Relative Clauses with Prepositions

1. Adjective Clauses

# These clauses have the subject as the main sentence.

2. Object Clauses

# These clauses have a different subject than the main sentence, but the object of the clause is the same

# When the topic is super formal or when the dangling preposition at the end may cause confusion, we
tend to move the preposition at the end to just before the relative pronoun.

The company against which we compete…

# When we put a preposition in the beginning of the relative pronoun(who), it becomes “whom”. This is
a phonetic rule in which we want to end the vowel because we don’t want it to get mixed up with the
next word.

The girl whom I know

The girl who I know – “who I” when you say it, sounds like “why”, which is not good and may create
confusion as to what it means.

The girl for whom I bought a present dumped me.

The sea level above which pressure drops is the reference point.

The fireproof bed despite which there was a fire was recalled.

The age difference, despite which the downward trend continued, contributes to just %5 sortive rate of
poverty.
