1. Indonesian Student's Difficulties In Pronouncing English Diphthong

2. To understand and know what vowel sounds are difficult for students to pronounce and
what factors make students difficult to pronounce English vowels.

3. Research Question

1. What vowel sounds are difficult to be pronounced by the students in indonesia?

2. What factors make the students difficult to pronounce the English Vowel in indonesia?

4. The procedures of doing your research :

1. First, the researcher asks the students for permission to make an agreement when
there is time to fill in the questions that have been made online (Whatsapp application).

2. Second, researchers form groups to maintain communication with students who are
the object of research. Because it makes it easier for researchers to provide rules and
instructions about this research later.

3. Third, the researcher gives instructions to students to download the u-dictionary


application or can see the Oxford dictionary to find out how to pronounce the correct sentence
in the sentence.

4. Fourth, the researcher gave several examples to students via the google form in the
Whatsapp group.
5. Fifth, the researcher sees the progress of the students whether they have met the
standards or not.

6. Then the researcher classifies the types and forms of phonetic writing in the word.

7. Therefore, the researcher conducted interviews with several students to find out how
far they could understand and know how to pronounce and how to write it. In this interview, it
is hoped that it can support the data and get more information about this research

5. Derwin and Murno (2005) argue that having a good pronunciation of the language can help in
normal communication, particularly intelligibility. In other words, learning how to pronounce another
language sounds is very important in interaction and wrong in pronunciation can make
misunderstanding in conversation. So, introducing the correct English pronunciation to the English
students can reduce the error produced in pronouncing English pronunciation. According to
J.D.O'Conner a diphthong is a glide from one vowel to another, and the whole glide acts like one of the
long simple vowels. While "pure" vowels, or monophthongs, are said to have one target tongue position,
diphthongs have two target tongue positions. Diphthongs are represented by two symbols, for example
English word "same" as [seim], where the two vowel symbols are intended to represent approximately
the beginning and ending tongue positions [J.D.O'Conner 1980, 84]. Although a diphthong is normally
represented in phonetic writing by two vowel symbols, this does not follow that both vowel sounds are
equally syllabic.
