ABSTRACT
Smart city just like any other city in India, is facing same problems of exponential population
growth, traffic congestion, water logging, worn-down roads, high pollution rate. City lies in sub-
tropical climate zone hence faces heavy rainfall which causes water logging in low lying areas .
This water logging causes deterioration of roads and results in further addition to traffic
problems.

As the city is facing exponential population growth, its population has tripled in the last 30 yrs.
Because of exponential population growth, increased city size and high economic growth ,as
well as erratic settlement of population, private ownership of vehicle has increased fifteen
fold. Due to increasing number of vehicles, lots of problems have added themselves in the list.
Traffic congestion and pollution have become common characteristics of the city. According to
a survey, 4 lakh liters of fossil fuel get’s wasted everyday due to idling of vehicles at the
congestion points. On comparing these figures with the 1996 fuel pricing, everyday losses come
out to be about Rupees 82 lakhs per day and 2,99,30,00,000 crores annually. But observing
these figures at a larger scale, we will see that it will come out to Rupees 2,99,30,00,000 crores
+ pollution + health hazard + nature destruction.

Hence any investment that will be able to reimburse such losses, no matter how much it
cost’s, will be able to justify its cost incurred.

Justification
Even if the costs incurred are not recovered for a few years our moral obligations to our country and
the environment demand that we carry on with the project because the benefits of these projects are
not just financial but also environmental and are to be reaped by many onwards generations to come.
A clean and green environment will result in better living and health conditions which cannot be
denoted on a balance sheet in profit and loss terms. But keeping aside all these obligations and
hurdles the project seems to be using a meager amount of resources which are also renewable in
place of fossil fuels which as well as degrading the environment and health of the citizens also add to
the expenditure of public money.

Solution
Travelling is a common human practice. They need a means of transport to travel from one place to
another. No matter, whether that transport is a public transport or private transport, what matter’s is
the peace of mind with which one can use them. In present day scenario, public transport is not so user
friendly because they do not cater to specific need. They ferry on predefined routes which sometimes
create more problems instead of reducing them due to inaccessibility. So this inaccessibility encourages
use of private transport instead of public transport which result in the above mentioned problems.

In our Smart City, the city is already facing such problems , we have to provide them a public transport
that will provide better accessibility and reduced cumbersomeness with higher degree of safety and
luxury at reasonable cost so that they will get attracted towards it and start using public transport
rather than their private transport.

Smart City Rapid Public Transport System

Overview

Smart City Rapid Public Transport System (SCRPT) will provide a complete solution to our
problems. In this, we will provide an end to end solution to the commuters. This system will
pick you from your home and drop you at your destination without any inconvenience .this
system comprises of automatic cars running over existing road network and fast moving intra
city trains using rail network. Both of them will work together in close coordination and form
SCRPT.

Automatic cars will be facilitated with GPS, sensors and would be operated by central super
computer. They will have a sitting capacity of 4 to 6 persons with enough luggage space. They
will have facilities like A/C , Wi-Fi , Phone , GPS and entertainment screen for the users. These
cars will run over electricity provided by batteries that will have been installed in them hence
these cars will produce no pollution and will provide a comfortable ,safe and better means of
transport than any private vehicle with a feel of ‘GREEN’ and at much cheaper rate. These cars
will run at a maximum speed of 45 KM/hrs. in a separate lane.

Automatic fast moving trains will run over an existing but upgraded and advanced railway
track controlled by central super computer and guided by GPS system. These trains will run at a
speed of 100 km/hrs. or more at ground, underground and elevated section covering long
distances.

Working

When you will make a request for a ‘autocab’ (automatic PRT cars), your request will be sent
to a central control command (3C’s). CCC than will search for the nearest free autocab and will
direct it towards you. When it will come to you, you will select the destination and command
center will tell you, your options depending upon the distance between the two points. You will
choose your option and 3C’s will select the shortest available path that is from congestion. You
will choose to go and you will get transported to your destination.

Eg.You need to go from ‘A’ to ‘B’ you will make a request to 3C’s and it will send you an
‘autocab’. You get in the autocab and choose ‘B’ as your destination. 3c’s will locate the ‘B’ and
will show you your option available. Your option will be o two types depending upon the
distance.
Case 1> you can go by autocab

Case2> you can travel by autocab and Smart Rail

If you will choose case i

CASE i

If you will choose case 1, than 3C’s will select a shortest available path free from congestion and
will show it to you. You will give ‘go’ command and then it will start moving and you will
get transported.

CASE ii

If you will choose case ii, than 3c’s will locate the nearest smart rail station and earliest smart rail
available and show it to you with duration of travel. Than you will give ‘go’ command and you will get
transported to nearest smart rail station from their , you will pick your smart rail. When you will reach
your final smart rail station, a autocab will be there, waiting for you to take you to your final destination.

Benefits:
1. Use is cheaper than private vehicle
2. Green way of transportation
3. Accuracy
4. Congestion free movement
5. It will generate employment
6. Conservation of fossil fuel
7. Minimum fatalities

Financial Setup
The financial setup for this project may have very high initial expenses but the running costs and
the maintenance bill would be almost negligible due to long life of all the components and the least
amount of wear and tear that would take place in the systems working.

The pods would cost around rupees 7 to 8 lakhs as per the needs of various individuals and at later
phase many tiers in pods can be introduced. The pods would have the capability to charge from solar
heat as well as many technology’s like brake regeneration technology and movement generation
technology which would help us to reduce the charging time and result in more efficiency and working
time for pods.Revenue can also be generated by advertisements and ticketing.

Steps for implementation

For implementation of this project we will need to take the following steps.

1. Up gradation of existing road network and rail network

To make sure that during the construction and implementation of smart city rapid public
transport system, traffic condition of the city will remain in good shape, we will upgrade
roadsystem in such a way that it will while supporting present day traffic it will support future
demands of SCRPT system.

2. Installation of intelligent central command center(3C)

Central command system comprises of human mind and super computers working together
for the efficient working of road network , rail network , autocab’s and smart rail system. this
system will also control traffic movement at the intersection and will monitor whole city with
help of cameras and sensors for safety and smooth working of SCRPT system.

3. Introduction of SCRPT
It is the introduction of AUTOCABs and SMART RAILs for public use. When road network and
rail network will get upgraded and 3Cwill get installed than it the time for the introduction of
SCRPT will come.

4. Encouragement to use SCRPT

When whole system will be at its place and commuters will start using it then time will come
for the publicity and encouragement of users. We can provide incentives, subsidies to the
users who are using SCRPT instead of their own private vehicle to encourage them and others
also for helping us in reducing pollution level.

5. Maintenance ,Monitoring and up gradation

When everything will be at its place, large no of commuters are using SCRPT and new one also
willing to use it, now our job of maintenance and monitoring will start for smooth ,safer and
smart working of the system. Apart from it, time to time up gradation will be required to keep
the system up to date.

Conclusion
Smart city as the name suggest will represent a city of future with no traffic problems
,smooth road and rail network ,no pollution ,no traffic jams and that is what ‘Smart city Rapid
Public Transport System’ is providing to it. Initial investment may be high but not more than
what is at stake i.e. human life, environment,
