In this text, named ‘’You Can Love What You Do For A Living, But Still Think It Feels

Like Work’’ by Kat Boogaard , the author is stating the fact that a job can never be
100% enjoyable and fun, no matter how much someone might like what they’re doing
and how much passionate they are about it. She tries to give us the message that even
if we sometimes feel stressed about our job, that doesn’t mean we are in the wrong line
of work. The author gives us 4 reasons why she believes that is true and analyzes them
one by one.
The first reason is that even subconsciously, an activity that someone would have
loved doing in their spare time is not as enjoyable when it has to be done in a certain
amount of time. Even if you love your occupation, it sometimes may not be what you
want to deal with at that moment, therefore making it not as enjoyable because you
always have on your mind that it is something that needs to be done and not something
you want to be doing . As the author says ‘’ Unlike fun, work isn’t always something
that you want to do—it’s something that you need to do’’ meaning that sometimes
even if you do something that you love, it can get a bit tiring when it’s obligatory and
has a certain deadline. Moving to the author’s second point, with title ‘’Your number
one passion isn’t always a realistic career’’ the author states the fact that most of the
time, what someone is passionate about isn’t what they should pursue to be their
career, as most hobbies aren’t capable to provide you with a satisfactory salary. Our
talents and passions are hard to become our career, as they are really hard to get
appreciated by other people.
In addition to that, Kat Boogaard also talks about how no matter what your job is
and how much you like it, there’s always going to be at least one thing that you don’t
like about it. Even if that is a small little detail or a duty related to your job. ‘’…every
position comes along with at least a few pesky tasks or responsibilities that will
simply never be enjoyable. You may adore what you do 98% of the time. ‘’ That is
unfortunately something no one can avoid and something that exists in everyone’s job
and even dream job. Lastly, the third and final point of the author is that when someone
loves their job, they also work harder and longer in order to do it perfectly. That means
that they get tired of it. “…it’s a never ending cycle” she says. People get exhausted
trying to do the best they can, in order to get the satisfaction they need, the feeling that
they have accomplished something.
In conclusion, what the author wants to get through to us, is that no job is be
perfect. There are always hard days. There are always times when someone feels
stressed, really tired or not in the mood to work. That doesn’t mean that the job they’ve
chosen is not for them and doesn’t make them happy. “Do what you love and you’ll
never work another day in your life’’ is, according to the author, an unrealistic
expression that makes people think they haven’t chosen the right career and shouldn’t
be taken completely seriously.
