occasional trill from the telephone. Well, how did it turn out?
Most people I speak to had a good summer. Prices might have been
somewhat subdued and significant profit might still be elusive, but there
was plenty of work around – a little too much for some perhaps.
The improvement was largely expected. The election, despite its
inconclusive result, produced a change of style the like of which we
haven’t seen for many years. Whether you had a personal political
victory or not in May it did provide an optimistic shot in the arm that
must have contributed to a more buoyant market. House prices had
already started to re-climb the cliff they had stumbled off a year earlier,
and with these rises so the market began to move again.
As we go to press this month, however, we find house prices slipping
back again, yet better than expected growth figures reported: conflicting
trends that cloud prophesies of what might be to come next year.
Conclusions, as always, are impossible. However, I did hear one politician I could have sworn I left it here ...

create a private sector led recovery – with
small business growth placed at the forefront

follow, disproportionate taxation will remain
a major barrier to growth for small
businesses. “For years small business
taxation has steadily increased, so this

Staff motivation
Steve Jordan from The Words Workshop took
time out from editing the R&S to quiz the
attendees about staff motivation. He said that
most people understand that their ‘people are
their greatest asset’, something of a cliché
nowadays but true nonetheless. Unfortunately
his experience didn’t seem to support that
perception: whenever anyone sent him a photo
for the R&S it was always of a van or a
warehouse not a person. Steve made some
suggestions as to how staff could be motivated
without resorting to large financial payouts and
asked for others’ opinions. By far the strongest
long-term motivational tool was to plan out a
career path for key staff, that achieves their
ambitions and satisfies the strategic aims of the
company, and make sure they can see how
they are progressing towards their goals. This
linked well with Loren’s earlier presentation

Proposed four metre

As expected, the news that the EU may seek
a four metre height limit in its European
Whole Vehicle Type Approval parameters
proves very unwelcome for some. “We’ve
had calls and e-mails from worried operators
and talked with the FTA, RHA and others,”
said Robin Dickeson, Manager Commercial
Vehicle affairs at The Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). There
is clearly widespread concern that the move
may hike running costs for operators and
damage business prospects for UK trailer
makers. Most other states in the EU have
four metre height limits and few are likely to
worry about what they may see as a small
change to tie up a loose end.
However, German hauliers apparently
want the country’s four metre height limit
relaxed by 10cm. The reason is that most of
their Mega trailers tend to work at 4.08m.
