1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose. - This report contains time history presentations of data

recorded during the Mercury - Atlas Wo. 8 (MA.-8) mission and presents information
relating to the acquisition, processing, and analysis of these data.

1.2 FlightL_SumEary - MA-8, consisting of Project Mercury Spacecraft

No. 16 and Atlas Booster No. 113D, was launched from Cape Canaveral at 1215:11 Gl-3?
on 3 October 1962. This manned orbital mission .was the eighth launching of a
Mercury spacecraft by an Atlas booster.
Spacecraft Ho. 16, christened "Sigma 7"> carried Astronaut Walter M.
Schirra through approximately six earth orbits and the re-entry. The astronaut
and the spacecraft were recovered in the predetermined impact area northeast of
Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean.
The objectives of MA-8 were to (a) evaluate the performance of the
man/spacecraft and supporting systems, (b) investigate the effects of extended
orbital space flight on the astronaut, (c) evaluate the performance of, and exer-
cise the Mercury Network Communications and supporting forces, and (d) conduct re-
search studies in light/visibility exercises, general-interest photography, re-
/t_V •
entry heating effects, and space nuclear radiation phenomsna. UTT^Y]

2.0 DATA - GENERAL

2.1 Data Records - Data records obtained, during the MA-8 mission include
(a) the magnetic tape recorded on-board the spacecraft, (b) magnetic tapes re-
corded at the ground telemetry stations, (c) motion picture film from, the astro- -
naut observer camera, and (d) transcriptions of voice communications. Data con-

mission time. The high-frequency, and low-frequency multiplexed data (consisting

of VCO outputs for certain individual parameters and the PAM outputs of the high-
•-,

frequency and low-frequency commutators) were recorded on Tracks 2 and 6 as con-

tinuous functions. All astronaut comments and voice communications between the
spacecraft and the ground network stations were recorded on Track; 7 :as---they
occurred. >,

2.1.2 Telemetry Data Tapes - Data telemetered from the space-

craft were recorded on magnetic tape at the "Tele II" and other ground telemetry
stations dispersed along the orbital ground track. These data included all of the
commutated and multiplexed parameters that were recorded on-board, except the
commutated low-level temperatures (Track 3), the analog DC voltages and currents,.;
and the stick positions. Atlantic Missile Range Time (AMRT) was also recorded by
the ground telemetry stations, along with the satellite clock time, which was the
only time reference recorded on-board. .

2.1.3 Communications Transcriptions - All comments by .the

astronaut and the Mercury Hetwork Communications were correlated to time from
launch and transcribed by the NASA.'

2.1.4 Astronaut Observer Camera Coverage - Color motion pic-

tures of the astronaut were^i taken on l6=am film at a frame rate of six frames per
second, continuously during the exit and re-entry phases and intermittently during
the orbit and retrograde phases.

2.2 Data Processed - Duplicate copies of both the on-board recorded

tape and the "Tele II" ground telemetry station tape were received from the NASA.
However, the data presentations in Section 5.0 were processed from the on-board
tape recording only. All parameters recorded by means of both the high-frequency
and low-frequency commutators were processed and are presented unless they were
redundant; in the latter case, the high-frequency commutator data were favored.
Tfce tabulations on Pages 5.1 through 5.6 present a listing of all parameters pro-
cessed, along with their recorded locations and related processing information.

2.3 Data Quality - The quality of the duplicate on-board magnetic tape
record was good. Variations in the data were exhibited during the high-"q." exit
environment between 00:00:50 aa<l 00:01:20 mission time. Recorder transients or
drop-outs of several seconds duration occurred at the following times from launch:

evidenced in the presentations were PDM data points that were refused because the
recorded signals violated conditions established for commutated data. In the case
of ttuj iat. -.r voids, a bad area existed between- 07:2^:00 and 07:27:00 mission time*
The mission instrumentation references (Z/R calibrations) were consistent
within one percent between the pre-flight and in-flight records and between the
high and low-frequency tracks, except for the high-frequency conmutated body
temperature discussed in Paragraph 4.5»8. All instrumentation reference deflec-
tions recorded during the mission were in reasonable agreement with those of the
original instrument calibration.
Segment 19, Heat Shield Temperature, of the low-frequency commutator was
the only parameter not acceptable for presentation, it being inoperative.
During the flight the satellite clock (the clock aboard the spacecraft
from which the time is recorded) gained approximately five seconds when related to
AMKTi This error was slowly accumulated, throughout the mission. No effort was
made to account in the data processing for this relatively insignificant '
discrepancy*

3.0 DATA PROCESSING

The tabulations on Pages 5»1 through 5.6 contain general information con-
cerning the MA-8 data acquisition, processing, and presentation. Specific data
processing procedures are covered in the following discussion.

variations against elapsed time from launch which occurred at 1215:34- GMT. The
procedures used for correlating these data are outlined in the sub-sections that
follow.

3.1.1 High and Low-Frequency Commutators PPM Data (Tracks 4

and g) - These data were correlated using the on-board satellite clock time, .which
was recorded on both tape tracks, as the time base and biasing the times to launch.
The incremental time bias to launch was obtained from the "Tele II" tape records
of the satellite clock time and GMT., The data from each commutator revolution
(block) were plotted against the biased time recorded for the block.

3*1.2 Low-Level Commutator PPM Data (Track 3, Special Tempera-

ture Survey), and High and Low-Frequency MultiplexedL Data (Tracks 2 and 6) - The
satellite clock time was not recorded on these tracks. The data recorded on these
tracks were correlated by linearly interpreting time (assuming perfect playback
compensation) within 4-minwte-and-40-second increments of total mission time. These
time increments were positively correlated with the biased satellite clock times by
composite playback of a track being correlated and the satellite clock tines. The

special teinperature data were plotted .against the time interpreted at the beginning
of each block, whereas the multiplexed data vere continuously interpreted. j

as. variations against a compensated playback time. The beginning of each test was
correlated to the biased satellite clock times by composite playback of the two
Sanctions.

3.1.4 Event Elapsed Time - The elapsed times for the sequen-
tial events were established as the biased satellite clock times indicated during
the blocks in which the events transpired. The elapsed times for non-instrumented
events were an interpretation of the processed data, ground telemetry station re-
cords, and/or the communication logs.

3.2 Scaling and Presentation of Analog (Multiplexed) Parameters - Con-

tinuously recorded parameters were scaled from their calibrations using a linear
interpolation or family of interpolations within one percent of the calibrations.
When permissible, the calibrations were adjusted .to agree with recorded pre-launch
ambient and/or PEM data conditions. The plotting was accomplished on plotters
incorporating a voltage-integrated time drive between 4-minute-and-40-second
correlation edit stops. Processing of the EGG data is discussed in Paragraph
3.4.2.(b). .

j 3«3 Scaling of Coarautated Parameters - Procedures common to the scaling

t
|of all cceautated data that were processed in digital form are discussed in the
j ^relieving sub-sections.

3.3.1 Parameters with Linear Calibrations - Parameters having

calibrations which were linear within one percent over their normal operating
ranges and requiring no adjustments were scaled from a slope and intercept of each
calibration. The scaling range was unrestricted.

3.3.2 Parameters with-Non-Linear Calibrations - Non-linear

calibrations requiring no adjustments were interpolated using nine linear segments
to define the curve. Non-linear scaling vas limited in range between the accepted
instrumentation limits of -5 and +1Q5 percent. Calibrations not performed through
these limits were extrapolated linearly from a tangent at the extreme calibration
point(s) to -5 and/or +105 percent. Data exceeding these limits were not plotted
and were tabulated as -0. •

3»3»3 Parameters Having Reference Calibrations (Z and/or R

Calibrations).- All parameters having provisions for a Z and/or R calibration were
adjusted in the following manner. Nominal Z and/or R calibration deflections were
obtained for each parameter using the pre-flight and in-flight instrumentation
references (instrumentation calibrations). Linear parameters were handled as in
Paragraph 3»3»lj except that the calibrated slopes and intercepts were proportion-
ately re-evaluated using the nominal Z and/or R calibrations. For non-linear
parameters, the same re-evaluation of the slopes and intercepts was applied, but
the adjustments were made to the recorded deflection before entering the non-linear,
pine-slope tables.

accurately defined ambient conditions were adjusted to the pre-launch conditions

established between -00:00:35 and -00:00:16 elapsed times. This correction involv-
ed biasing all scaled values from Paragraph 3.3.! or 3»3«2 by a constant adjust-
ment. An average of the ambient data points was used in the adjustment.

3.3.5 Referenced Temperatures - All directly recorded 'tempera-

ture parameters and temperature references were scaled by one of the above methods.
Those::temperatures related to a reference were presented as an algebraic addition
of the two scaled temperatures.
3.U Special Data Processes - Special digital computations, editing
routines, and data assemblies required for the data presentation are discussed in
the following sub-sections.
3.U.I Scaled PPM Data - The following processes were applied
to data that had been scaled by one of the methods described in Section 3*3*
(a) Watts and Watt-Hours - The main bus power was
computed from the main DC bus current and voltage for each block of data that vas
sampled. Determination of the energy supplied by the main bus was a successive •
integration of the -power, using the average of two consecutive power values and
their incremental tims.
(b) Eg02 Supplies in Pounds - The EzQz supplies remain-
ing (presented in pounds) were scaled from an RCS supply pressure versus remaining
fuel calibration by the procedure established in Paragraph 3.3.2. The calibration

was a controlled measurement of the spacecraft ^gOg supply pressures and the
supplies at ground conditions.
(c) Oxygen Supplies in Pounds - The OQ supply pressures
were related to the remaining 02 poundage values using the Gas Law pV = KWRT.

generalized compressibility curves, .
V = 198 in?, and
R = 579.6 in/°R.
(The temperature variations of the primary and secondary 02 supplies were
assumed to be the same.)
The weight (W) of secondary oxygen at launch was determined -assuming the tempera-
ture of the bottle = 7Q°F. Using this computed oxygen quantity in the secondary
supply as the amount retained in that bottle for the entire mission (indicated by
the pressure data), the oxygen temperatures were then determined throughout the
mission by reverse application of the gas law. These theoretical secondary oxygen
temperatures were then applied with the gas law to the primary bottle pressures for
the temperature compensated 02 supplies (pounds) used in the data presentation.

3A.2 Analog Data - The following processes were applied to

multiplexed parameters.
(a) Respiration Rate - The respiratory signal recorded
on the 1.3 kc subcarrier of the high-frequency multiplex was compensated using the
3.0 kc reference and digitized at 25 samples per second. The presented respiration
rate was computed from the digital samples by identifying the peak and valley of
each respiratory cycle and computing the rate from the interval of eight

(b) Re-Entry Rate Comparisons - A composite presents*;y
tion was made of the pitch and yaw rates, dynamic pressure, and the ECS fuel supr^',';
plies of MA-4 and subsequent missions. These data are presented from .05g relay
actuation through drogue chute deploy and are aligned at the peak dynamic pressures*
The rates were a real-time, compensated, oscillographic playback, with mission :t
elapsed time extrapolated from drogue chute deploy. The dynamic pressures were y
transcribed from the NASA-submitted data and the RCS fuel supplies were a trans- •
cription of the processed data. Nominal function scales were used.

for the occurrence of sunrises and sunsets at the spacecraft were calculated from.
analytic expressions relating the spacecraft trajectories with sidereal time. The ;
sunrises and sunsets were presented as elapsed times when a line-of-sight from the
spacecraft to the center of the sun transits the horizon of the earth. Development
of expressions relating the sun rays to the spacecraft incorporated all factors
except atmospheric bending effects on light rays, which are relatively insignifi-
cant. The calculations involved assumptions that the surface of the earth was
spherical with a mean radius of 3444 nautical miles, the sun rays were parallel,
and the .spacecraft traveled the predicted trajectory. :. :

, . /v 3.5.5 Editorial - All parameters were edited against direct

playback records to assure that no data transients, recoverable within the record-
ing systems capability, were excluded from the plot presentations due to the appli-
ed data sampling or to insure that no psuedo transients (noise) were included.
However, disputable transients that could have been identified as actual or spuri«7

U.2 Parameter Accuracies - In the data summary tabulations on Pages 5.1

through 5.6, the "Average Slope" reflects the general accuracy (one percent) vhich
can be expected from the parameter playback, but It does not reflect the accuracy
of the instrumentation before the signal vas recorded*

U.3 Reliable Limits - Some of the data that are presented were Inter-
preted beyond the ranges for vhich the parameters were calibrated* The valid
ranges (Calibration Limits) in vhich the presented data may be analyzed are
established in the data summary tabulations on Pages 5.1 through 5.6. Since the
calibrated limits of referenced temperatures are not directly Indicative of their
reliable limits, the valid^ranges of these paramters vere Investigated and are
discussed In Section 4.5.

It-. 4 Sensor Locations - All temperature sensor locations are illustrated

on their respective plots. Structural coordinates vere used for the locations.
Electrical and pressure sensor locations are established In the respective Project
Mercury Familiarization Manuals.

4.5 Specific Parameters - The following sub-sections contain remarks

concerning the recording and processing of specific parameters or functions, which
are pertinent to the analysis of these data.

'.. 4.5.1 6 0 0 Series . . . ' ' •

(a) Main DC Bus Voltage and Current (Segments 26H, 3&H
and Multiplexed) - The multiplexed (continuous) and digital main DC bus voltages
and currents were redundant in all aspects except ia the manner in which they were
recorded.
(b) Main IX! Bus Energy Supplied (Calculated);- The
energy supplied is accumulated, beginning 20 seconds prior to launch.

4.5.2 700 Series

. Isolated DC Bus Voltage (Segment 75H) - The transients
of this parameter that occurred during a greater portion of the mission vere not
voltage drops as indicated, but were oscillations similar to that illustrated
below. .

The voltage drops indicated on the plots resulted from presentation of a three
point average every 25th data point and are, therefore, an approximate average of
the transient magnitudes.

4.5.3 800 Series - Areas exhibiting non-transient conditions

have been removed from the data.

4.5.4 900 Series - In compensating the 62 supplies (pounds)

for variations in temperatures (Sub-section 3.4.l(c)), it was established that the
secondary 02~supply temperature increased 6°F during the first hour and 40 minutes
of mission time. This increase was frca an arbitrarily assigned temperature of
70°F. The'secondary ©2 supply temperature stabilized for the remainder of the
mission. • ' • . .

4.5.5 3.000 Series - The environmental pressures were extra-

polated beyond their calibrated limits and, therefore, are not reliable beyond
ranges noted in the following tabulation.
Parameter Segment Location Calibrated Range
Cabin Og Partial Pressure 6HL 0 to 15.5 psia
Suit Pressure 8H 0.25 to 14.7psia
St-viic Pressure 22H 0.25 to 14.7 psia
Cabin Pressure 82H 0.5 to 14.7 psia

(a) Cabin Oa Partial Pressure (Ssgaent 6HL) - Both

recordings of the cabin Og partial pressure exhibited erratic characteristics
during several portions of the mission. Periodically there were additional momen-
tary transients that were reflected by the spurious data points presented.
(b) Suit and Cabin Pressure (Segments 8H and 82Hl -
The suit and cabin pressure transients at 09:07:50 and 09:08:00 existed in the data
records.

static pressure shortly after landing vas verified to exist in the data recording.
The static pressures exhibited at the lover levels were somewhat higher in noise
level than indicated "by the other environmental pressures. , . •••'.:'

4.5.6 1100 Series

'•••''" P.CS 5pOp Solenoid Inlet "B" Hut Temperatures (Low Pitch
Up and Down, Automatic, Segments 58L and ?6H respectively) - The temperatures of. .
these two "B" nuts, unlike the other "B" nut temperatures, vrere measured from a
reference. To facilitate computer programing, the pitch up "B" nut temperature
was processed from the low-frequency commutator and, thus, was added to its refer-'
ence, the cabin temperature, obtained frca the low-frequency conmutator. The pitch
down "B" nut temperature was handled in the same manner, but was processed from the
high-frequency commutator. The cabin temperatures exhibited variations approaching
6°F- between the high and low-frequency cciamutators. . ' ''._ .

4.5.7 1200 Series .

plot presented) and the low-frequency commutated body temperature revealed (l)
the pre -launch instrumentation reference produced an adjustment of approximately
9% in the high-frequency commutator and very little change in the low-frequency
commutator; (2) the high-frequency commutator instrumentation reference adjustment
was in the proper direction but of an insufficient magnitude to produce compatible
values between the high and low-frequency commutators; (3) the high-frequency •
commutator mission instrumentation calibrations exhibited approximately a 5$ drift
between the first and last calibration, whereas the low-frequency commutator
calibrations were consistent; and (k) tlie high-frequency commutator body tempera-
tures were lower than those of the low-frequency commutator ranging between 0.2°P
at the beginning of the mission to 0.4°F at the end. A nominal instrumentation
t
calibration from the pre-launch was used. If the high-frequency commutator body'
temperature had been adjusted for the calibration drift, the two body temperature
measurements would have been in closer agreement.
(b) Cabin and Suit Inlet Temperatures _(Segments 10HL
and IIHL) - The cabin and suit inlet temperatures from the high and low-frequency
commutators were not redundant, employing individual instrumentation circuits.
' . . . . . The cabin temperature probe utilized for the meter
observed by the astronaut was located in an area removed from the cabin inlet
temperature (Segments 10HL) thermocouples. This area was one in which air circula-
tion is poor. .
. The suit inlet temperature variations exhibited between
the high and low-frequency commutators at the elevated levels were validated. A

4.5.10 l800 Series - Twenty-one blood pressure tests vere

made by the astronaut. However, the l4th test was terminated before exhibiting a
systolic and, therefore, was not presented.

4.5.11 21CO Series - Resistance eiecasnt sensors vere employed

only to measure the cabin skin temperatures which are presented in this series. '.
These temperatures displayed abnormal, increasing, momentary transients of 5$ to
10$ recorder deflections during the following intervals:
