Lorenzo, the Captain of the troop, is in love with Zerlina (the Inn-keeper’s daughter), who is to be married the following day, against her will, to a wealthy farmer. Lord and Lady Alleash arrive in great agitation at tho Inn, having been robbed on their journey by the banditti, Lorenzo, hearing this news, suddenly departs with his men in the hope of speedily capturing the band. Fra Diavolo then enters, disguised as the Marquis San Marco; and in the course of conversation with Lord Alleash, leans that a large sum in bank-notes is sewn up in the lining of his coat and in his wife’s dress. Lorenzo, having defeated the robbers, retumis and restores some of the bank-notes to Lady Alleash, who, finding that the Captain rofuses to be rewarded, persuades Zerlina to accept ten thousand franes in her lover's name, Beppo and Giacomo, two of the banditti, enter disguised as pilgrims, and their lodging in the Inn for the night is paid for by the assumed Marquis. ‘The second act takes place in a chamber in the In. Zerlina, preparing to retire to rest, sings and dances before the looking-giass, when she is startled by a laugh from the robbers, who are concealed in an ante-room, After recovering herself, she goes to sleep, and Beppo is about to stab her when Lorenzo returns with his earbineers. Lord and Lady Alleash are aroused, and the supposed Marquis being diseovered, tells Lord Alleash that he has appointed a meeting with his wife, and Lorenzo that he has eome after Zerlina. Lorenzo challenges the disguised Marquis to a duel; which he favours, believing that he shall thus be enabled to carry out his plans. In the third act, during a scene between Lorenzo and Zezlina, the latter is surprised at hearing the song she sang on the previous evening ; and, looking round, she perceives Beppo and Giacomo imitating her dancing before the looking-glass. She come munieates her suspiciotis to Lorenzo; the robbers are seized, and Gixeomo, under threat of being shot, is made to toll a bell in the hermitage (the signal arranged for his Chief to appear), and Fra Diavolo, descending the monntain path, is instantly smrounded by the “re and seeured. t i | ENITOR’S NOTE. The passage beginning on the words “One short year, then,” in the Trio, No. 8, is printed wherever the phrase ocenrs in all the arrangements ; the alteration is intended probably to give greater lightness to the phrase ; it has uot been adopted, but every one who prefers it so can easily mark it on the copy. At pages 142 and 148, the hort note after the rest is always a demisemiquaver in the score; it has been altered to a semiquaver te avoid the nnpleasant jer of te piano against tho voice, which has this accont sometimes. Vast numbers of slurs have been dispensed with that are inserted in all the pianoforte editions. ‘They render it impossible to distinguish whore the composer has renlly marked slurs, to obtain a more deciiled portamento than ought to be a matter of eourse with every one who sings.
