Name the Different eras of music and give the salient features of each area.
Monophonic means one note at a time while polyphonic means two or more different notes at the same
time.
- Plainchant is a form of medieval church music that involves chanting. This type of music is the only
allowed in Christian church early on.
- Humanism in Music ( A new philosophy developed in Italy ) It emphasized that life should ne viewed as
preparation for death.
- The Lute was widely used at that time and eventually mixed instruments were used.
Shawm has a conical bore, only wider. It was mostly used in outdoor ceremonial events.
Dulcian is a predecessor of shawm. It produce sound that is less piercing than the shawn.
Trumpet most commonly used is the B flat trumpet. There was also a C, D, E flat and piccolo trumpet.
3) Baroque (1600-1760) Baroque comes from the italian word barocco which means bizarre ( very
strange)
-This is a time when composers experimented with form and styles and instruments.
- Cladiuo Monteverdi was an important contributor specifically his opera Orfeo. The first opera to gain
public welcome.
Viola, Double bass, Harp and Oboe has been discovered and used.
Style Galant, and Sentimental Style has been used in this era.
5) Romanticism (1815-1910) is a concept that included different art mediums; from music to painting to
literature. Romanticism believed in allowing their imagination and passion.
- Beethoven wrote choral, chamber music and opera. He influenced a new group of young composers
guided by the ideals of Romanticism.
6) 20th Century (1900-2000) brought about many innovations on how music was performed and
appreciated. The used of technology has helped to enchance compositions.
- Rock and Roll evolved in United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It is a combination of
African American blues, country, jazz and gospel music.
Piano or Saxophone was often lead instrument but generally replaced by guitar in the middle to late
1950s.
Also called Rap Music. It has four key stylistic elements. (Rapping, Scratching, Breaking and Grafitti
writing)
