Course Description
Spanish I is a rigorous, college prep course that will
provide students with the opportunity to develop the
four skills of language learning: reading, writing,
listening and speaking. Students will be introduced
to vocabulary and grammar which will build the
foundation for communication. Students will also be
introduced to various cultural aspects of many
Spanish speaking countries.
Textbooks
We will be using Avancemos 1 by HMR Publishing. Each
student will have a physical textbook and an online
textbook to use at home and will also receive a workbook
to keep at no charge.
Class Materials
- Designated folder or section in your notebook for
Spanish
- Pencils and pens (blue or black)
- Loose-leaf paper
- Plenty of index cards and something to keep
flashcards in such as a large plastic baggie, pouch
or an index card box.
Grades (Approximate Percentages)
50%- tests, quizzes, projects and dramatizations
20%- participation
15%- homework
15%- final exam

Class Expectations
1. Be prepared: Log into Zoom class on time and have
textbook, workbook, and pen or pencil ready. Warm-up
and activities for the day should be opened and ready to
go at the beginning of each class session.
2. Come to School & Participate: Success depends on
active participation in the language; therefore, attendance
and active participation are very important. Students are
required to log into Zoom class on time, turn on camera
and remain an active participant throughout the entire
Zoom session. Active participants have cameras on,
complete warm-ups on time, ask and answer questions,
and participate in partner / group activities.
3. Make up Missed Work: Make sure that you check
Canvas for assignments daily. Missed assignments can be
submitted up to 1 week late for ½ credit. If submitting late
due to an excused absence, submit within 1 week of for full
credit. Be sure to write “absent” in the comments.
4. Complete AND CORRECT your Homework:
Homework is checked in class and credit is given for
completion. Students should do their homework and, most
importantly, check it and correct any errors made.
5. Be Honest: Cheating on any assignment will result in a
zero. Cheating is considered using, giving or receiving
unauthorized help. Also, students may not use programs,
apps, the Internet or Spanish speaking friends/relatives to
translate any material from English to Spanish for any
assignment. This is considered plagiarism and will result
in a zero for the assignment and a referral to
administration.
