Raiders of the Sulu Sea: A Documentary Presentation

Activity: Watch the documentary film Raiders of the Sulu Sea in Youtube through the
link: https://youtu.be/CEtJ1mZdX10. Read likewise Dr. Cesar Adib Majul’s book titled
Muslims in the Philippines: Past, Present and Future Prospects make a timeline of the
Moro Wars.

Timeline of the Moro Wars: (Based on Muslims in the Philippines by Dr. Majul)
1571 - Legaspi led an invasion of Muslim settlements in Manila under Rajah Sulayman.

1578 - Spaniards geared to an expedition south to the Sulu Archipelago, Maguindanao,


and Cotabato.

1591 - Spaniards conducted their military expedition to Maguindanao.

1596 - Establishment of a military garrison in Tampakan.

1597 - The Spaniards abandoned Tampakan and repositioned at La Caldera in


Zamboanga.

1599 - Datu Salikula of Maguindanao and Datu Sirungan of Buayan launched a joint
attack on a major Spanish base in Central Visayas.

1603 - Rajah Buisan delivered a speech calling Leyte Datus to fight the Spaniards.

1605 - A peace treaty was signed by the Spaniards and the Moros.

1608 - The treaty was scrapped after the Spaniards made and invasion in Ternate.

1609 - Another peace treaty was signed after the Spaniards was forced by the
resumption of Moro military raids in Spanish garrisons in Central Visayas.

1628 - The war resumed with the Spaniards and the Sulu Sultanate.

1635 - The Spaniards captured Zamboanga and established a military base.

1637 - The Spaniards captured Lamitan, the seat of the Maguindanao Sultanate.

1638 - The Sulu sultanate moved court to Dungun, Tawi-Tawi after the Spaniards
captured Jolo.

1639 - Sultan Qudarat of Maguindanao re-established his forces and held court at
Pulangi.

1644 - The Spaniards signed a peace treaty and evacuated all forces from Zamboanga
back to Manila, after an offensive by the Sulu Sultanate with the Dutch Navy
bombarding the Spanish garrison in Jolo. Also, the Chinese prepares an attack
in Manila.

1718 - The Spaniards reoccupied Zamboanga and built the Fort Pillar.

1720 - The Sulu sultanate made a new offensive with the Sultanate of Maguindanao
and the Dutch of Batavia, Indonesia.

1726 - A peace treaty was signed in Manila by the Spaniards and the Sulu sultanate.

1727 and 1733 - The Sulu sultanate sent ambassadors to China, and secured support.

1734 - The 1726 Peace treaty was terminated after the Sulu sultanate attempted to
capture Zamboanga and Taytay, Palawan simultaneously.

1735 - The Spaniards responded by invading Jolo and pushing back the Sulu sultanate
to Dungun, Tawi-Tawi for the second time.

1737 - Another peace treaty was signed to stop the war.

1849 - The Spaniards acquired steamboats from the British.

1851 - A Spanish invasion of Sulu was commenced with funding from rich people and
Chinese capitalists after intensified propaganda by the Catholic hierarchy to
justify the war as a holy war.

1876 - The Spanish fleet landed in Jolo.

1878 - The Sulu Sultanate managed to negotiate another treaty to save the people from
further destruction.

1891 and 1895 - Datu Amai Pakpak of the Maranao defended Marawi.

1903 - Tausug warriors with kris and some riffles fought American forces equipped with
modern weapons in Jolo.

1906 - Battle of Bud Dahu where Gen. Leonard Wood the governor of Moro province
ordered an assault of Bud Dahu.

1913 - Battle of Bud Bagsak.

1915 - Signing of the Kiram-Carpenter Agreement and the Sulu Sultanate sovereignty
was taken over by the US government.

1927 - the armed fighting of Tausug fighters against US army at Bud Langkuwasan.
