From SCA’s Green Jobs Curriculum Binder 2010

Curriculum Goals
1. Participants will learn and practice skills needed to enter the green workforce
and serve as effective team members and leaders.

2. Participants will develop a conservation ethic by building an understanding of


environmental issues and contributing societal factors.

3. Participants will become aware of post-secondary opportunities in sustainable


fields such as community development, education, and employment.

Curriculum Objectives
There are intended to be two layers of objectives for each individual program. The
set listed below was identified by the GJRC working group as universal objectives for
SCA Community Conservation Crews. In addition to this, it is understood that other
objectives will be utilized by regional staff based on local priorities, skills, and
specific program requirements. Those local priorities are not included in this
compilation.

Goal 1: Work-Readiness
Participants will gain or improve leadership skills (abilities related to motivating
themselves and others, team building, group dynamics and development,
facilitation, and group conflict resolution).
Participants will gain or improve social skills, including interpersonal
communication, active listening, personal conflict resolution, constructive feedback
exchange, teamwork, and problem solving proficiencies.
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of workplace etiquette including
appropriate attitude, conversation, dress, and punctuality.
Participants will develop sensitivity to and appreciation for ethnic diversity and
other differences within and between cultures.
Participants will understand how to manage a personal budget, understand the
deductions on their check, how to reclaim them, and be introduced to positive
community banking options

Goal 2: Eco-Literacy
Participants will be able to explain the concept of conservation and how it is
relevant to an (urban) ecosystem.
Participants will understand the principles of environmental justice and their
capacity to create social change.
Participants will be able to gain a general understanding of the food systems around
them, have exposure to local, community-controlled food systems, and be
encouraged to bring healthy lunches and snacks on program days
Participants will be able to distinguish renewable/non-renewable resources and link
that with a framework of consumption
Participants will be able to articulate the value of access to public green space and
the benefits of participation in outdoor recreation.

Goal 3: Green Career Pathways


Participants will be able to communicate the definition of a green job.
Participants will be able to describe 3 green careers or industries, give examples of
specific jobs related to each, and interact with professionals in their respective
fields.
Participants will be exposed to the continuum of other SCA opportunities
