Marriage binds in conjugal love a man and a woman as husband and wife. As my result, the two original
lovers become three or four, or even more. This gives birth to human family with a domicile called home.

Family
 Most fundamental unit of society
 “a permanent union of a man and a woman living in a perfect community for the purpose of
procreation, educating, and supporting children, and for mutual support and help” (Ignacio: 103)
 The father, mother and children live together under one roof, closely united by the bond of love.

Conjugal Love
 Sanctified through the Church, the parents grow in holiness.
 Their love bears fruit namely, the child, forming a family.

Family as the Foundation of the State

 The state compose of individuals who came from family
 Without the family that provides individuals, the State could not come into existence.
 Necessary to the formation of the State
 Article XV, Section 1 of the Philippine Constitution
 The state recognizes the Filipino family as the foundation of the nation.
 Family Code of the Philippines, 1998: 94
 A family is a basic social institution which public policy cherishes and protects.

Family from the Christian View

 From Christian outlook, human family is modeled after the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and
Joseph.
 It has the mission to see to it that the child is guided towards God
 Formed out of the sacrament of matrimony
 First community of faith, hope and love, a community of Lord’s disciples

Christian Parenting
A. Parenting
 Happens because of love; the conjugal love between husband and wife which bears fruit to the
birth of the child
 The husband becomes a father and the wife becomes a mother
B. Parenthood
 Starts at the pregnancy of the wife
 Is no easy responsibility; it includes industry, patience and sacrifice
C. Parental Love
 Resulted from conjugal love
 “one-way” love
 At its purest is often accompanied by sacrifice
D. Parental Responsibility
 The love of the parents for one another is its foundation
 The husband-wife relationship must be of triangular dimension- the third is of that the Lord.

Disciplining a Child
 Psychologists tells us that even when the parents must discipline the child, the child must be
made to feel that the disciplining is done, not out of a sense of revenge but precisely because he
is loved.
 Loving the child means dying to oneself, for it means loving him even when he does not appear
to be worthy of love.

Filipinos being Family-Centered

 Family is regarded by Filipinos as:
 center of their lives
 primary support
 source of moral strength
 Parents are “crucified” for the pain of separation
 Parents are martyrs to their child
 Parents remain parents to their child
 Success of the child is the success of the parents
