Thank you for the sandwich

Mom passed away. Your
prayers and concern have been a
great comfort to us. As Fr. John
said in the bulletin last week-
end, “we have lost many beloved
parishioners lately.” Each time,
you have been there and taken care of what-
ever needed to be done. That reflects how lov-
ing and caring our church family is. These pa-
rishioners we have lost recently did a lot for the
church. Let’s all come together and continue
helping others in their memory.

Dear Parishioners,
One of the changes coming in the
new translation of the liturgical
texts is the use of the word
“chalice.” Currently when the wine
is consecrated, the priest says,
“Take this, all of you, and drink
from it: this is the cup of my blood.”
That will change to “this is the chal-
ice of my blood.”
The important difference is that
“chalice” is a more sacral word.
Sacral means pertaining to sacred
rites and observances. It is a more sacred word. When people
drink beer, they have a mug, can, or bottle of beer. They don’t
use a cup, which is what we use to drink coffee or tea. Wine,
however, is never drunk from a mug. People don’t typically go
to a bar and order a mug of wine. The bartender would look at
them like they had three heads. And cup is just not the correct
word for the object that is used to consecrate wine. Because
when I use the word cup, I could mean coffee cup or paper cup
that I would throw away. No, the Precious Blood of the Divine
Savior belongs in a Chalice.
I think that this change is excellent and I look forward to it.
Too often we run the risk of being too comfortable or folksy with
the Mass. When we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we are
there to worship someone who is totally other than what we
are. Everything we do during the Mass, the way we dress, our
posture, and the language we use should indicate that what we
are doing is sacred.

LENTEN MISSION WITH FR. PINTO
Sts. Francis and Anne Church in Kolin will host a
Lenten Mission March 14-20. The theme is
“Precepts of the Catholic Church” with Fr. Santan
Pinto, S.O.L.T. The mission will include prayer,
confessions, Mass, teachings, healing services, Ado-

MARIAN LENTEN PILGRIMAGE 2011
Father Anthony Catella will lead a pil-
grimage to EWTN in Birmingham, Ala-
bama, during Lent. The trip will include
live Mass, program and Caritas, to be pre-
sent where Marija Lunetti of Medjugorje
will be staying as the Queen of Peace ap-
pears to her. Depart 6:00 am March 21 and return
March 23 at 6:00 pm. Bus reservation is $135; room

FR. KEN ROY MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Fr. Ken Roy Memorial Golf Tourna-
ment will be held Friday, March 11 at
Oak Wing Golf Course in Alexandria.
Proceeds will benefit Holy Savior Menard
High School’s athletic and academic pro-
grams. In the spirit of Fr. Roy, who showed
particular love for the poor, a portion of the proceeds
from the tournament will also be donated to one of his

LENTEN SERIES BEGINS MARCH 15
The Diocese will offer a Catholic Clas-
sics Lenten Series beginning March
15. Sessions will include presentations
on the faith and will focus on a differ-
ent topic in each deanery. In the Cen-
tral Deanery, Father Luke Melcher
will present Philosophy and Theology
of St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesdays, March 15, 22,
29 and April 5. The series is free and open to the
