Hanok, or traditional Korean houses, are a place where you can forget
all of the stresses of the modern world. Designed to withstand the
forces of the Korean climate, hanok are built with natural elements
such as trees, soil, stone and paper. The house offers visitors a chance
to learn about Korean history and culture while reconnecting with

Every project he planned had already been completed by
someone else using better materials on a larger scale. With his
doubts mounting, Kwon thought of quitting painting. So he
put down his brush and picked up a camera. For a year, Kwon
traveled with his camera looking for ways he could transform
his art into something that was both meaningful and original.
When the year was up, Kwon decided to turn his career in a
completely new direction.
“I started thinking about ‘time,’” Kwon says. “When others
were working in horizontal compositions, I started working in
vertical compositions. I walked away from the high-tech era
and chose to go toward more primitive themes. I realized that
for art, one must research and investigate one’s whole lifetime
to dig deep and find meaning. I wasn’t interested in the high-
tech, nor did I have the ability to follow such methods.”
There was another benefit to Kwon’s new path. As a poor
student studying abroad, high-tech projects were out of his
budget. He confesses that during that period, “I could not
work on projects that used quality materials.” The restrictions
of Kwon’s approach opened new doors to him and helped
shape the primitive artworks he is so well known for today.

A P-3C patrol plane owned by the
United States Navy flying above the Samho
Jewelry passed on intelligence to Korean
rescuers that there were three people
on the hijacked ship’s stern, four on its
bridge and four others on the middle deck.
The Samho Jewelry was blocked on both
sides during the operation by the South
Korean destroyer Choi Young and a 394-
ton Omani naval destroyer. When the US
helicopter passed on the intelligence about
the pirates’ locations, Choi Young was
2.7 nautical miles away from the Samho
Jewelry, while the Omani destroyer was 4.7
nautical miles from the hijacked vessel.
As the Cheonghae soldiers forced the
pirates to surrender, they played a pre-
recorded message in the Somali language
warning the pirates to give up their
weapons if they wanted to live. A Dutch
naval destroyer had helped the Korean
Navy record that warning. Once the ship
was recovered, an SH-60 helicopter from
the US Navy helped to quickly transport
Seok Hae-kyun, the wounded captain of
the Samho Jewelry, to a hospital in Oman.

ary to fight piracy Over the last two
decades, Somali pirates have evolved
from rough-and-tumble groups trying to
make a living to more sophisticated units
that bring in hired guns to terrorize ships.
Only through international cooperation
can nations hope to eradicate this violent
industry. Pirates have been having a field
day attacking foreign commercial vessels
that sail to and from Saudi Arabia and
other oil exporting countries in the region.
Foreign vessels often carry huge
amounts of crude oil and have a large
crew. With so much oil and so many human
lives at stake, ship owners have little choice
but to shell out large ransoms. The ransoms
have allowed pirates to institutionalize
their industry.

Falconry Inscribed in 2010 on UNESCO’s
Representative List of the Intangible Heritage
of Humanity, Falconry is the traditional
activity of taking quarry by means of trained
birds of prey. It has been practiced for
4,000 years and in 60 countries. In Korea,
a few falconers, including Park Yong-soon
(pictured on this page), have helped keep
this ancient human heritage alive.
