AIM :

Contextual design of a leisure island in Andaman to promote

sustainable tourism through study of sangam landscape.

GENERAL INFORMATION :

Sangam landscape is categorization of various landform into five

types and is the name given to a poetic device that was
characteristic of love poetry in classical tamil.

THE CORE OF THE DEVICE WAS THE CATEGORISATION OF POEMS

INTO DIFFERENT THINAIS OR MODES, DEPENDING ON THE
NATURE, LOCATION, MOOD AND TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP
REPRESENTED BY THE POEM. EACH THINAI WAS CLOSELY
ASSOCIATED WITH A PARTICULAR LANDSCAPE, AND IMAGERY
ASSOCIATED WITH THAT LANDSCAPE - ITS FLOWERS, TREES,
WILDLIFE, PEOPLE, CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

Each landscape has its own vernacular architecture which is

contextual to time, place and people.

1.mountains - tribal settlements in ooty, kolli hills and kodaikanal.

2.forest- SATHYAMANGALAM, THEENI.

3.cropland- areas like thanjavur , karaikudi chettinadu houses

4.seashore- Goa ,Pondicherry and Andaman and nicobar islands

5.desert- rajasthani architecture ,kutch region

Through the study of various attributes of each landscape, the

evolution of lifestyle connected with each landscape is
understood and thereafter this specific lifestyle has governed the
local architecture of each place.

As neithal has no specific season to stay or visit and from ancient

days water is always connected with fun and pleasure, the site is
located in Andaman island (neithal-seashore)

Design objective:

• To design for the context to suit people ,place and time

(Andaman island- neithal)

• To Be inspired by nature and be sustainable, healthy,

conserving, and diverse.
• To Satisfy social, physical, and spiritual needs.
• To "grow out of the site" and be unique.

• To design disaster resistant structures to withstand

natural calamities like earthquake.

Scope:

a. Architectural scope:

This project scopes out to study and understanding of

vernacular style, material and climate of Andaman and provide
state of art leisure facilities inside a single island like

• Various categories of spaces for accommodation.

• Common activity area.
• Area for water sports and common games.
• Library.
• Service areas and allied facilities.

Limitations:

study the modern leisure activities and vernacular architecture

associated with neithal and design an leisure island in
Andaman.

The Cinque Island which is considered to be an appendage of the

Marine National Park is most certainly one of the gorgeous
islands.

The Cinque Island at Andaman is completely devoid of any sort of

human life but exquisite corals and baffling marine life dwells at
the abstruse depths of the opulent seas.

Another attraction at the Cinque Island is the humongous and at

the same time bizarre bar constructed from sand which acts as a
rendezvous point for the twin islands of South and North Cinque.
