1 GENERAL
1.1. Type of Transcelver
‘The FM-5S handheld vansceive is availabe in 3 versions as follows;
1) Intemational Version:
Internatonal channels, Dual Watch, Manual scan
2) US. Version
Iniecnatonal channels, US. channels, Auto scan, Manual scan,
‘Woathar channls, Dual Watch
3) Special Verso:
Function of international or U.S. version plus ited private channels

1.2 Mode
“The FM-55 is provided withthe following channel modes:
1) Normal Channel Mode
‘Any authorized channel can be selected by hiting the channo!
‘number keys or manual scan key.
2) Memory Channel Mode
‘Any channel stored in the memory adcress can be selected by
‘manual scan.
3) Weather Channel Mode ()
‘Any channel progeammed in the weather channel address can be
selected by manual scan.
44) Private Channel Mode ()
‘Any channel programmed inthe private channe! address can be
selected by manual scan,
41.3. Charging the Battery Pack
‘When you frst operate afer purchace ofthis radio set, recharge the
battory pack through a wall charger suppliod as standard or through @
‘Quick charger whichis optional avaiable. Normal charging tie is about
15 hours withthe wall chargor BO-500, 60-90 minutos with tne quick
charger, BC-501 or BC-503,
1.4 Auto Sean (*)
‘Auto scan is activated by pressing [SHIFTI[A] and the receiver
‘automatcally scans chanoels upward in each channel mode. In the
rormal channel mode the channel is automatically abvanced upward
every 0.2 seconds n the memory channel mode ({SHIFTJ[MRD, only the
stored channels are scanned; in the weather () or private) modes, only
the woather cr private channels are scanned, respectively. When the
‘signal is received (squeich opened), scan siops, In 2 seconds after the
‘signal is gone (squelch closed), scan auiomatcaly restarts. Auto scan is
‘ceased by pressing [SHIFTI[A] again or PTT switc
NOTE: When two keys are pressed in succession, the interval should be
within 2 seconds. Otherwise the radio will revert 10 the earier
Sas.
1.5 Manual Scan
‘You can step up or down the channels by pressing [A] or [7] keys. tt
yeu keep the kay pressed, the channel wil step Up or down quicky.
2 CHANNEL SELECTION
2A. Ordinary Channel
Desired chanael is selected by pressing 2 numeral keys in succession.
For example: to select CH, press [O]I6], and to select CH88, press
(eye).
22 Channel 16 (International Distress and Call)
(CH16 may bo entered either by pressing (1]16] Keys or [16] key. You
‘Should nat use this channel for normal wale other than contact to 8
‘coastal staton or in emergency conciton. Care should be taken 12
prevent inadvertent selection of Channel 16.
NOTE1:The 2nd digit shoul be entored within 2 seconds ate the 1st
‘alt isentored; otherwise the 1st gt entered flashes for another
2 seconds and then the FM-S5 reverts tothe original channel.
NOTE2: When unprogrammed channels (CH28, CH70, CH75, otc.) are
‘selecte, the ented number flashes ie 2 seconds and then the
receiver reverts tothe orginal channel
NOTES: The FM-55 maintains receiving conditon on the orginal channel
untl the erty of new channel is completed
NOTES:Channel selection cannot be made during transmission

It your radio is US. version, you can switch the FM-SS to International
channels oF U.S.A. channels by pressing [+ ] key. "INT" or "USA" is
Indicated on the LCD display accordingly. In the Intemational version,
[Tey tuns off or on the key acton boop.

22 Rotum to Normal Channel Mode
To etn to normal channol modo, press either [16] key o SHIFT «1
feys. CH6 wi bo solcted. Then elect another channe by pressing
the conesponding keys.
4 MEMORY CHANNEL
4.41 Write Memory Channel
4.1.41 Up to 10 most-ften used channels can be stored in memory
‘acdresses for quick selecton, Press [SHIFTIIMR], and tho
M55 is set fo Memory Write mode. "MW", "M1" and the
‘contents (CH number ofthe memexy address 1 ae displayed on
‘the LCD. ("--" wil be displayed instead of channel number wien
no channel is stored.)4.1.2 Enter the desired CH number, 35 described in 2.1 and 2.2. To
store a weather channel (), press [SHIFT]I * ], and "b-" will Be
‘splayed. Wihin 2 seconds entor the weather channel number 1,
2,"",9.0r0. "WX" and the entorad weather channel address wil
be displayed and entry is fished. To store @ private channel (),
which must be proprogrammod, ross [SHIFT]IZ] and "A-* wll
be displayed. Enter the private channel number, To return to
‘normal channel mode, press [18].
4.1. Press [A] or [7] untl the desied memory address is accessed.
4.1.4 10 channels max can bo stored in memory addresses 1, 2, 9
and 0.
4.1.8 To escape trom memay write mode, press [SHIFTIIMR] and the
‘ago wil be ready for operation onthe channel last memorized on
‘memory read mode. For normal channel mode, press [16] then
‘ontor a desired channel number.
42 Read Memory
4.2.1. Pross [MR], and tho logend "M1" with the contents of memory
_adaress 1 wll be indicated on the LCD display.
NOTE: If 90 channel is stored in the memory address 1, te rad skins
to an addross where a channel has been specified.
4.2.2 Pross [A\] oF [7] until the desired channel is reached.
4.2. To escape from memary read made, press 16] and CHI6 is.
recalled on normal channel mode.
5 DUAL WATCH
6.1. Funetion
ual watch facitates monitoring CH16 once @ second while listening to
the selected channel, When the signal is received on CH16, the receiver
locks on CH16. In 5 seconds aftr the signal is gone the lock is releesed,
‘einitating the dual watch.
52 Other Channel
‘Sat the desied channel in normal channel mode, memory channel made,
‘weather channel mode () or private channel mode ().
8.3 Dual Watch
Press (SHIFT](16), and dual watch is engaged. "DW" and the receiving
channel is dsplayed.
8.4 Coase of Dual Watch
Press [SHIFTII16] again or PTT switch, and the other channel paired
with CH16 wil be selected.
6 TRANSMISSION
Talk o the microphone provided at the leftand side ofthe bottom of the
speaker gi, while Keeping the PTT switch pressed. When an extemal
‘speakerimicrophone is connected, the PTT switch, microphone and
‘speaker on the main unt are disabled and only those on the speaker!
‘microphone are operative,
7 KEYLOCK
Press [SHIFT}{O], and all keys except [SHIFT] key are disables to avoid
inadvertent key operation. "LOCK" is displayed on the LCD. Press
ISHIFT][O} again to release keylock
8 BEEP ON/OFF
Key operation is confirmed with beep sound. In the International version,
‘the beap sound can be disabled or enabled by pressing [+]. For tho
FM-S5 of U.S. version, beep sound is always engaged. Sound levels
‘contaleg wth the VOLUME conto.
9 PRIVATE CHANNEL MODE (')(Special version
only)
9.1 Private Mode
ross {SHIFTIIVI, and private CH js recalled. "PRV" and address "1"
‘are displayed. Press|] or [V7] nti the desied private channel is
reached.
9.2 Return to Normal Channel Mode
To return to normal channel mode, press either [16] key or [SHIFTHIV]
keys, CHT wil be seloctod.
NOTE: Scandinavian Fish Boat changes and Ploasure Craft channols
fre handled as PRIVATE CHANNEL.
10 SQUELCH CONTROL
‘Squeich mutes audio output while the radio is receiving no signal. Rotate
the squelch control clockwise untl the noise is muted. Be caretu: 100
high a setting will decrease the senstvty and you miss desired signals.
11. VOLUME CONTROL
‘Adjusts the audio level. Rotate the volume contol to increase aucio level
‘This is combined wih the power-off switch. When notin use, never fil
to completoly tun off to save battry
12 ILLUMINATION OF LCD DISPLAY
“The LOD display is iluminated for nightie operation by pressing the
‘LOD LIGHT switch ocatod above the PTT button.
13 LED INDICATOR

15 HOW TO CHARGE
Battery Charger (wall charger) BC-500,
‘Set 110/220V select switch at 110V postion for AC input of 100-1200,
‘Fat 220V poston for AC input of 220-240V. Connect the DC plug to
the jack on the battery pack. Charging bme is about 1S hours. You can
‘charge the battery pack alone or complete with the main unit.
(Transceiver cicuity is eectcaly cisconnected trom the battry pack
{and not usable when the charger plug is inserted)
CAUTION: It the charger becomes excessively hot, remove it rom the
‘mains supply end consut wth @ dealer. The BC-500 is a
charger exclssve for FURUNO handhels vansceiver

Set 110/220V select switch at 110V poston for AC input of 100-120V,
(or at 220V pasion for AC input of 220-240V. Drop the main unit wth
the batlory pack into the slat of BC-50% oF into any sot of BC-503
Full charge wil be attained in 60-80 minutes. The charger wil
‘automatcaly tun to Wickle charge ater the quick charge.
CCAUTIONT: Shock or ambient temperature ouside 10-80°C wil
‘change status from "quick” to “rickle” before ‘ul chargo is
reached. Put off power and reinsert he radios. Avoid use
{ata room temperature above 40°C or below 10°C.
‘CAUTION2: For security purpose, do not leave the FM-SS or its battery
pack inthe charger more then necessary.
NOTE: Beware of AC supply. Transceiver is usable during charging with
2 tabletop charger. If TRICKLE or QUICK lamp isnot ignag, tho
Charging contacts on the Botiom of the battery pack ave notin
Contact withthe charger. Adlust the posttorng ofthe pack back
