8B - REPORTING VERBS
(1) Mi ha consigliato di andare dalla polizia.
He/She advised me to go to the police.
(2) Ho promesso di mantenere il suo segreto. (2 possible structures after reporting verb)
I promised to keep her/the secret.
I promised that I would keep the/her secret.
(3) Si è offerto di aiutarmi con la traduzione.
He offered to help me with the translation.
(4) Si è scusata per essere arrivata in ritardo.
She apologised for being(arriving) late. Also (less English): She apologised for having been late.
(5) Mi hanno convinto ad andare con loro alla festa. (use: persuade)
They persuaded me to go to the party with them / to go with them to the party.
(6) Tommy ha negato di aver mangiato tutti i biscotti! (2 reporting structures)
Tommy denied eating all the biscuits! (Less common: Tommy denied having eaten all the biscuits.)
Tommy denied that he had eaten all the biscuits.
(7) Solo John ha rifiutato di aderire al piano, dicendo che non avrebbe funzionato.
Only John refused to follow the plan, saying that it would never work. (notice verb tense)
(8) Ti ha fatto promettere di non dire niente a nessuno, vero?
He made you promise not to tell anyone, didn’t he?
