Teacher guidelines

The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and
consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.
Teachers need to be very familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement
Standard Music 91091. The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes contain
information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting the
standard and assessing students against it.

Context/setting
This assessment activity requires students to perform one piece of music live before
an audience as part of a group. Ideally a group should comprise between three and
seven members.

The calibre and setting of the group should be to the advantage of the student being
assessed.

The student should select music for the performance in consulation with classroom
and instrumental teachers.

All students being assessed in this standard need to demonstrate ensemble skills
and technical and musical demands appropriate to at least a third year of study
through group itinerant lessons. A simple fixed chordal accompaniment on either
guitar or piano will not provide sufficient evidence for this standard.

Ensemble skills consist of the individual performer’s contribution towards cohesion,


balance, intonation, feel, style, and accuracy of the group’s performance.

The performance will be assessed holistically: this means considering the merits and
musicality of the whole performance, rather than placing emphasis on small technical
inaccuracies or minor slip-ups.

The musical heritage of the tangata whenua is recognised as a valid representation


of musical expression. Traditional forms of Māori music may be used for assessment.

Conditions
The performance must take place in a suitable location before an audience, which
may be classroom-, school-, or community-based.

Students who are not being assessed may be part of the group.

Students who are being assessed in a group setting need to be clearly identifiable for
assessment and moderation purposes. Each performer must play a separate or
uniquely identifiable part.

An audio-visual recording is required for assessment and moderation purposes.

Resource requirements
Students need to have access to instrument/s, sheet music, music stands, a suitable
performance location, an audience, and audio-visual recording equipment.

Student instructions

Introduction
In this activity, you will present a performance of music as a member of a group in
front of an audience.

Task
The performance will consist of one piece of music to demonstrate your ensemble
skills. Your performance will be completed by the date given to you by your teacher.

Your contribution to the group performance must be clearly heard and seen, and you
must be the only person playing your part. Ideally a group will have between three
and seven players.

You should aim to present a musically satisfying performance.

Your performance should demonstrate evidence of ensemble awareness (that is,


your ability to contribute to the cohesion, balance, intonation, feel, style, and
accuracy of the group’s performance).

If your performance includes improvisation, this will be assessed according to its


appropriateness to the musical style.

Your performance must take place in a suitable location.

Your performance will be judged holistically. This means the assessor will consider
the merits and musicality of your whole performance rather than placing too much
emphasis on small inaccuracies or minor slip-ups that do not affect the fluency of
your performance.

Your teacher will give you guidance on the type, length, and complexity of the piece
you will perform. You can start preparing the music for performance after your
teacher confirms that it is appropriate for assessment for this standard.

You should provide your teacher with a copy of the music for your assessment, as
either a notated score or an audio recording, so your assessor can monitor accuracy.

Your performance will be recorded for moderation and evaluation purposes.
