Drummer Paul DeLong of Local 149 (Toronto, ON) has been feeling the jazz rhythm for
more than 40 years
A savvy full-time musician, DeLong is
booked year-round. When he’s not doing
live performances or playing at wedding
parties, he leads a pop/fusion Steely Dan
cover band at Toronto’s Humber College,
where he has taught for more than 20 years.
DeLong also performs live in television
shows, such as the 2010 ceremony celebrat-
ing the induction of singer/songwriter
David Clayton-Thomas of Local 149 into
the Canadian Walk of Fame.
DeLong cautions that musicians shouldn’t
put all their eggs in one basket. “If they play
in one band, then that band folds, they’re in
trouble,” he explains. “If you play various
styles, you’ll make a living.”
Demonstrating his own flexibility, DeLong
has spent much of the last decade working
in the world of musical theater, perform-
ing live for more than 450 shows of the
Toronto-based production of The Lion King
(1999-2004), as first chair for the Canadian
production of Hairspray (2004), and on
tour in the US and Canada with the casts of
The Who’s Tommy (2008) and Rent (2009).
DeLong also plays for television jingles,
including the new CBC Hockey Night in
Canada theme, recorded in 2008.
This summer, DeLong attended the 15th
annual KoSA International Percussion
Workshop, Camp, and Festival in Castle-
ton, Vermont, where he taught drums and
demonstrated his improvisational abilities.
“I like the immediacy and spontaneity
of improvising on stage, you don’t know
what’s going to happen,” DeLong says. “It’s
scary but exciting at the same time.”
DeLong has played all across Canada and
the US, but he says that his most thrill-
ing live performances were the 1986 New
Year’s Eve act with the Kim Mitchell Band
at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens (the same
stage where he saw Jimi Hendrix in 1969)
and performing with The Code at Montreal
Drumfest in 2003.
Performing at the 2003 Drumfest was
particularly rewarding as he had missed an
opportunity to play Drumfest the previous
year because of a broken wrist. The accident
kept him from playing properly for six
weeks. Once healed, DeLong had a new ap-
preciation for the importance of drumming
in his life. “It was a lot more meaningful
when I got to come back and play with two
hands, instead of one,” he says.
“I would like to keep doing what I’m do-
ing and enjoying the variety of music that
I seem to be able to play and that seems to
come my way,” he concludes.
