Translation
[031:016 Oh my son! If it be anything equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed,
and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth.
Verily, Allah is Subtle in bringing out that grain, Well-Aware of its place]

Exegesis
This holy verse is important for the humanity. In order to give guidance and training his
son he is addressing his son Ya bunayya (Oh my son), don’t stand anybody else parallel
to Allah. There is a message that if the humanity needs to have good morals, mankind
also needs to have perfect beliefs in connection with the religious matter. The training
what we give to our children tawheed is very important. And one portion of the training
is this that we should tell our children that they should not stand anybody else parallel to
Allah. The holy Quran is advising us that always we should train our children with
humble language. We should impart the training of Din, manners, tawheed, and the

moves of human sittings and speaking. Morals and ethics are important to teach the
children.
In the holy Quran we have been advised vehemently not to do shirk. Correction of belief.
Character of morals both are important. Shirk is zulme-e-azeem, and great evil, Allah
hates it. The people who do shirk deserve to be given torments of hellish firs. Allah
would squeeze the sustenance of the people in this world and in hereafter there would be
great punishment in hell. Apart from the shirk Allah also guided not to disobey our
parents though they invite us to do shirk, but we don’t have to leave them alone. Also we
have been told to render our thanks to Allah and parents. And when a woman carries
fetus in her womb, she should avoid doing such kinds of shirk activities, the effect may
go the baby.
It is by the reference of Jafar as-Sadiq 743-765 that a man came to him and told that
when he would step ahead, he would come back. It used to happen with him for doing a
dirty work. Jafar as-Sadiq (AS) replied “ if it also had been of your mother,
would you have done it?” He did not understand that what it meant. He said to let him
know that what was it. It was explained to him that when he was in the womb of his
mother, she was stepping towards some sin type of work. So she was two minded to
commit sin or not. Then she shook idea out of her mind and did not commit sin. If she
had done it, he also would have done it. So we got the lesson that from the first moment
when she conceives to the moment when she gives birth to her baby, she is responsible to
train her baby for noble deeds. And when baby comes into the lap then responsibility
becomes double and more dutiful. It is the nature of human to have the inborn chip of
tawheed in their DNA structure, that’s why when someone sinks, he remembers Allah.
Why? When a baby comes in this mortal world, he carries the nature of tawheed. It is
the parents who put them on the evil way of illogical beliefs. May Allah protect our
children! Luqman and Imam guided their children to keep their hearts free from the dust
of shirk because it is zulm. The most hatred aspect of the humanity Allah has declared it.
So the concepts of shirk and tawheed is pre-Islamic. It is a blessing of Allah on child to
equip him with the concept of tawheed. So when blessing is granted then thanks become
wajib (religiously obligatory) on the person who receives it. So a mother keeps a baby
for nine months in her belly, she bears labour pangs and other physical hardships, and
when she brings forth then for two years she feeds the baby on her milk. So children
should express their gratitude to their parents especially mother, and Allah for bringing
them into the world. This in wonderful manner Allah is telling us. There is complete
lesson of humanity in it. Without thanks and being grateful the world would have
become stone and rocks – without emotions and help seeking spirits.
But on the other hand Allah is also warning us to be careful if our parents urge us to do
shirk and stand some other person parallel to Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala. So if the
parents invite our attention to the shirk type of belief, we must use our intellect to
recognize shrik, and seek the right path of the light of the holy Quran. We only have to

obey our parents with obedient stance in the worldly affairs but not in the form going to
the path of shirk.
It is the responsible duty of the parents to guide and teach children on the right of path of
Allah, to equip them with the right notions of the Quranic beliefs, to tell them about the
Ahlul Bayt, to let them know about the holy imams. So the parents by themselves should
be qualified in these regards and they should have right knowledge of Din-e-Elahi. The
practical exhibition of their life should be practically demonstrated with the Usool-e-Din.
This would be a role model for the children to learn Islam and true manners of Quran.
The children follow the footprints of the parents. We have been told that whatever the
circumstances may take place with us and with our parents, we have to deal and treat
them with extreme humble attitude. Though they are mushrik or kafirs in their views or
demonstrations. We have to be pious and kind to them. We should render our thanks to
them. We should not remain ahead of their paces. Only we don’t have to follow their
nefarious ideas of evil thoughts against Islam. Islam is giving highest possible respect
and protocol to the parents. Subhan Allah (all glory to Allah).
We do have high examples of the imams and masoomeen. In no portion of their holy
brains the idea of shirk took place. How could it be? Their characters were holy, their
minds were holy, their affairs were holy, their parents were holy, their teachings were
holy, their thoughts were holy, their places were holy, their sights were holy, their race
was holy, and their grace was holy. We are the followers of them.
And Imam Ali (AS) is a noble personality after Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) in the universe. Karam Allah Wajho – whose face never bowed before parallel to
Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala. Before and after his birth he was the ibadat guzzar of Allah.
Congenitally he was a Muslim. His DNA was given the blueprint of Islam. His creation
was meant for the Islam. It was only the visible exhibition for embracing Islam for
setting some kind of example for others. Otherwise he was born with the holiest possible
stuff of the human nature. So we should follow the footprints of them whose blueprint of
DNA was formulated somewhere else in the skies.
Be pious to your father, but don’t do shirk. Allah knows our every move and we have to
return to His Law of Requital. We would be told what we did in the mortal world. Allah
says it. It means our every action is being requited for. There is a rule of accountability.
There is a big and divine purpose for the Law of Requital so that there should remain and
prevail justice on the earth. And the caravan of humanity may proceed to the destination
where there is construction and further noble goals to achieve.
Luqman tells his son that what the actions he did in the mortal world to the size of even
mustard seed and lies in the core of a rock, or is hidden in the labyrinthine ways of the
earth or skies, Allah would show it to him. This is the Law of Requital – Qanoon-e-
Makafaat-e-Amel. It means that the system of Allah is very perfect in bringing our
actions with visible results on the Day of Judgment. That is the system of Allah not some
kind of human system which may have lacunas. Very important lesson Luqman is giving
to his son. Actually this is a guidance and teaching and advise to all mankind to maintain
their humanity on the base of this notion, that our every move and thought be it

microscopic in its entity, is known to Allah. And this would be shown to us. Our action
would be shown in the stance in which we did the evils in this world. So we are being
told that Allah is watching us. The bottom line is “Be careful in your taste and waste.”
Allah would have no excuse on our part. Allah sent prophets, messengers, immams, and
other pious people in order to let us know what is the lightful path of Allah. It is we
either to be the best or the worst. That’s why the concept of Day of Judgment has been
given, so that we may maintain the justice in the world and in our daily affairs of life.
Humanity may only sustain on the base of pure justice. Our every move is being
monitored and stored by the system of Allah – Qanoon-e-Makafaat-e-Amel – the Law of
Requital. Because Allah has told us and given us the holy Quran, now we should read it
to appear before Allah on the Day of Judgment. Allah is very kind. But the nature of
human aptitude is not kind. They think to administer zulm with our friends and
colleagues. There are clear instructions in the holy Quran to be humble and cooperative
and kind to others. We should be constructive in our thoughts not destructive in our
practical affairs of life.
Dear readers we also should hunt and trace the Shab-e-Jummah. We should celebrate it
with zeal and zest. So we should be punctual in our timetable that every event should be
done on its right time and moment. For example we may get the bliss of the birthday of
Imam Hassan (AS) when he was born, but after that day, that would just be an attempt to
celebrate it. But the sawaab would be only on the tame and date when this incident had
taken place in the time and space.
Luqman advises his son to establish the system of namaz. Apart from the establishment
of namaz ask people to do pious acts. And stop people from evil and bad things. And be
patient. Hazrat Luqman is advising his son in these words. Further Luqman advises his
son that if you get any hardship or trouble, be patient on it. Because to be patient is one
of the determinations of Allah. Subhan Allah (all glory to Allah). What an advice to his
son! Luqman is saying “Oh my son! Aqim-is-Salat, enjoin on people Al-Maruf and
forbid people from Al-Munkar disbelief in the Oneness of Allah, polytheism of all kinds
and all that is evil and bad, and bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these
are some of the important commandments ordered by Allah with no exemption.
A question comes in mind that in the surah 031:017 (surah Luqman) whose translation
has been written in above lines, there is no mention of zakat? In this regard scholars say
that because by the time of advice to the sons, they do have no wealth, that’s why they
are not asked to pay zakat.
And this humble servant of Din thinks that Luqman is advising his son regarding namaz.
And order for doing pious acts. Avoid evils and sins. So I think that perhaps it was in
the mind Luqman to train his son first for the basic character of morals in accordance
with Din. Do train yourself and your society too.
So dear readers, to learn pious acts and avoid sins is the commandment of Allah. And
namaz is the base of Allah’s system of holy Quran. Masoom was asked that what is the
most noble and pious thing in the world? Imam Ali (AS) replied “the most noble and

pious thing is that is our love”. And and to remove the meanness
against us from your hearts. It is Maruf. And if someone adapted it he is Munkir.

Allah says Allah has made iman

beloved for us in our hearts. That is Hub-e-Ali – the love for Ali. It sits in our heart.
Subhan Allah (all glory to Allah). And Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) says

“ with the mention of Ali, decorate your congregation

– majlis. And where there is adornment to the heart then the congregation also gets the
ornamental adornment.
Jafar as-Sadiq 743-765 said “ that in my ancestors Imam Hassan (AS) told that

Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) told that I was created out of
the noor – light of Allah – our Ahlul Bayt were created

they were all created from my noor- light

the lovers of them were also created out of from the shadow

of their light and every creature of the universe was created out of
Dozagh. These were created out of light. The lovers of them were also created out of the
light. This is the Noor-e-Khudaa. It is the name of iman - the faith.

Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said “ Oh my sustainer love him

(Imam Hassan), also love them who love him. After it Muhammad (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi
wa sallam) said “ be aware who loves Imam Hassan (AS) and the father
(Imam Ali (AS) of both of them (Hassan and Hussain) he would enter
paradise. Because they got the Noor-e-Khuda. And Noor-e-Khuda can not go in fire. So
the jahanam is haram on a moumin.
