Pipe Flow Simulation

Introduction
Observation is one of the main goals in the field of engineering, it is important to be
knowledgeable, on the behavior and nature of the certain subject under experimentation or
instrumentation. Understanding the changes that needs to be applied and to be adjusted is
critical, especially that this fluids as your subject, has its own unique characteristic that may
be harmful when exposed to animals, humans, or in the environment. That is why,
visualizing its behavior under certain boundaries is important to avoid hazard, danger, and
possible casualties on the process. A common task in the field of Mechanical Engineering is
in the instrumentation or in a plant, where pipes and fluid transportation and utilization is to
be achieved. A thorough and detailed visualization is needed to calibrate the efficiency and
effectiveness on the pipes, as well as the flow of the fluid (steam). Here in this Laboratory
Exercise, with the aid of Solidworks’ feature the Flow Simulation, certain fluids behavior will
be able to be observed and understand the nature of it under manipulation of the pipes
design and certain bounded situation.

Every visualization starts with a sketch, sketch the part/ pipe. The after indicating the
measurements of the sketch. Followed by using the Swept Boss/Base, to form the pipe
using a certain diameter, to follow the path of the sketch. After the construction of the 3d
model, the pipe was transformed into transparent so that the fluids’ behavior inside the pipe
will be visible. the manipulation for the simulation started by adding a lid, on both ends of the
pipe to create a boundary for the fluid to flow and to observe within the pipe. Using the Flow
simulation feature of Solid Works, it was detailed visualized on the behavior and nature of
the fluid inside the pipe and the pipe itself. With respect with pressure and velocity.

Conclusions
With the aid of Solid Works’ feature Flow Simulation, visualizing the nature and behavior of a
certain fluid within a bounded system such as pipes, where humans cannot simply observe
with a naked eye, is now possible. Not only the behavior can be observed, but also the
factors that affecting the relation of the fluid and the pipe inside and out, can be observed
such as its pressure and velocity.

With regards with the behavior and nature of the fluid on the Flow simulation bounded in the
pipes, it was concluded that:
• In Cut Plot: (Flow Trajectory)
o With such design/structure fluids Pressure is high near the source and
continuously decreases as it leaves the fluid source.
o With such design/structure fluids velocity (x) increases as it flows in the x
axis path, and reduces as it flows in the y axis path (increase or decrease
elevation).
• In Surface Plot:
o With such design/structure fluids Pressure is high near the source and low as
it leaves the fluid source.
o With such design/structure fluids velocity (x) is not affected/ no changes.

The design of a certain object, subject, element, or machine. Does not only affects the
subject’s physical appearance, but also has an important or critical role on its behavior and
purposes with respect to certain variables present within contact.
