would have
been difficult with Jasper due to his size,
and because I’d had two other caesareans.”
Husband John, 38, can offer no explanation
for their boys’ birth weights.
“We are just good stock,” Mr Booker said.
Pediatrician Dr Barry Kras said Jasper was
the biggest baby he had seen.
“If she hadn’t had a caesarean it would
have been quite an emergency,” he said.
The average birth weight in Victoria is
3.37kg.
The judgment, a modest victory for Ms
Oswal, came at a cost. It revealed arguments
by Burrup receivers that they need access to
her emails to continue investigating alleged
financial irregularities.
The judgment referred to investigations
by the receivers ‘’which show that the
plaintiff (Radhika Oswal) may have received
payments directly or indirectly from Burrup
exceeding $80 million’’.
The receivers’ legal team argued that the
receivers, and Burrup itself, would ‘’suffer
substantial prejudice’’ if they are prevented
from reviewing information in discharge of
their duties.
More surprising was the revelation that
Ms Oswal, who owns 35 per cent of the
company, had a garnishee notice lodged
against her Burrup stake last month over a
tax debt of approximately $140 million. No
further detail was available.
The Oswals left Australia in December, soon
after the receivers were appointed to Burrup,
and later declared they did not plan to return.
Their jet was confiscated by the
Commonwealth Bank, their half-built $60
million home in Perth is up for sale and their
65 per cent stake in Burrup will soon be up
for sale to pay ANZ’s debts.
Last month Ms Oswal challenged the
receivers’ seizure of her stake in Burrup. That
matter is also to come before the Victorian
Supreme Court.
Judgment showed the Oswals’ current
address is in Dubai. Mr Oswal has interests
in the region.
Meanwhile, NAB has appointed receivers
to one of Mr Oswal’s property companies,
Oswal Developments. The bank holds a
mortgage over properties in Baldivis, south
