2 Folk Dance:
Folk dancing is an
activity that demonstrate the culture, customs and traditions of people. It tells about our
geographical, historical and sociological background.
Folk dance is a series of physical movements that are accompanied by music. Most folk
dances relate to the common people with a specific culture. Folk dance does not have a formal
set of rules or principles. It simply captures the prevalling values of the majority and the
townspeople regardless of their social standing or economic status. It embodies the elements
which are unique or at least indicative of a particular culture while still sharing some broad
characteristics with dances developed or adopted from other cultures.
There are certain qualities that apply to a folk dance, first of which is that the town folks
themselves or a group of people within a given community creates it. It is open to anyone who
wants to participate and is not exclusive to a particular group of the population. It remains
pure and unique as the result of mass popular consent rather than privilege. In this sence, it is
similar to more modern forms of dance such as street or vernacular dance. It is also typical for
a folk dance to have easy steps that just about anyone can learn.
