The Holocaust

Bauer, Yehuda, and Keren, Nili. A history of the Holocaust. Rev. ed. United States of America:

Scholastic Library Publishing, 2001. 266-96. Print.

This book outlines the roots of WWII as well as examines the persecution of Jews in Germany. It
was written to help the prevention of such atrocities from happening in the future by providing
detailed information. It helps my research because of the in-depth discussion of events such as
The Final Solution, but more directly it discussed the resistance of the Jewish people. I believe
the information to be accurate as Bauer has been referred to as a leading authority on the
Holocaust. The text is at a high school level and fairly easy to read.

I found this book by search the card catalog at the OTC library, searching Holocaust, Jewish.

Bendersky, Joseph. A concise history of Nazi Germany. Rev. 2nd ed. United States of America:

Rowman & Littlefield Pub Inc, 2007. 16-40. Print.

This book was written to describe the general history of Nazi Germany. Bendersky provides a
detailed analysis of the rise of the National Socialist Party by describing the origin of the German
Worker’s Party and Hitler’s susceptibility to Aryan race theories. The information is accurate as
primary and secondary sources are identified frequently. Bendersky is a specialist in German
history and was once a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. The reading level is
average, or high school level.

I found this book by searching Google Books for “Nazi Germany History”.

Gilbert, Martin. Kristallnacht: Prelude to Destruction. Great Britain: Perennial, 2007. 23-41.

Print.

The first chapter of this book directly discusses “Kristallnacht”, when Hitler ordered the
expulsion of over 12,000 Jews. As a whole, the book is about “Kristallnacht” and the precedent
it set up for the future of Nazi Germany. I believe the information to be reliable because of the
Harrington 2

frequency of listed primary sources. Gilbert is a British historian who has authored over eighty
books and is the official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill.

I found this book by searching Google Books for “Kristallnacht”.

Gutman, Israel. The Jews of Warsaw, 1939-1943: ghetto, underground, revolt. Indiana

University Press, 1982. 62-118. Print.

Israel Gutman is a Holocaust historian and was an integral part of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in
1943. The book itself was written to recount the events leading up the creation of the ghettos as
well as detailing the unrest and eventual revolution. I believe the information provided is
reliable based on the listing of primary and secondary resources and the author expressed
involvement in the actual events. He also testified at the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a lieutenant
colonel of the Schutzstaffel (S.S.) and a key organizer of the Holocaust itself. It was written to
be readily accessible and could be easily understood by any person with an average reading
level.

I found this through searching “Warsaw Ghetto” on Google Books.

"Holocaust Timeline: The Camps." The Florida Center for Instructional Technology. University

of South Florida, 2005. Web. 27 Feb. 2011.

This web document details, through pictures and text, a general timeline of the death camps used
during the Holocaust. The information was provided for teachers and those pursuing degrees in
instructional technology and was created by the Florida Center for Instructional Technology
through the University of South Florida. I believe the information to be accurate due to its
connection to a scholarly institution. The information is very easy to read, so much so that it
could very well be understood by young teenagers and possibly children.

I found this source through Google Scholar by searching “Holocaust Death Camps Timeline”.

Jeffries, Stuart. "Memories of the Holocaust: Zigi Shipper." Guardian 27 Jan 2010. Web.

27 Feb 2011.

The article was written as a commemoration to Holocaust Memorial Day. I believe the
information to be reliable as it is the testimony of an actual, living Holocaust survivor. The
article provides insight to Shipper’s early life and then describes his experience as a child during
the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. The article’s language is easy to read at probably a junior
high level.

I found this article by searching The Guardian’s homepage online, using the term “Holocaust”.

Kershaw, Ian. Hitler, the Germans, and the final solution. Binghamton, NY: Yale University
Harrington 3

Press, 2008. 49-89. Print.

Ian Kershaw is a historian and professor of modern history at the University of Sheffield. He
also wrote a two-volume biography of Adolf Hitler, which has been deemed the definitive text
on the subject. The book itself provides a lot of detailed analysis not only of The Final Solution
events themselves, but also the perspective of Hitler throught Germany and the rest of the World.
I believe the information is reliable because of the listed primary and secondary sources as well
as his status as an acclaimed historian and author.

I found this book by searching the OTC library card catalog for the subject “Jewish Holocaust”.

Müller, Filip, Helmut Freitag, and Susanne Flatauer.Eyewitness Auschwitz: three years in the
gas
chambers. Chicago, IL: Ivan R. Dee Publisher, 1999. 120-71. Print.

Filip Müller was a transport from Slovakia in 1942, and the book is about the gas chambers used
in Auschwitz. He was alive both when the gassing began and when it ended in 1944. While he
is neither a historian or a psychologist, I believe the information provided and the events
recounted to be reliable based on his relationship and experience with the events, as well as the
provided forward Yehuda Bauer, who is himself a well known and acclaimed voice of Holocaust
history.

I found this book through the card catalog at the OTC library by searching “Jewish Holocaust”.

Roseman, Mark. The Wannsee Conference and the Final Solution: A Reconsideration. United

States of America: Picador USA, 2003. 102-140. Print.

This book is about the Wannsee Conference, in which the Final Solution was conceived. It was
determined the Jews would be deported to certain locations to perform labor and eventually
perish. The remaining would be terminated otherwise. Roseman is a historian of modern
Europe with a particular interest in the Holocaust and German history. I believe the information
to be reliable based on the listing of primary and secondary resources, as well as the fact that he
is a professor at Indiana University in Bloomington.

I found this book through Google Scholar by searching for the terms “Wannsee Conference”.

Schleunes, Karl. The twisted road to Auschwitz: Nazi policy toward German Jews, 1933-1939.

United States of America: University of Illinois Press, 1990. 105-7. Print.

This section of the book provides some insight into the laws passed that began the separation of
Jewish citizens and German citizens. It explains, in brief detail, Jewish law students that were
prevented from becoming lawyers, being referred to as “non-Aryan”. National health insurance
instituted a policy that threatened to not cover expenses for people who sought the work of “non-
Harrington 4

Aryan” doctors. I believe this source to be reliable because it was published by a University and
lists various primary sources.

I found this book through Google Books by searching Nazi policy toward German Jews.

Vogelsang, Peter, and Brian Larsen. Holocaust Education. Ed. Svein W. Rasmusse. The Danish

Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, 2002. Web. 27 Feb. 2011.

This online document was created through the Danish Center for Holocaust and Genocide
Studies as a project to outline the events of the Holocaust and their effect on modern history. I
believe the information provided to be reliable based on its association with the aforementioned
Center. The writing is mostly brief and relatively simple to read.

I found this article through Google Scholar by searching the terms “Holocaust extermination
methods”.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. “The Holocaust.” Holocaust Encyclopedia. Web.

27 February 2011.

I chose this article to aid in my research because it provides a brief, but reliable, summarized
overview of the events of the Holocaust. This information is reliable because it comes straight
from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The site itself was created as a resource
for information regarding WWII and Nazi Germany. The articles and information is easily
accessible to people with any kind of reading ability.

I found this article by browsing the articles hosted on the website.
