The Western Massachusetts Campaign for Legal Aid: 4 Counties 4 Justice

Campaign second annual drive raises much-needed funds for Western
Massachusetts Legal Services (WMLS) and the Massachusetts Justice Project (MJP).
The Campaign helps to ensure that legal aid is there for the poorest members of our
communities.

Kicked off by sending letters and pledge cards to 3,200 lawyers, bar associations,
and law firms, this year’s goal is $75,000 to help the swelling ranks of the
unemployed and people facing foreclosure and bankruptcy in Berkshire, Franklin,
Hampden, and Hampshire counties.

Among the services the legal aid organizations provide are:

• Legal representation for as many of the record numbers of the unemployed

as we can in unemployment benefit appeals;

• Assistance in obtaining food stamps and fuel aid;

 • Protection for the elderly and poor from foreclosure, eviction, and
homelessness;

• Representation for vulnerable families who are victimized by predatory

lenders and landlords;

• Shelter for women and children subject to violence in their homes; and

• Healthcare to children in desperate need of medical attention.
