INTRODUCTION

In the winter of 1895 two gentlemen, Laurin, a car


mechanic, and Klement, a bookseller, began to
manufacture bicycles, which they named Slavia. By
1899, Laurin and Klement Company's fame began to
spread as they manufactured motorcycles, which
brought numerous successes in international
contests.
Today, this company is known as Skoda Auto and is
renowned for its well-engineered cars. In 1989 in the
new free market environment, Skoda Auto, which till
then had been a Czech government-owned company,
started looking for a strong foreign partner in order to
survive in the extremely competitive global market.
In December 1990, the German Volkswagen group
decided to take over Skoda Auto. On 16 April 1991,
the Skoda Automobilova AS started its activity as the
fourth branch of the VW group, together with VW,
Audi and Seat.
History of skoda

Skoda Auto is a part of the international Volkswagen


Group, one of the premium automobile manufacturers
in Europe. Skoda entered the Indian market in
November 16, 2001. The company invested in a plant
at Shendra, outskirts of Aurangabad, the only
manufacturing facility of the company outside Europe.
The brand Skoda Auto is known for its stylish looks,
well built exterior.
Till date Skoda Auto has introduced twelve luxury
models in the Indian market including Skoda Superb
and Skoda Laura. In 2005, the company achieved
more than 25% market in the luxury segment.
In 2006, Skoda Auto in India received awards like
‘Most Technologically Advanced Car’ for Skoda Laura
and ‘Best Variant’ for Skoda Superb Turbo Diesel
from CNBC-TV18 AUTOCAR AUTO. It also received
‘Executive Car of the Year’ award from NDTV
PROFIT CAR INDIA and ‘Automotive Technology of
the Year’ award from OVERDRIVE, both for Skoda
Laura. As of April 2009, it has sold over 61,000 units
since operations began in November 2001.

Manufacturing facilities

Škoda Auto India used just one plant to


manufacture its cars, the Aurangabad plant, located in
Shendra, near Aurangabad , in the state of
Maharashtra. All vehicles produced are from semi-
knock down (SKD) kits. In May 2009, Škoda Auto
India will begin operations at a Volkswagen
Passenger Cars-owned Pune plant in Chakan. The
plant will be shared: Škoda Auto India will use the
plant to assemble the Fabia, whereas Volkswagen
India will use the plant to assemble the
Polo, beginning in 2001. The plant has a capacity of
110,000 cars per year

Skoda Auto India has a network of 65 dealerships


across the country and has sold over 80,000 units
since November 2001.
In India, Škoda parts are not sold in the open market,
and are only available from Škoda Auto India

Objective of the visit

The main objective of industrial visit is to know


about the management being practiced in the skoda
auto, how the people at Skoda auto manage
their operations and how the resources are
managed. To know about the Supply system and
the how the demand is met. To know about
whether the concepts, which are being taught in
various business schools, are applied in the real
sense or not.

Observation and analysis


Skoda auto has its value system properly established and due
to this it is able to maintain its image in the mind of people.
People working at Skoda auto are very dedicated towards
their work and they feel Skoda auto as their home and
organizational goals as personal ones. The people at Skoda
auto are adequately remunerated,
besides all this Skoda auto provides whole lot of recreational
and other facilities to its people, and
hence they are very happy working there.Reputation of the
Skoda auto brand is its main strength i.e. the impression in
the minds of its customers. It has been continuously winning
awards for the past 8 years.Also, its main product i.e. octavia
is a big hit in the market and is the major strength of the
company.It takes a lot of time to introduce new products,
because any new innovation requires 18 – 24 months to be
approved from skoda auto,europe, which is a major
disadvantage in this competitive world.
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

Visit to Skoda auto was an amazing visit where the


management functions were being practised and it
was a great experience going there.
We can conclude that since Skoda auto has a good
image attached to it, thus it should try and
maintain its image, because in today`s time the
people and more brand conscious and look for
value for their money and hence with such a great
brand name established for them, it is a real
advantage to them and with this they can reach to
new heights.
Skoda has a well known brand name.
Attitudes are changing and it is time for a rethink of the
marketing strategy.
Put an end to the jokes and market its merits.
The products has gone from ‘the brand from hell to one
of a brand’
