Abstract
In this module the students will explore transformations of a square root function algebraically,

graphically, and using a table of values.

1 Transformation of Functions Exploration

In this lesson you will be investigating the transformation of a function by examining the notations, the
tables of values and the graphs of the function and its transformations. After working through problems 1 -
11, you will be able to explain the eects of the following transformations on the graph of the function f (x)
if c > 0 .
f (x) + c ; f (x) − c ; f (x + c) ; f (x − c) ; cf (x) if 0 < c < 1 ; cf (x) if c > 1 ; f (cx) if 0 < c < 1 ; f (cx)
if c > 1 ; − (f (x)) ; f (−x) . √
In problems 1 - 11, you will examine the function f (x) = x and its transformations.
Exercise 1 (Solution on p. 7.)

Given the function f (x) = x and the table of values for f (x) , graph y = f (x) on the grid
