Foreword
The increase in demand together with hike in oil and gas prices
during the recent past has built-up attention towards the
exploration and production (E&P) sector worldwide. The trend has
also influenced the E&P activities in Pakistan, where the energy
demand and supply gap is continuously widening.
Government of Pakistan (GoP) has Development Company Limited (OGDCL),

Exploration opportunities

R
available with PPL
ecent extensive studies conducted in-house as well as
by a consultant spanning over several years of data
gathering and interpretation thereof suggest presence of
significant hydrocarbon resource potential in different
sedimentary basins of Pakistan. Besides significant
hydrocarbon resource potential in the frontier Balochistan
Basin, one of the astonishing outcome of these studies is the
suggestion that prominent hydrocarbon resource potential also
is expected in the mature Indus basins. This, coupled with
energy starved readily available domestic market provides
enough impetus for continued exploration efforts with renewed
vigor in these basins. Whilst exploration in frontier Balochistan
Basin can still be carried out on the basis of modern version of
old technologies, exploration in the Lower Indus Basin, where
Pakistan Petroleum Limited has recently acquired 8 exploration
licenses, will require state-of- the art acquisition and
interpretive techniques for finding hydrocarbons from
unconventional traps. These techniques are expected to
convert conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resource
potential in to reserves base, especially with reference to
subtle, stratigraphic traps, tight gas, shale gas etc.
The following pages give a synopsis of the joint venture
exploration opportunities available to the sound, interested
E & P companies.
