Curriculum Expectations

Overall Expectations
Solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of single-digit whole numbers, using a
variety of strategies.

Specific Expectations

Solve a variety of problems involving the addition and subtraction of whole numbers to 20,
using concrete materials and drawings.

Content/Main Ideas

 Involves students adding and subtracting whole numbers with hands on material to
help visualize the math work.
 This will allow students to practice addition and subtraction through a game which
students can perceive as being played for fun, not to develop mathematics skills.

Learning Goals/Success Criteria

Learning Goals
 Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction.

Success Criteria
 Get students to become more comfortable with addition and subtraction with an
engaging activity.
 Using participation with activity to show engagement in the activity.

Developmental Strategies and Activities

Activity: Dice Rolling Addition

- Educator explains the guidelines of the activity, rolling the two dice that have
numbers one to six on them and counting the two numbers and adding them
together. The two numbers added together are listed onto a paper and another
student repeats this process as the two students add their own numbers.
- Once the child that has rolled has identified what the numbers on each dice is, the
educator pulls out a group of small objects for the child to count.
- The student is encouraged to count out enough cubes for each number found and
then add the two numbers together to find the total of what that student rolled.
- The total found is then written onto a piece of paper and the next child goes.
- Once the children are done with this the activity can be switched where the biggest
number rolled is subtracted by the smallest number rolled.

Concluding Activity

Activity: Review of What Occurred

- Once the activity has concluded, the students are asked if they understand what they
have been shown with the activity and

Safety Considerations

 Safe environment.
3

 Encourage children to participate, rather than force them to.

 Respect personal boundaries.
