AviCares recently hosted a community service event at the Brith Sholom House in the Wynnefield Heights section of Philadel-
phia. On Presidents’ Day, residents put together 150 lunches that were then donated to the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County,
a shelter in Upper Darby. Twenty two residents of the Brith Sholom House, all of whom are seniors, were assisted by nine
AviCares volunteers. Earlier in the day, eight volunteers prepared the food that was used in the lunches. AviCares is an organiza-
tion founded by Merion teenager Avi Satlow, 17, dedicated to enabling others to perform community service. Since the early
days of its founding in 2004, the group has provided opportunities for over 350 volunteers who have prepared over 2,000 meals
and made over 8,000 sandwiches for those in need. The Brith Sholom House is a senior residence funded, in part, by the Brith
Sholom Foundation. For information about AviCares, visit www.avicares.org.

Pasolini was a known atheist and Marxist but, as an artist,

who placed a call for dialogue with non-Christian artists.
Following that meeting, he read the Gospels and proclaimed

Students enrich their vocabulary and comprehension, explore the world, and gain confidence!

A ll parents understand the notion that children need

“down time” during the summer. Time off from school
can allow for wonderful learning experiences by way of
vacations, family field trips, and reconnecting with extend-
ed family. This is an important part of childhood.
It is important to consider the need for continued practice
of academic skills because of the challenges children who
learn differently face. A significant amount of time away from
reading, writing and math, results in students using pre-
cious school time in the Fall to get caught up with skills that
they had previously learned, but have forgotten due to lack
of practice, difficulty with memory tasks, and the challenges
of their learning style.
